Every day is Big Christmas time! Jhonkensy Noel with 3 home runs over the last two nights – two of them to put Cleveland ahead.

At least Lane Thomas can play center field, because acquiring him to take at-bats away from Noel was a mistake.

Seth Lugo should be out of the running now. I'd have Clase in the top three with Skubal and Burnes.

Skubal is the overwhelming betting favorite at -750.

Others:
  1. Burnes +480
  2. Gilbert +4,000
  3. Lugo +4,000
  4. Ragans/Kirby each +8,000
  5. Castillo/Valdez/Clase each +10,000
This is basically asserting that Skubal has about an 80% chance of winning, Burnes 15%, and 5% for the field.

Edit: To follow up - https://stathead.com/tiny/FQ1X8:
87164
fWAR is a bit closer, with:
  1. Skubal 4.4
  2. Ragans 3.9
  3. Kirby 3.6
  4. Houck 3.4
  5. Lugo 3.3
  6. Burnes 3.2
  7. Gilbert 3.2
Clase is only at 1.8 fWAR.

Skubal just blows these guys out of the water on Ks, is in the same ballpark as innings, meaningfully lower on BB's than Burnes/Lugo, and way ahead of the other starters on ERA+.

I'll stick with what I said. Lugo or Gilbert are clearly not having the season Skubal is so unless they seriously outpitch him and Burnes the rest of the way there's zero reason to give either of them more than a 3rd place vote. Right or wrong, Burnes probably gets a boost for being brought in to be the ace for the best team. Those guys are competing directly against each other while Clase has a very different narrative as the best closer in the league. bWAR is also much more favorable to Clase.

Seth Lugo isn't even a good pitcher unless he's facing the White Sox (3-0, 1.79) or Tigers (2-0, 0.60).

vs. >.500 teams: 4-5, 4.67 ERA, .792 OPSa
vs. <.500 teams: 9-2, 1.79 ERA, .494 OPSa

Xavier Edwards has 19 steals in 40 games, which is crazy. And 15 in his last 20, which is crazier.

Burnes pitches for Cleveland now? :D
The Guards are the best team in the majors if you go by obscure stats like winning percentage.
Congrats!

Ten games ago, the Pirates were 56-54 and on the fringe of WC contention. Two series against the Padres, sandwiched around one against the Dodgers, Pittsburgh is now 56-64 and headed for another last-place finish

Mariners lose another, 7-2 to PIT, down to 63-61 now.

It must be so frustrating to root for them, their rotation is the envy of baseball, they keep trying to bring in offensive help, but here are the OPSs of the nine guys they started today:

.685
.717
.690
.671
.703
.684
.637
.614
.525

I have to think a Woo/Miller trade with the Red Sox makes too much sense not to happen this offseason.

I’ll say it again: what’s a guy got to do to get fired around there? Jerry D makes so many moves and so few of them work out.

Kershaw pitched 6 shutout innings... that's three decent enough outings in a row. Ohtani hit a homer. Just like they drew it up, huh?

Ha - well, I think their elimination number is non-zero even though they're technically eliminated. So I have another day or so.
White Sox lost again today so they are eliminated for real now.

Unthinkable a year ago, tonight the Brewers intentionally walked Lars Nootbaar to load the bases for Paul Goldschmidt with one out in a 1-run game in the bottom of the 9th.

Devin Williams struck out Goldschmidt (and then Gorman) to preserve the win.

The Cardinals have a really weirdly constructed roster. It's a bunch of old guys and a bunch of young guys with almost no one in the prime age range. They haven't had a single position player on the roster all season in the 28-31 age range. The pitching staff isn't quite that extreme but it's similar.

WBC 2026 pools are out:

https://x.com/WBCBaseball/status/1826258879002648759

Pool A San Juan
Puerto Rico
Cuba
Canada
Panama
Qualifier

Pool B Houston
United States
Mexico
Italy
Great Britain
Qualifier

Pool C Tokyo
Japan
Australia
Korea
Czechia
Qualifier

Pool D Miami
Venezuela
Dominican Republic
Netherlands
Israel
Qualifier

Pool A+B Quarterfinals in Houston
Pool C+D Quarterfinals in Miami
Semis and Championship in Miami

How those last four qualifiers are going to be determined has not yet been announced. I've heard that Curacao is going to try to qualify independently -- if that's true, I wonder what happens if they fail. Could those players still play for the Netherlands?

Same game, still 3-2 Mets, leadoff runner on in the 8th. 3-2 count on the second batter of the inning, runner goes on the pitch, obvious strike is called ball 4, which negates the runner being thrown out at second (which he was). So because of a brutal call, 1st and 2nd, no one out instead of no one on, two outs.

Sometimes I want to stop watching baseball completely until electronic zones happen.

Heh then the next batter (O'Hearn) gets kicked out of the game after going nuts about the strike zone calling.

Mets walk off the Orioles again, this time via Jesse Winker’s first HR for the Mets.

Anyone seen the new player tracker in the upper left corner of Gameday on mlb.com? Maybe it's not new, but I've never noticed it until today. It appears to be tracking the players in real time. Pretty interesting watching the SS sneak in behind the runner on 2nd and seeing how the outfield is shifted for different batters.

Here's a screenshot of a meeting at the mound:

87436

Edit: It's even showing the fielders playing catch with a ball going back and forth between the positions between innings.

I noticed for the first time a few weeks ago. It is really a cool new feature. Outside of the strike zone issues, MLB sure is putting out an awesome product for the fans, with things like this, and Savant and most of the new rules.

It's too bad the ball/strike issue is such a fucking thing.

Hit the little 3D button in the corner, it's nuts. Every limb of every player is tracked along with the ball, so you can see Raffy's exact stance in the box and a perfect recreation of every play. I've watched large parts of games like that.

I really hope another team make an insane offer to Soto because he and Judge are ridiculous right now.

Almost as ridiculous as pitchers throwing them strikes.

Especially in that joke of a park. Matthew Boyd would have had a 1-2-3 first inning last night in maybe any other park in baseball, instead he gave up back-to-back home runs to them.

ELDC is at 20 homers and 60 steals. Given his recent production, he is going to get 30/70 barring injury. Oh yeah, and he also makes throws from short that make Aroldis Chapman circa 2011 take note.

The Phils got their 2nd pinch hit RBI yesterday. The Sox lead baseball with 30.
Manuel Margot has a Gallaraga this year. He’s 0 for 28 as a PH for the Twins.
