Interested to hear about the 5c and a possible deal with China Mobile. Market share!

So the 5c is an iPhone 5 in a plastic case with a slightly larger battery. Seems like a decent entrylevel option. Though I don't really like the black face with the colored backs, seems like the white face wouldve looked better, no?

At that point I may have to buy 5 of them so that I can get a mobile experience that will last the entire day without charging.

Instead of more speed than 75% of people need, it will have more speed than 95% of people need.

Speed increase but more importantly, IMHO, is that it would indicate more RAM in imminent next gen releases

That was a quick drive by the whole battery life conversation wasn't it.

If the 5S really gets 10 hours of LTE that's pretty amazing since I'm happy if I get four to five hours of LTE with my 5.

I wonder if it will support storing multiple fingerprints or if you'll always need to use the same hand to unlock the phone. I know personally I'm constantly just using whichever hand is free to hold the phone or hit the home button with my thumb.

edit; okay, the Verge feed now says "it can handle multiple fingerprints too"

I unlock my phone with a different finger all time time, wonder if you can program more (right thumb, right index, right middle, left thumb, etc)

Edit: Verge says it can.

It would seem to be necessary as, if you hurt a finger, or hand, you don't want to lose access to your phone or need to reprogram it.

What I most want after "watching" this event is an iPad with that a7 processor in it.

Can't imagine that's more than a month or two off.

My cousin is going to be very disappointed that they didn't come out with a see-through phone, which I had to explain to him isn't actually possible unless you make every component inside see-through.

If he wants to be able to text and walk at the same time...there's a (camera) app for that.

I was hoping for something about Apple TV, iWatch, something big after a "one more thing".  I don't think I'd want an iWatch, but I'd at least like to see something concrete about it.

That's in line with what people were saying before the event. It was just going to be iPhone/iOS 7.

yeah, anyone who was paying attention was expecting only an iPhone event.  Having it at Apple's campus was also another giveaway.  They're (supposedly) going to have another event in October focusing on iPad and the macbook is expected to get haswell in this timeframe as well.

Didn't Google scrap NFC in their latest Nexus phone? How wide-spread it its usage? I think part of the problem it's a "nice to have", but there's only so much space inside of the phones.

And no internet pre-orders for the 5S, only for the 5C?  That's kind of weird.

I think Apple was right to skip NFC. With the low power implementations of Bluetooth 4.0, it's pretty superfluous. I see things like Paypal's beacon gaining more traction than NFC.
Beacon is a Paypal proprietary platform requiring coding into the various POS systems I believe.  NFC is a universal, device agnostic platform.

That is odd. Maybe apple thinks the C is going to do the monster business?

Even crappier battery life basically. Pretty disappointing that with all these price points and slightly different specs, they won't get a better battery. Great that it will have an i7 chip, but thats going to hinder battery life a ton. I don't like having to carry around a charger to places.

Well the 5 came out, my wife and I went to lunch, walked by an apple store (at like 11:45) with no line, and walked in and bought one.  So, maybe it's the opposite- they expect the 5S to be bigger (at least to the crazy line-waiters) and  they are trying to create a reason to have people wait in line again.  I'm sure they sold enough 5's to have long lines, but too many were probably bought online, so that's why the Bethesda Row Apple Store had no line.

But, even if that was so, why have it for the 5C and not the 5S?  So, I'm probably wrong.

At this point, Apple probably has enough information for their logistics and operations teams to know the relative demand of a new iPhone flagship.  They likely can't (and won't try to) meet it, but they understand (or think they do) where to allocate iphones to maximize penetration given limited availability.

The 5c, as a new device, might give them pause.  Allowing people to pre-order gives them some pretty interesting data mashup capabilities to start to gauge demand for the device.  It's relatively minor, but I do think this is the type of stuff Apple is marginally better at than most other companies.  Especially given all the colorways, distributing this thing as efficiently as possible is actually a pretty nifty operations problem.

At this point you have to be a special kind of stupid to wait in line for a smartphone launch.
