Does he go 50-50? Yowzers

10 more steals shouldnt be a problem if he really makes it a priority.

There
Poche threw a bunch of crappy breaking balls in the dirt to walk Max Muncy and load the bases with two outs.
The whole Muncy AB I was yelling at my TV, "TAKE THE WALK!"

Just nuts. What a game that would have been to be at, seeing both the 40th steal and the 40th HR, which oh yeah just happened to be a freaking walkoff grand slam. I noticed a ton of people in the crowd who had their hands on their heads or over their mouths, just in complete astonishment.

I feel bad for the Dodgers fan in the first row of the bleachers with the glove who had the homer lined up even better than Siri did, only to be bumped by a Rays fan at the last second and miss the catch as the ball bounced back onto the field. That's a...million dollar miss?

Nobody has even gone 43/43 before, so that and anything past that is a record.

Only four teams have even had teammates where one had 50+ homers, and another had 50+ steals*. To think Ohtani might do that alone is just absolutely otherworldly. And he's not fully healthy and/or pitching yet. We're beyond fortunate to watch this greatness.

*The other teams if curious: 1995 Indians (Belle, Lofton), 2000 Cubs (Sosa, Young), 2017 Marlins (Stanton, Gordon), 2023 Braves (Olson, Acuna).

He is exactly on pace for a 50/50 season. Sitting at 40/40 after today, the dodgers have played 129/162 games, 79.6%, or exactly 4/5 of the season. As long as he doesn't get injured and misses no more than 1-2 games, 50 HR is definitely feasible, especially with pitcher fatigue / injuries setting in and September callups. As you said, 50 SB can happen rather easily if he makes it a priority. He is at >90% success rate so he can easily make it happen if he sacrifices some success (MLB average SB success rate is high 70s).

Ohtani has definitely made stealing bases a priority recently, 24 of his 40 are in the past 42 games.

"Big Christmas" Jhonkensy Noel just became the 2nd fastest Cleveland player ever to reach 12 career home runs (41 games). Of course, you can understand why there are still some questions about his future considering #1 on that list is Russell Branyan. It's understandable because no one was actually calling for it, but if the Guardians had promoted him as soon as the switch flipped for him in AAA in May, he'd have a real shot at AL RoY.

I watched some of the game last night and saw him hit a bomb. He's a really fun guy to follow.

Jose Ramirez just attempted the stolen base cycle – stole second, stole third, but was thrown out by the shortstop trying to swipe home on a delayed double-steal with David Fry running to second.

I wonder if that's ever been done while also including a passed ball K/safe at first.

White Sox looking at loss 100. Had an early lead but the Tigers rallied.

Seth Lugo continues to get lit up when he faces teams other than the White Sox and Tigers. Even with his two gems against them in the past month, he has a 5.20 ERA since the All-Star break. Corbin Burnes has been even worse with a 6.49 ERA over his last six starts. Tarik Skubal seems positioned to run away with the AL Cy Young, although I think Emmanuel Clase should be the clear runner-up right now and maybe grab some 1st place votes from those who prefer the leverage of pitching in a pennant race.

The Guardians and Royals face off 7 times in the next 10 days. They were separated by 1 game 24 hours ago, but Cleveland will host the Royals tomorrow with a 3 game lead – beginning with a double-header. Kansas City will go to Houston for four games in between the two series, so they can make or break their season before their next off-day.

After that for KC is MIN and NYY, 17 straight games against 4 of the other 5 AL teams in playoff position currently (all but BAL). Quite a test!

Cleveland up 2-0 in game #1 of today's double-header against KC. The Royals are going with two starters todays (Ragans and Marsh). Cleveland recalled Logan Allen and Joey Cantillo, but Allen is starting tonight while Cantillo currently sits in the pen. This start is what Cleveland was hoping for – build a lead and then hope Cantillo holds it for a few innings. Even when Allen is pitching well, he's not known for his efficiency, so they're definitely taking a risk today… they could regret not bringing Allen up over the weekend and pushing Boyd's start back to today.

The first run for the Guardians was a bases loaded walk to Kwan on a bad call, but it was a 3-0 count and Ragans is struggling to throw strikes, so he still would have needed to get a couple more over the plate. He gifted them the second run on a wild pitch.

Hopefully, Cleveland can still sneak in as the 3rd wild card.

Now 0-8 in double-headers this year.

The Royals – who have been the luckiest sons of @%!#'s in baseball from the trade deadline – just watched Michael Lorenzen exit the game after he tweaked something in his leg covering first base.

Anthony Gose has spent years in the minors turning his career around so that he can pitch like a position player taking one for the team.

DFA'd today
The 3rd time Cleveland has DFA'd him this month. Unfortunately, he'll just resign a minor league contract and be back when they're short-handed again.

The last time the Royals had a share of 1st place this late in the season was 2015.
They own the tie-breaker, so Cleveland really doesn't even share first place with them. If they finish the season with identical records, the Royals are Central champs. This is the first time Cleveland and Kansas City have ever battled for first place – the 2-3 years out of the last 30 when KC was actually good, Cleveland was rebuilding.

Julio Rodriguez just hit his 12th home run of the season for the Mariners.

I knew he was having a bad year, but I didn't realize he had the same amount of ding dongs as perennially under-achieving Gleyber Torres.

That's wild.

And a lower OPS in a roughly similar number of ABs, .683 to .660. That SEA park really kills offense.

The pattern in Julio's career is that he's usually Kinda Bad in April and May, then serviceable in June, then amazing in July and August. That was starting to happen this year, too, but then he injured himself in July and (based on performance it seems reasonable to conclude that) he came back too soon and is still affected by the injury in August. But yes, someone also does need to do some kind of exhaustive study on how to improve offense at whatever they call Safeco Field these days.

Blowing a 10-3 lead and losing by 4 runs with 9 outs to go is impressive.
Sending out the bat signal @Brand Name. How many times have teams come back from 7 runs (or more) in the 7th inning or later? What's the all time record for teams trailing by 7 (or more) after 6 full? Thanks in advance!

Not a complete answer, but here are the 100 biggest comebacks by Win Expectancy. Of these 100, 38 had leads of 7+. Of those 38, 36 still had a 7+ run lead at the beginning of the 7th.

That Cleveland comeback against Seattle in 2001 was the Sunday night game on ESPN, which is the only reason I saw it since I was on vacation. Everyone else had gone to bed by the time the Indians were trailing by 9+ runs, but for some reason I stuck with it. When I told the others on the beach the next morning that Cleveland won, they thought I was making a joke to give them a hard time for going to bed early.

Update: Hey, I got a method since 1912 now. Sweet. That's now 62-14,851, regular season.

Yes, this includes yesterday. I could include today in this data set but I don't like to because it's volatile and could change between research and posting.

Royals have had good health this season but the injury bug has taken a big bite the last 48 hours. You could see Pasquantino’s wrist swelling up right after.

Emmanuel Clase allowed a home run for the second time this season, but then retired the next three batters for his 40th save of the season – also becoming Cleveland's all-time career saves leader with 150. He's 26 years old.

Kersh pulled in the 2nd after giving up a blast to Corbin Carroll. Roberts and our head athletic trainer were on the field before Carroll rounded 3rd.
