I think its less the legacy ports and more the apple chipWow and yup!
On the one hand it's pretty lame that they have to market the fact that they brought back basic features that people liked and took away things that people hated, but then again at least they did it. A touch of humility.
first Geekbench scoresThe chip features a single-core score of 1749 and a multi-core score of 11542, which offers double the multi-core performance of the M1 chip that's in the 13-inch MacBook Pro machine.
Based on these numbers, the M1 Max outperforms all Mac chips with the exception of the Mac Pro and iMac models equipped with Intel's high-end 16 to 24-core Xeon chips. The 11542 multi-core score is on par with the late 2019 Mac Pro that is equipped with a 12-core Intel Xeon W-3235.
The machine with the chip in question is running macOS 12.4, which we have seen in our analytics, but it's worth noting that we can't confirm with 100 percent certainty that this is an authentic M1 Max chip. Geekbench's John Poole said that the processor frequency looked weirdly low, but that the performance scores appear to be in line with what we'd expect to see from a 10-core M1 chip.
The new M1 Air released a few months ago would work fine for you.I have an old 2015 Air, which is getting slow and the battery is really going. I was planning on getting a new Air when they came out. I don't do anything heavy duty on it. Are they putting out a new Air, or should I just go with a 14 inch Macbook Pro?
I've been busy today so haven't looked but don't the USB-C ports support USB 2, 3, 3.1 and 4? I know my 16" MBP supports USB-3.1 I haven't checked the ARM based ones though.Would it have killed them to put at least 1 USB-3 port?
You can buy adapters to plug into the USB C ports. But, of course, that is something else to have to carry around and it costs more money.Would it have killed them to put at least 1 USB-3 port?
I didn’t realize USB-3 interfaces even existed anymore that weren’t USBC. I really don’t fault apple for including obe at this point. You can buy adapters to plug into the USB C ports. But, of course, that is something else to have to carry around and it costs more money.
Yes, the tech is backward compatible, but the physical connectors are different. Apple was attempting to make the ports more usable with this new release by bringing back the SD slot and HDMI port so people don't have to worry about dongles, but not putting at least 1 USB 3 slot seems like a huge miss.I've been busy today so haven't looked but don't the USB-C ports support USB 2, 3, 3.1 and 4? I think the issue is that the case is physically too narrow for a USB-A portYes, the tech is backward compatible, but the physical connectors are different. Nah, if the case can accommodate HDMI, it can accommodate USB-A.I think the issue is that the case is physically too narrow for a USB-A port
Cant you just buy a USB-C to USB-3 cable? That’s what I do for my lightening devices I use a USB-C to Lightening cable.Yes, the tech is backward compatible, but the physical connectors are different. yea, I’ve got a few those lying around and not a big deal at all.Cant you just buy a USB-C to USB-3 cable? That’s what I do for my lightening devices I use a USB-C to Lightening cable.
they’re only really used for Zip drives which really should just come in usb c more commonlyyea, I’ve got a few those lying around and not a big deal at all.
Nice, I have an Iomega 250mb one I need to get some data off of. /sarcasmthey’re only really used for Zip drives which really should just come in usb c more commonly
Had a lot of trouble finding my floppy to usb c converter.Nice, I have an Iomega 250mb one I need to get some data off of. /sarcasm
I ran into a client who’s still running a token ring yesterday . Don’t think a new M1 Max is going to work there. It’s amazing how old Some of the tech on the manufacturing side / ICS side.Had a lot of trouble finding my floppy to usb c converter.
It isn't too big to carry around, in my opinion.I’m looking to get my daughter (college student in January) a new computer. What do people think of the 16” size? Is there a concern that it’s too big to easily carry around?
For a college student, who will likely have to carry it around all day, I think it is too big. It’s 4.7 pounds. I’d get an M1 MacBook Air instead (unless she‘s in a program with specific laptop requirements). I couldn't find any requirements for her school (Case Western Biomed Engineering) but I did ask her to research it. I also need to get a computer for my wife. Is there any concern about the screen size and font size for someone who is older? Not sure how easy it is to adjust the type size for a Mac. I had a Surface Pro 3 and have found that at times, it was hard to read the text. I know that at both of the colleges my kids attend, engineering students are required to have Windows laptops. I'd definitely check with the school before buying a Mac. As for screen/font size, I have no problems using a 13 inch MacBook Air in normal resolution, but I also wear glasses with a computer distance prescription when I'm using my laptop.I couldn't find any requirements for her school (Case Western Biomed Engineering) but I did ask her to research it. The return of MagSafe and improved webcam/microphone are easy predictions that came true.. but they are *my* easy predictionsMicrosoft Surface devices (including Surface Laptops and Surface Pros) have excellent magnetic connections on par with the old MagSafe, with the additional ability to charge with a USB-C charger if you happen to be around one. It wouldn't surprise me if future MacBooks will have the same flexibility.
The new M1 iMacs will make fantastic quarantine/hybrid/work from home computers for people who are on lots of video calls and don't travel too much. That said, a combination of an M1 MacBook Air, a large screen monitor, a good webcam, and a decent microphone is in the same price range, and gives far greater flexibility. And I expect late-2021 MacBooks to up their game on the webcam and microphone front.
The notch fits in the center of the Mac menubar, which is mostly wasted space. It's more than a design bone - it shrinks the bezels and allows for more real-world screen size in the same area. What exactly does the camera notch do? It's doesn't have faceID or a physical lens. Is it just a design bone to appease Tim Apple?
I don't get people's obsession against the notch on the iPhone or the new MacBooks. In an ideal world we'd all have a camera under the screen that just worked and we didn't have it, but give me a small bezel all day any day. Especially for something as stupid as the middle of the menu bar.The return of MagSafe and improved webcam/microphone are easy predictions that came true.. but they are *my* easy predictions

They’ve revolutionized microfiber. It’s their best cloth ever.View: https://twitter.com/markgurman/status/1450924517132488712
Ok.. this is funny.. people will buy anything apple branded
I'll wait for Apple to work out the bugs in iCloth 1.1.They’ve revolutionized microfiber. It’s their best cloth ever.
I think I'd concur here. It's a size (slightly smaller) similar to my old 2012 Macbook Pro Retina, but a little heftier (4.7/4.8 to 4.46), and my old unit feels pretty chunky to carry around. It's not as brutal as some of the old-timey bricks I've had to lug around for work, but if the specs of the Air are sufficient for the student's needs (and most of the time they are plenty) i that might be a more comfortable choice. For a college student, who will likely have to carry it around all day, I think it is too big. I have last year's 13in MBP with the (now base level) M1 chip. What kind of battery life are people getting with the M1 chip. Is it close to what Apple says in their specs?
Glad to hear this. Now I just need to get to the NH apple store and buy one.I have last year's 13in MBP with the (now base level) M1 chip.
Yes. It's absolutely incredible. Light years beyond any laptop I've ever used previously.
