Would Sargent play a ton for Norwich? One of the good things about Werder Bremen being bad was that Sargent got to play a lot. Norwich basically only plays one striker and he is a lot better than Sargent.

Source seems really dubious. It's just a guy--seems weird he'd have a source.

Pukki's a killer in the Championship, but didn't set the EPL on fire last time he was there. Still almost definitely better than Sargent, but not unbeatable if Josh wants to bet on himself. Farke definitely has a coherent attacking system, which is always something I want to see Sargent in at the club level, so I'd be intrigued.

Carlisle reports that Erik Palmer-Brown is close to a move from Man City Loan Army to Venezia. He'd be the third American acquired by the club this summer after Tessmann and Busio, whose deal will be officially announced after the Gold Cup. Only Busio has any sort of Euro passport, so it's quite interesting to see a Serie A club use not one, but two of their precious allotment of non-EU incoming transfers on Americans who are definitely not sure things at the Serie A level.

Venezia has an American owner, so they are getting out on a bit of a limb here.

Bryang Kayo '02, a central midfielder with U17 WC experience, has gone on loan from Wolfsburg to Viktoria Berlin in the 3. Liga. Wolfsburg is a bad place for young players, so the hope is that he'll show well and gain interest elsewhere for when he inevitably leaves the club.

Brace for Sargent despite still being out of position on the wing. That plane thing was Twitter guy nonsense but he’s putting himself in the shop window for sure

UEFA competitions update:

Champions League 3rd Qualifying Round, 1st leg

CFR Cluj 1-1 Young Boys (Jordan Pefok, started)
Ferencváros (Henry Wingo, started) 2-0 Slavia Prague
PSV Eindhoven (Richy Ledezma, injured) 3-0 Midtjylland
Genk (Mark McKenzie, unused sub) 1-2 Shakhtar Donetsk

The playoff round draw has been made. Red Bull Salzburg (Brenden Aaronson) will face Brøndby (Christian Cappis) for a place in the group stage. If they both advance, Young Boys (Pefok) would face Ferencváros (Wingo) for another slot.

And then in the group stage, we've got:

Christian Pulisic (Chelsea)
Zack Steffen (Man City)
Chris Richards (Bayern Munich, but maybe not for long)
Timothy Weah (Lille)
Sergino Dest (Barcelona)
Weston McKennie (Juventus)
Gio Reyna (Borussia Dortmund)
Tyler Adams (RB Leipzig)
Tyler Boyd (Beşiktaş, but probably not for long because I think he's on the outs there)
John Brooks (Wolfsburg)

Europa League 3rd Qualifying Round

Most of the first legs will be played today

Omonia (Mix Diskerud) vs. Flora Tallinn
Galatasaray (DeAndre Yedlin) vs. St. Johnstone

In the playoff round, Diskerud would face Royal Antwerp (Sam Vines) if the Cypriots advance. Yedlin would face Randers.

In the group stage:

Timothy Chandler (Eintracht Frankfurt)
probably Mark McKenzie (Genk) since they look likely to be eliminated in CL qualifiers
Konrad de la Fuente (Marseille)

Europa Conference League 3rd Qualifying Round

Most of the first legs will be played today.

Maccabi Haifa (Josh Cohen) vs. HB Tórshavn
Elfsborg (Christopher McVey) vs. Velež Mostar
Breiðablik vs. Aberdeen (Christian Ramirez)
Raków Częstochowa (Ben Lederman, injured) vs. Rubin Kazan
Laçi vs. Anderlecht (Kenny Saief, in limbo and not in the club's plans)
Vitesse vs. Dundalk (Taner Dogan)

Playoff Round entrants:
Cameron Carter-Vickers (Tottenham Hotspur, but probably not for long)
Bryan Reynolds (Roma)

The Captain Obvious take about Sargent is that he needs to find a club that offers (a) a lot of minutes, (b) at least decent service, and (c) at least a decent amount of time spent in the attacking third.

How many boxes does this move check?
Maybe one-and-a-half boxes?

