He wanted Herrera, David, Holland to close the game, so he tried to steal some outs in the 6th. Duffy is clearly the correct move in hindsight, and I think Ventura should have had a clean inning at the very least, but it's easy to read why he sent Ventura out there.

Because he wanted a kid who threw 70 pitches two days ago to do something he'd never done?

He was awful against the Red Sox this year, giving up innings by inappropriate bunting in early innings, for example. Since then I read some stuff that indicated that is typical of his approach.
Ah, don't think I saw any of the KC games, but some of the gamethread comments are coming back. Thanks.

Yost also brought in Downs this year without realizing we would PH Gomes, Gomes proceeds with 3 run dinger,

Those early inning bunts hurt my brain.

Was that the single worst managerial decision in the postseason since Gump v. Pedro 2003?

Yost needs the "Luck of the Brenly" if the Royals are to escape elimination.

Lester switching into playoff mode, even though it's just a play-in game.  Really nice to watch Lester pitch in the fall.

It's reasonable to explain why he didn't go to the big three.
It's pretty hard to explain why he went to Ventura.

I said it was easy to read his intentions, not that it was a smart decision.

Agreed. Though I suppose that does go to hop's "he has things to explain".

I hear you guys but... Gump cost that team a World Series. Ned Yost just cost them a trip to the actual playoffs.
And Pedro's meltdown was gradual. Ventura imploded on his first pitch. Little had multiple opportunities to pull Pedro with the lead intact but he sat there like his ass was glued to the dugout.

Really. This thread has mentioned Jeter, Tyree, and now Gump. Now someone will figure out how to work in too many men on the ice.

We may sign him, but I've never thought much of Big Lame James.  I hate his face.  I hate the way he rocks when he pitches.  I hate that he has a reputation as a big game pitcher but hasn't won any big games.

That said, I don't care that he surrendered a homer to Moss earlier in the game, if he's your ace, you leave him in there or pull him for one of your relief aces.

Royals sure shooting themselves this game. Was Butler's baserunning gaffe ever explained?

Turns out it was intentional to get picked off, but Butler was supposed to make sure Lester delivered the pitch home first.

Umpire wants to be the show.  Gives Lester the high strike now, not having done so once before this game.  [mainly because he was sticking his tongue in Sheilds' ear with the too- low strike in the first 5 innings...]

Yost kind of did. Was supposed to get caught in a rundown but left way early.

Apparently, according to Christina Karl, the Angels had pulled off a similar play successfully against Lester earlier this month
