Would this be an appropriate place to vent about the fact that there is an off-day today. Every year MLB does this, and every year I get inexplicably upset when I remember there's no game the day after "opening day".

Ryan Madson made his first major league appearance since 2011, a scoreless inning for the Royals. As if their bullpen needed any more firepower.

Yeah, watching this Rays game, Karns looks a lot like he did in that game against the Sox late in ST: pretty terrible. He is either wild, or grooving pitches. And their offense has very little talent left...

Just looking through scores yesterday.
5 shutouts on Opening Day? In 14 games.

That must be come sort of record, right?
Possibly even a record for a normal day of baseball?

Someone smarter than me (everyone!) can probably figure out an easy way to check it.

A quick search lead me to this. It looks like the record is 8 (as of 2009) for a normal day of baseball.

@Haudricourt: Jean Segura is down after being hit in the head by a pitch from Jordan Lyls. Is not moving.

1) AJ Pollock sitting in Arizona. Anyone have any idea why?

2) Wonder if this will become a trend: Giancarlo Stanton has 3 BBs in his first 3 ABs tonight against the Braves, and at least the 3rd one was on 4 pitches (with none of them particularly close). Would be a shame for the sport generally if this kid doesn't see pitches, but with Morse behind him I can sort of understand why.

3) Healthy CarGo and Tulo can still crush baseballs and make the Rockies look incredible. When both of them are hurt in July, though, this Rockies lineup will look considerably less imposing.

Edit: Damn on Segura. I just tuned into Rockies/Brewers and Segura is on 1st with Gennett at bat, so luckily I don't think it's serious.

Kept playing by the looks of it so hopefully nothing serious.

Am I totally off base in suggesting that there should be your rule that anyone that gets hit in the head with a pitch should be replaced?

What could possibly go wrong?

Should we walk Stanton semi-intentionally 4 times today, or should we just ping him in the head first at bat so he has to be replaced by Ichiro Suzuki?

I have to believe that pitchers aren't going to be willing to plink people in the head. And I think I'd be willing to live with a rule that gives the imp the discretion to toss the pitcher at the slightest hint that someone was hitting folks in the head intentionally.

Look what's happening in the NFL in re concussions. The biggest concussion risk in baseball is getting hit in the head with a pitch.

Small nit. Those are PA's, not AB's.

I think Giants are going to be terrible this year

For a second I was like "Damn, that's an immaculate inning plus"

Then I realized Lawrie is a hitter.

Joaquin Benoit is still giving up tying home runs in the bottom of the eighth. This time to Adrian Gonzalez. Not a grand slam though (nobody on).

Yep, single, double and HR in each game, but Dodgers bullpen craps all over the place right away. Jimmy Rollins had a bad night in the field. Why did they give up on Dee Gordon and go get Rollins?

No day off in Seattle.

I'm guessing any park with a roof doesn't need to schedule a day off in case of an Opening Day rainout.

I couldn't find anything like it last night, so I made:
http://www.brooksbaseball.net/hilev/

It checks the scoreboard and then automatically redirects you to the highest leverage game that's going on (if there's no game, it sends you to mlb.tv).

This is all kinds of awesome.  How do I bookmark that?

I just right clicked on it in firefox and click the "bookmark this link" option.

Only issue is that it opens a new tab and scales the same size as the brower window you click it in, rather than its own window.
I'm sure there is some way to fix that.
