I was astonished to see the GE logo on the Celtics uniforms last night. I guess I didn't get the memo. Is this a thing now in the NBA? Will I ever get over it, like I've gotten over adds on the Green Monster? I found it offensive, but maybe I'm just cranky. What do you think of your new look GE Celtics?

I let out a sigh last night when I realized how much I had already grown accustomed to it just from seeing pictures in the offseason. Some teams have ads with a non-native color which will look worse than ours, but I'm sure we'll become oblivious to them all before too long. So it is.

I go back and forth on this, most of the Uni-verse (gah) hates it because it's seen as a corporate sell-out thing. And I agree with it. But at the same time, I don't think it's that big of logo so I don't find it that bad. I mean, when's the last time you looked at someone's shoulder when you're watching a hoop game?

And plus, it was inevitable. These teams see how much foreign leagues (hoop, hockey, soccer) pull in with having a sponsorship and they want a piece of that pie too.

Do I love it? No. Do I think it will detract or hinder a player from playing ball? No. I think that it will look weird for a week or two and then you'll just get used to it. Now, if it was 20 years ago; I'd be raging against this. But I just can't muster up enough fucks to give one here.

It doesn't bother me and it helps that the Celtics have one of the least intrusive logos so it looks fine. Also, Rovell tweeted that the jerseys for sale won't have them unless you get them at the team shop at the Garden. That's something I was worried about. It would bother me paying ~$100 and having the ad on it (besides obviously the big Nike check).

I was kinda hoping it would indirectly subsidize ticket face values. Nope.

Caveat is that I was watching on a computer screen, but I didn't even notice them. I had no idea until seeing this thread. Might irk me a bit when watching on a real TV screen, but I'm pretty sure I'll get over it. I think the game takes place at a fast enough clip that my eyes and brain will tune them out.

I noticed it watching on clips.. but it's super subtle compared to any other league in the world. Every European soccer team is sponsored (or at least most), European basketball teams have huge ads on jerseys.. this seems like the best possible scenario if the NBA is going that way... plus ge changed their background color to green for their patch? Or is that wrong?

That's what she said.
Yes, they are much more subtle than in any other sport. (Nascar or Soccer)

I actually am excited when I learn a new team's sponsor! Many of them make sense. Denver is sponsored by Western Union, perfect. The Lakers and Warriros on the other hand are sort of lame. Cleveland's looks like an actual logo and almost ads to the uniform...

Fitbit on Minnesota's looked ok. Sacramento fits well with Blue Diamond Almonds.

It was announced in January. I don't like it, but prefer it if it keeps the last 2 minutes of the game from having 10 minutes of commercials.
Why have one when they can have both?

Any graphics designer will tell you that eyeballs are drawn to high contrast. Eventually sponsors will use images that are as intrusive as possible so as to draw more attention. And the NBA will let them in order to maximize revenue.

I hate this, but it was inevitable.

One nice thing about the Cs' GE logo — relative to, say, the Warriors' red Rakuten circle, Nets' red infor square, or Bucks' Harley logo — is that it doesn't add a color. It's green on the white jersey and white on green, so the color doesn't jump out. On the other hand, it's one of the bigger and more ornate of the jersey logos, so it stands out in that regard (too much, to my eyes).

I'll second that the Cavs' Goodyear mark is probably the most elegant (i.e. least offensive), both because it's color-sensitive and because it's just a classic, well-designed logo (unlike, say, Wish or Squarespace). Also, it looked wicked cool on this guy...

It looked terrible on those black unis, though. But to be fair, those black unis looked terrible without the logo

When I see that old GE logo, I think of my parents’ refrigerator, and then GE’s cratering stock price, not that I ever owned any GE stock. Maybe it’ll keep them humble. Keep winning.
