Killing time...

Frank Duffy was mentioned in the Ted Cox thread and, well, I went here. Curious to see if the Sox can fill an all eyeglass team. Here are the slots. Rules - must have worn glasses (monocles count!) while on the field while playing/managing for the Red Sox and let the best player reign at each position. I'll include a bench for the also-rans and players who didn't usually play with glasses earn an *. I'll keep adding players if it looks like we could fill an active roster of 25. Let me know if I should add a position, add more rules, go to hell, etc.

EDIT: Some course corrections and expanding the eligible to include players wearing pince-nez - that should open things up!

1st Base - Bob Watson

2nd Base - Eddie Kasko

SS - Frank Duffy

3rd Base - Carney Lansford

LF - Alex Cole

CF - Dom DiMaggio

RF - Josh Reddick*

C - Rich Gedman

DH - Luis Rivera

SP - Rick Wise, John Curtis, Dave Sisler, Oil Can Boyd*

Closer - Eric Gagne

Bench - Brock Holt*, Wade Boggs*, Bill Buckner?

Bullpen - Greg Harris, Joe Kelly, Bob Veale, Tom House, Arnold Earley, Tom Herrin

Manager - Tito

Coach - Lynn Jones

Crew Chief - Frank Umont

* - player wore glasses only briefly.

Wow - that's fast. Are there photos of Wise and Buckner w/ glasses? I don't remember either wearing them on the Sox.

PTSD.

I cannot for the life of me find a picture of him pitching for the Sox with glasses, but I know I attended a game where he wore them.

The card and your memory are good enough for me. What's the deal with the bust trophy? If that's real, that's harsh. Of all the loose cannons players to run down, I'd hate to the the Upper Deck photographer who next covered Sox players.

I think Jim Rice wore glasses in some spring training games, but I don't think he ever did in the regular season.

John Curtis was another SP who wore glasses. Greg Harris might bump one of the relievers listed.

Arnold Earley saved a handful of games for the Red Sox. He’s probably a better fit in the bullpen, but I nominate him for closer just to get Eric Fuckin’ Gagne off this team.

Hold on Rice for now. Curtis - needed a lefty. Harris is coming in for the 8th. Added a bullpen slot.

4 things: Tom Brady's brother? Earley is a GREAT name for a pitcher. Earliest adopter of aviators I've seen so far - clearly didn't play by the rules. And a lot of sharpshooters I've seen wear yellow tinted glasses (someone here probably knows exactly why), so badassery goes up a notch. But career WAR of -2.9 over Gagne's epic 3 year run? Even my hate knows some bounds.

Eddie Kasko played a handful of games at 2B for the Sox. Also managed the team.

Somebody else here has to remember Rick Wise pitching a near no-hitter against Milwaukee in 1975. Even though he had previously pitched a no-hitter, when he got to two outs in the ninth he suddenly became the most nervous person on the planet and started breathing so heavily his glasses started fogging up....and he walked some nobody named (I had to look it up) Billy Sharp.....which brought up.....George Scott and we all knew what was coming next.

Final score 6-3.

Frank Umont would have to be the crew chief. In 1956 he was the first umpire to wear glasses in a game.
