I suspect that the new format was chosen by the network, as the duration of the contest can be more accurately estimated in advance. Stupid networks.

Like balls are not even landing before he is hitting another one out. This is dumb.
Either they changed the rule or Mancini was cheating, pretty sure before you couldn't throw another pitch until the last one had landed, that's how Harper won, his dad was quick pitching

Also, note that with this format, there are more opportunities for commercial breaks during each player's turn at bat.

Thank you guys, I couldn't understand why this felt so much less exciting than I remember, and you nailed it. It used to be 10 outs rather than a time limit and that was so much better because moonshots can't be admired. It's just too rushed now.
That, and Raveich provides as much excitement as a sloth on Ambien

Fundamentally disagree with Ohtani getting the SP nod.

Being an all-star starter is something to earn. He has 100% earned that right as a DH. Let someone else with better than a 4-1, 3.49 ERA have the SP honor.

Probably in a distinct minority here but it is what it is.
I think it's just to make everything easier for the manager given his special two way status. He pitches his inning; he gets his at-bat or two, and then he can be removed from the game. Otherwise they'd have to worry about sending him out to the pen to warm up prior to taking the mound when he might have to bat in that half-inning. I'm sure that's also why he's leading off.

First time I've watched the derby in a long time. I'm indifferent to the format as watching guys launch HR after HR kinda lost its luster after a while. But I'm surprised the players agreed to this timed thing. As much as there was a concern before about their swings getting messed up from the contest, the go-go-go nature can't be good for them either.

I'm watching on MLB.tv, and for the past minute, all I've seen is a graphic saying "T-Mobile Home Run Derby". Is the action continuing?

I haven't watched with this "new" format.

I dig it. But maybe that's just because Berman isn't assaulting my eardrums.
