Displaced
Very sad news out of Edmonton about former Bruin Colby Cave.

#Oilers & @Condors forward Colby Cave has been placed in a medically-induced coma & admitted to the critical care unit at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto after suffering a brain bleed overnight. Please keep Colby & his wife Emily in your thoughts & prayers at this time.

A “brain bleed”? Is that Canadian for a hemorrhage or stroke? That doesn’t good at all. Terrible.

Unfortunately I just read a post on Facebook that he has passed on. It was a post from Hockey Night in Canada so I assume its credible. I don't know how to embed Facebook posts. My prayers to his family.

Horrible. The family couldn't even be with him because of CV19. Can we get a reboot on 2020?

League is talking about holding the draft remotely in June before any potent-start of the season.

Lots of logistics to work out, namely how to handle the conditions in traded picks. They’d probably also have to ban player trading at the draft if their intention is to resume the current season.

That seems somewhat... asinine. honestly If the NHL is going to be delayed, most developmental leagues will be as well - why not push back the draft to the period in between the proposed conclusion of 2019-20 and start of 2020-21? I don't think it's unreasonable to do so and keep the idea of a real 'draft day' alive

Sounds like “neutral” sites would be NHL cities, not the college rinks plan they looked at earlier. Arizona has reportedly expressed interest in hosting. My question would be if they would then send Arizona to play in another location? Doesn’t seem fair for the teams of the host cities to play in their city for the playoffs.

If we take a July restart to be July 1, they’d probably need to be up and in training camps by mid-June. They’re still saying they want some kind of finish to the regular season, so we’ll say 4 games each? Say they do that over 10 days, playoffs then start 7/15. Can they get a full playoffs in by 9/15? Then off-season, camps in November and maybe opening weekend around Thanksgiving? Can they play a full 82 next year starting in late November, with the Stanley Cup awarded right around traditional mid-June?

Thankfully they have plenty of lockout experience in working with shortened, crammed time frames.

Boston is too much of a hot spot. I think i they’ll end up in smaller markets that aren’t getting hit as hard by the virus. I know some people have tossed out Winnipeg as a possible site.

Whatever sources that John Wallach on 98.5 was speaking with was saying the tentative plan is one site per division. Looking at Edmonton, Minnesota, and Carolina with the Atlantic site up in the air.

With the caveat that I haven’t looked at the data for each city, I’d vote Detroit or Buffalo for the Atlantic. Neither should be in the playoffs. I guess no fans mitigates some of the home-ice advantages, but if they go to, say, Tampa, then the Bolts get the comfort of their own facilities and homes.

I was thinking Buffalo as well. They want NHL rinks with multiple sheets preferably in the same complex. Doesn’t Buffalo have that now?

Detroit is a coronavirus hotspot.

Does Ottawa have multiple sheets? That may be an option since they’re kind of away from everything up there in Kanata.

Does Canada want a bunch of people who have been living in the US to cross the border?
I think they would make an exception for hockey. Plus Edmonton is one of the other sites. Keep in mind that NHL coverage helps to fund public broadcasting in Canada. It’s a big revenue driver.

They’d be up Schitts Creek. :drums:

Sounds like the early June virtual draft will be a go. It was presented at the BoG meeting today and it doesn’t seem like there was enough push back for the league to back down. According to McKenzie, lottery would be similar to 2012 model. Odds stay the same, but max a team could jump is 4 spots. Works out well for Detroit who would get 58% chance at #1 (19% chance they win, 39% team outside the top 5 wins). As for conditional draft picks, teams would have to re-work them with an assist from the league if need be. The big one is New Jersey holding Vancouver’s first (via Tampa). New Jersey gets the pick if Vancouver makes the playoffs. If Vancouver misses, the pick becomes a 2021 unconditional first. Vancouver is out by points but in on points percentage. Sounds like the league is going to use points percentage to determine the order, but that’s a condition that will need to be settled.

Also, bids/proposals were due to the league today for teams who want to be a host city for the remainder of the season/playoffs if the league decides to use the 4 city plan to re-start,
