It’s kinda tough to be anything but disappointed in the players coming back there.

They aren’t without intrigued but it’s two guys who would most likely be available in the rule 5 next year.
But then you have to keep them on the roster all season, very different.

Is there any reason not to call up Valdez now and get him some playing time at 2b the rest of the year? He’s certainly put up some monster #s in the minors this year. (I guess the reason would be putting him on the 40 man…)

Presumably because a deal is not done until it's done. You can't tell a guy not to take BP and then say "never mind." Presumably this got out because someone other than the Red Sox leaked it before they could tell Vaz.
ESPN says he did know, that Cora had told him, but ??
I don't get how anyone who's been following this team the past 72 hours can be shocked we traded Vazquez
Most of us were prepared to see him go to the Mets, but not the team the Sox are playing tonight.

Massive R/L splits? I dunno. I was thinking the same when someone said don't bother learning their names. That involves the Sox actually going all in on the selling thing though. Who knows what they are doing.

I liked Vaz, but they traded 2 months of a league average catcher, not surprised the return isn't huge

ESPN just showed Vaz heading out to warm up with Eovaldi

Have you guys never seen players pulled DURING games because a trade came together quickly? Shit happens.
People are presumably frustrated because they aren’t good, so this is an opportunity to jump on management. I get it, but the impulse is generating some off takes.

FWIW, Valdez's .296/.347/.560 line in 173 PA at AAA is on a .307 BAbip.
His .357/.463/.649 line in 205 PA at AA was .438.

Still a really good AAA line, but it's also the PCL.

I remember in 1995 Rick Auguliera went from sitting in the Twins bullpen DURING the game, getting traded to the Sox and then getting the save for the Sox against the Twins. Plus it is being reported by Marley Rivera of ESPN that Vazquez had been told by Cora before BP that he had been traded. However certain people refuse to acknowledge that fact.

And since baseball is so funny the Sox probably win 12 of their next 15.

The guy played hard, appeared to be a good teammate, and never shied away from a big moment. I look forward to him taking Cole deep in the playoffs.
I have a soft spot for guys who come up during an absolutely shitty time for the team, and ride the long wave to the top. Vaya con dios.

Teams deal with trades all the time. How often do you see a guy on the field and get pulled in the middle of BP? You think a deal came together that quickly? If there was a chance of it being done tonight you don’t send the player out on the field. This could have been handled so much better than this by the front office. And don’t you think the player deserves better? Give Vasquez more respect than that!
And how about respecting the fans better than this? This is Tampa Bay baseball. Our front office should be better than that.
Our front office has won four titles in twenty years. What front office has done better?

Not quite. A player can't be on one team's roster to start the game, then play for the other team in the same game. He was traded mid-game, but it wasn't until the next night that he recorded a save against the Twins.

There's always Joel Youngblood traded to the other team between games of a doubleheader.

The Rays are still in the WC despite similar injury luck and nowhere near the spending.
Maybe that's a better model than the Sox have followed. More cheaper players, store a bunch of them at the lower levels to come up when injuries occur. The Sox fanbase wouldn't like that.
