The answer is clearly to cryogenically freeze him (and freeze his contract) until a procedure is perfected that not only repairs the injury but restores the joint to full health resembling that of an in-his-prime collegiate athlete and also cures any other physical ills, then unfreeze him and unleash him onto the field for Laser Show 2.0. If they can somehow time his return so that he goes up against a middling pitcher with the last name Francis, it could be truly monumental.

Could you cite a source on that because I don't believe a buy-out changes what is counted against the CBT one iota.

The Mets just did a buyout of David Wright last year. His full contract AAV is still counted against the Mets' payroll for luxury tax purposes through next season (when the original deal would have expired). Seems if the precedent is 20%, it would only be 20% of his AAV counting.
Wright has nothing to do with Pedroia since he had contract insurance, same with Prince Fielder, please look into Michael Cuddyer retiring due to injury and taking a 2.5 buy out of his 12.5 he was due.

Apples and oranges.

Cuddyer retired. That's what got the Mets off the hook, not the buyout. Pedroia is unlikely to retire just to save the Red Sox money. Not with $25M on the table.

Not that I disagree exactly but what is the difference between leaving $25M on the table vs. $12.5M? Other than another $12.5M ... is it really “apples and oranges”?

What are the cap considerations if they replaced Pedey's knee with Wright's knee, then making Wright an Ambassador for the Sox as well as the Mets? Do the Sox and Mets share the CBT stuff at that point?

Well, we don’t know if there was an additional incentive beyond the reported buyout to encourage retirement. (Note: I will flat out guarantee you that there was.)

But the key difference between Cuddyer and Pedroia’s situation is that the Mets are nowhere near the cap, so whatever they may have done beyond the buyout to encourage his retirement is irrelevant to MLB, because there are no “competitive imbalance” considerations.

If the Sox provided an incentive for Pedroia to retire, MLB would scrutinize every part of the deal because the Sox are already over the cap.

There’s also the fact that Pedroia isn’t walking away from the $25 million that he is entitled to.

This thread hurts my head.

NEW ANGLE:

If Pedroia became a player-coach would only half his salary count against the cap?
That's impossible. I think they should trade him to Oakland for a prospect, then Pedroia takes a buyout for 1/2 his salary and a gig as a team rep which he can do from home cause he's from there, and then John Henry gives the A's owner a part time job at one of his companies and pays him to make up for the other half of the salary.

Then they trade JBJ for a closer and call up Rusney.

Can't they just plant a dead hooker in his bed and void his contract through the standard morality clause?

After they get Pedroia’s extension done they can work on Mookie. He seems to want to test FA and see what’s he’s worth but if they offer him $500 million but spread it over 30 years they get to keep him as an assistant after he can’t play and his AAV would only be $16.67m which helps with the CBT problem. Who says no?
I know you’re being facetious, but isn’t that kind of what the Phillies did with Harper’s 13 year deal? They agreed to overpay when he’s 36-39 and keep the AAV down now.

13 years would take Mookie to 41, but $360/13 is better than $360/10.

That makes no sense. If they do that, they have to worry about both the salary cap and the knee cap.

In 10 years we`ll all be bitching about his contract and wishing he`d retire and save the club some money.
