August 5-7: Yankees at Cardinals

The Yankees are still scuffling. With a 10.5 game lead in the standings it is easy to say that this is just a small bump in the road and everything is fine. And maybe it is. But some sustained, quality baseball would really be nice.

Pitching matchups:

Cortes vs. Hudson
German vs. Montgomery
Montas vs. Wainwright

While I'm certainly interested in seeing Montas up close, the matchup that catches my eye the most is German vs. Monty. The guy I expected to get traded vs. a guy I expected to stay. It was a good trade deadline, but that is a little surprising.

So yeah, let's take two out of three on the road and get back on track.

I still think holding German is more about his upside than anything. Monty's upside is a number 3-4 diet Andy Pettitte. German's is diet ace.

and yea, we hate his past, but you either let the guy play or you don't. You don't wait 3 years to get rid of him with his past transgressions as part of the reason why you chose him over someone else. We all don't want to root for him, but we're a couple years into that now. Might as well let him pitch and see if healthy German is really that number 2.

Interesting take, crow. Evidently Montgomery has been available for a few years and his salary is going to jump this winter. I think the deal was more about opening up that spot while at the same time slotting in a guy who Cashman thinks is a peak Kiermaier/Bradley Jr. type for next season. NY can give German a few weeks in the #5 spot, then Schmidt a few weeks there, and then Severino should be back.

I am personally not optimistic about German, but it is true that he has barely pitched this season and is still presumably settling in, just 3 starts so far.

I think I agree that German likely has a higher ceiling than Montgomery who maybe has a better floor. I suspect that Schmidt is better than both of them and look forward to seeing him fully stretched out.

All that said, if Cole and Taillon make a habit of getting blown up, I'm not going to spend much time worrying about the #5 rotation spot.

NY comes into this series with a bit of an advantage, they had yesterday off and STL had a doubleheader in which they used six relievers.

We have family visiting so I've missed this one so far. The box score doesn't look terrible, but more runs would be nice.

Holmes in against the top of the order in the 8th probably means Chapman in the 9th if NY is still ahead, hold your breath.

6-9 since the ASB but still 10 up in the loss column, 55 to play.

It's starting to feel like they're gonna find a way to lose instead of the opposite, like it was most of the year. They gotta turn it around.

Only run so far was easily avoidable, even Smoltz knew to not throw Arenado another strike after 2-2 with first base open and two outs, but instead German threw six strikes in a row from there and finally Arenado ripped a bullet single.

Marinaccio in, maybe he can go two before tomorrow’s unbelievably unfair demotion.

Nice job.

Trivino and Loaisiga and Peralta all have options but Marinaccio is the rookie who has already gone up and down this year. If Cashman can keep Marinaccio up somehow that I don’t see, I will be impressed.

Another great AB from Carpenter, he just misses again, to the warning track.

Former Yankee Gio Gallegos warming for the save, NY dealt him in the Voit deal.

Andrew Heaney has been hurt most of the year but somehow has a 0.68 ERA in between for the Dodgers.

Joey Gallo’s teams are 50-18 in games he starts this year, Dodgers up 2-0 again tonight.

Just saying that he should be getting booed like Gallo was. Especially since Gallo is such a good guy and Donaldson is a racist asshole, but I digress.
Gallo has a 0.0 bWAR. Donaldson’s is 1.9, he has literally been one of the top few defensive players in MLB this year, at any position.