The biggest issue is going to be with minutes because Teemu Pukki is the clear starter at CF and has tended to play a lot of games/minutes for Norwich when available. But Puuki is also 31 so maybe they're thinking of rotating a bit more or giving Sargent a chance to become the heir apparent at CF.

Norwich have been a very attacking side over the last few years but when they last made it up to the PL, they ended up going right back down partly because they were a little naive in leaving themselves too open. They've also lost their creative fulcrum Emi Buendia (replaced essentially with Sargent's former Werder teammate Milos Rasica) so its a little unclear what kind of side they'll be this year. But I don't see them just sitting back and defending as that hasn't been their game. I think they will try to play and that should lead to a decent amount of service if Sargent can get on the pitch enough.

Amazing to think how recently the US winger depth chart was Pulisic, Morris, then I dunno, Boyd or Arriola?

Joe Scally '02 is starting (pro debut) for Borussia Mönchengladbach in the DFP Pokal. He is playing LB, but is a natural RB. Chatter from club personnel and preseason in general strongly suggested that he'll be with the first team on a regular basis this season, hopefully getting a decent number of minutes as the squad rotates.

Probably better fitted for the USMNT thread, but our RB depth chart is absurdly talented. I tried to come up with a scenario where Brandon Bye or DeJuan Jones would receive a January call up, but there are just too many names ahead of him. The USMNT Mikel Arteta (zero cap wonder) is going to be someone at the LB or RB position, maybe Hollingshead?

Tangent: January camp is going to get weird(er), and might have to become a U23 camp at some point in the next few years. There will probably be a handful of over-23s in the USMNT pool who are in MLS for one reason or another, but so much of the expanded USMNT pool is going to be based on Europe.

Sam Rogers '99, a center back, moves on loan from OKC Energy of the USL to HamKam in the Norwegian second division. An odd sort of move, but one that I'm sure USL hopes ultimately nets a small fee. They are looking to establish any sort of market for their players. Rogers was with the Sounders organization, but never progressed past a USL contract with Tacoma Defiance there. There were rumors that he had options in Europe that never materialized last winter, and he ultimately wound up signing with OKC.

Hey, Henry Wingo was another Sounders defender reject who found surprising success in Norway, so who knows!

Ramy Bensebaini still isn't fit, so Joe Scally is slated to start at LB again in Gladbach's Bundesliga opener...against Bayern. Good luck, kid. It's nice that he's getting the nod ahead of two natural left backs, Andreas Poulsen (age 21, on loan to Austria Wien last year) and Luca Netz (age 18, arrived from Hertha for $4.5m this summer).

He had a bit of a time with the wily old jobber Kaiserslautern were putting out there and they explicitly targeted him, so I am expecting a very tough time against Bayern. Seems like their coaching staff really likes him and understands the curve to grade him on here which is good, but anything better than "being embarrassed multiple times" and I will be very impressed.

Seattle loaned a USL player to FC Edmonton of the Canadian Premier League. Azriel Gonzalez '01 is a winger who has been with Tacoma for a number of years now, but has not progressed to the MLS level. The Sounders loaned out a pair of young players to a lower division Austrian team earlier this summer. It feels like a bit of it is giving them experience in new environments, but mostly allowing them to explore opportunities for an eventual move away from the club.

https://fcedmonton.canpl.ca/article/fc-edmonton-acquires-gonzalez-for-2021-season

Chris Garcia '03 has been loaned from RSL to Ljungskile SK of the Swedish second division. He's a tough one to figure out - he had good reviews as a young player, but just hasn't played much for RSL or their USL team in the last couple of seasons. He was injured for part of it, but I'm not sure what's going on this season.

Just tuning in now, but I'm reading a lot of positive things about Scally's first half.
It was about as good as you could hope for. They went at him, particularly with Sane, and he totally held his own and even looked good getting forward. Went right past Sane twice.

Maybe they were grading a bit on a "18 year old Bundesliga debut against Bayern Munich" scale, which is entirely reasonable, but the commentators couldn't stop saying effusive things about Scally.

1-1 draw and Gladbach should be pissed they didn't finish a few chances to snag the W in the second half.

Not sure if it’s been brought up but lots of rumblings of Miazga going on loan to Alaves. I’d like that move.
