Doyel's article summarizes his press conference pretty well. Still an ass about him being a "headcase".

https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/columnists/gregg-doyel/2019/08/24/why-did-andrew-luck-quit-colts-qb-shocks-his-coach-gm-owner-city-chris-ballard-jim-irsay/2110681001/
From another article on the Indy Star,, this is Jacoby's weekend to date:

Brissett only found out Luck was walking away on Friday. Luck himself broke the news to him.

Reich isn't quite sure how Brissett is handling it. He's only had a few minutes to spend with Brissett since he found out. And the former NFL backup-turned coach passed along the only advice he could think of on an emotional day.

“This is hard on Jacoby," Reich said, "because those guys were close, so my only comment to Jacoby was, 'Let's take a couple days to digest this. We’ll talk about it again after the game.' Because Jacoby was pretty emotional about this as well. This was very hard for him. They were very close."

This is tremendous
I knew there were gonna be a bunch of “he’s so soft!!!” takes but it’s just so stupid. I feel bad for Luck. Fuck the colts forever but I feel bad for him and I thought that tweet was fantastic

I have no love for Jim Irsay, but it seems to me that yesterday he did what he was supposed to do — express his appreciation for Andrew Luck, and make clear that he’ll be welcomed back with open arms if he changes his mind, however unlikely that may be.

I’m surprised there isn’t more discussion here about the implications of Luck’s retirement for the Pats. KC is obviously NE’s chief rival for AFC supremacy, but if I had to pick an AFC team besides those two to reach the Super Bowl, it would’ve been Indy. I think Luck’s retirement eliminates the Pats’ most formidable rival for a first-round bye. On the other hand, it improves the Jaguars’ chances of making it to the divisional round, and they’ve been a relatively tough matchup for the Pats the past couple years — I’d rather play the Colts (with Luck) than the Jags in Foxborough in January, even though the Colts were the better team overall.

He just sounds at peace with his decision and prepared to move on. Sounds like his body is broken. Said he heard the fans boo him and said it hurt.
Did the fans boo before or after the news about his retirement broke? I'm confused how this could have happened if it was after, unless the news broke during a game.

That booing-as-he-walks-off video - that’s gonna stock to Indy. That’s AWFUL. What a bad, bad look for a fan-base.
I'm not sure any fanbase in the NFL would have reacted differently.

Just like Toronto fans cheering the Durant injury a few months ago.

We can tsk tsk them, but the same thing would happen anywhere. It's a building full of drunk people watching football. It's nice to imagine you'll get thoughtful, nuanced reactions from that demographic, but...

For the last few years there has been a team sitting there as a potential playoff opponent that, despite 10+ wins, most of us felt had no chance of coming to Foxboro and winning a game.

It feels like a rite of winter that we hope against hope that the Colts get matched up with the Pats sometime in January.

Whatever other team the Pats play, I can usually talk myself into being nervous.

For that...thank you, Andrew Luck.

I hear you. But I think the Colts had turned a corner last year — Frank Reich is the best coach that franchise has had since Don Shula. (No, I didn’t forget Dungy.) It’s good for the Pats that this emergent rival has been defanged, even if the most immediate beneficiary is a team (Jacksonville) that isn’t a great matchup for the Pats.

Was there a lot of booing of Gronk I missed at the parade?

There’s plenty of things wrong with every fan base but I disagree that this means we can just assume specific fan reactions are all transferable. The reactions happen in the context of the relationship of the player and the franchise to the fans...and some are better than others for various reasons.

The situation is very different. These fans who booed (and it wasn’t all of them) just not blindsided by the news that their season may have been sunk in an instant. I’m not sure that the same would happen to Brady, but that would be a completely different situation as well due to their relative statures.

Didn't Gronk retire AFTER the parade?

Even if a QB APY is pushing $50m, was Luck really going to play another 10+ years?
Shows you Irsay's mentality, that Luck, or any player, is just a piece of machinery he buys and plugs into the team - to be fair, that's probably most owners - that likely rubbed Luck the wrong way too.

If you've already made $100M and your body is already in shambles, do you really want to continue to destroy yourself to make more? Good for him for saying no.

If Drew Bledsoe had retired ten days before the 1999 season started, and walked off the field at Foxboro that day...he would have been booed like a MFer.

Retiring in the off season, and after winning 3 championships...different.

Not condoning the Colts fans in any way because fuck them, their owner and their team, but Gronk retired in the off-season, after having won the Super Bowl, and while his team was in discussions with free agents. Luck retired during his team's third pre-season game.

I'd point out that toxic masculinity is the institutional bedrock of many a sport and their fanbases, and is a willful feature, not a bug.

Right. That's what I'm saying. How could Pats fans have booed him at a championship parade BEFORE he announced his retirement?

It's not so much that they booed - I think a lot of fan bases may have in that moment, maybe - but Colts fans have this holier-than-thou attitude (they got it from their head coach! ha), so fuck them.

There is a nasty little part of me that wants to go back in time and let all the Indy fans bleating about getting Luck that he’d play seven years, never beat the Pats, never go to a super bowl, and the pats would go to four and win three during those seven years.

Ok fine it’s not that little.

It's not so much that they booed him, though I do think thats insanely classless, it's that it'll be swept under the rug and forgotten within weeks.

If Boston or Philly fans did that, it would be brought up for another 40 years.

When Andrew Luck entered the league in the 2012, the Patriots were coming off a Super Bowl loss to the Giants. The Colts had just "sucked for Luck", gotten their man, and would embark on a terrific three-year run to start his career, going 11-5 each of his first three seasons, with Luck making the pro bowl each time. The Pats had a rough go of it in 2010 and 2011 in the playoffs, and entered the 2012 season with a lot of doubts, and Tom Brady was 35 years of age.

Who would have imagined that in the next 7 years, the Colts would never beat the Patriots, would never get to a Super Bowl, and Luck would retire, while the Patriots would go to 7 straight AFC Championship games, go to 4 Super Bowls, win 3 of them, and that Brady would enter the 2019 season at age 42 and looking as good as ever?

It's just incredible.

also, good for Andrew and fuck bill Polian on principle even though he has nothing to do with this story.

Everyone told me when Luck graduated that I would root for him in Indy. To which I replied that I have a ton of friends who went to school with me that went to Goldman Sachs, I don’t root for those motherfuckers to have professional success. It’s nice to be able to root for something other than Andrew Luck’s complete and total professional humiliation.
