“From a content standpoint, we ran down all the different things they have, including the World Cups, which I’ve loved to do. But I want to be very clear: The World Cup is not the reason I am going to Fox and I don’t think it should be. Is it a wonderful carrot? Absolutely. But if the reason you go somewhere is because of the World Cup, then I think you are setting yourself up for disappointment and maybe disaster.”

Can Lalas get through a single quote without asking himself a question that nobody cares what his answer is?  I'm pretty sure he can't.

Why would following the world cup set someone up for disappointment let alone disaster?
Lalas sure has made the most of a mediocre understanding of how to describe and analyze the game.

California. Duh.
I don't care who has the rights to what, I just want Rebecca Lowe in the studio and Ian Darke in the broadcast booth whenever there is a game I want to watch.

Mike, That's not where I want Rebecca Lowe, I want her between the sheets and I don't care who does the play by play

Say what you will, but Lalas is good for ratings. He even gets his own thread on baseball message boards. He knows how to market his brand.

Yes, he's annoying, but am I alone in thinking that he's far superior to Wynalda ?

You are not alone but that isn't much praise.  I think Twellman is better than both of them.

I feel like this is a limbo contest of how low one can possibly set the bar.
At least Wynalda says something interesting or almost controversial once in a while.  Twellman and Lalas have both been polished in the ESPN machine so that nothing they say gives you anything.  Twellman doesn't let the game breathe either... I feel like he's always talking.

Pretty much every English announcer > Wynalda > Twellman >>>>>>Ballack > Fernando Palomo & Alejandro Moreno (ugh could ESPN get two more ridiculous homers for Mexico who aren't even from there?) > Lalas for me.

I like Fernando Palomo and Alejandro Moreno. They remind me of the 70s Monday Night Football booth - they tease each other pretty mercilessly, and don't take the game too seriously. But we're mixing announcers and commentators, with Lalas definitely one of the latter. (Twellman is much better as a commentator than announcer)

I'm not sure what you've heard from Lalas but he is all about controversy. It's just clear that he has more knowledge and puts in more effort than Wynalda does.

I may be overly harsh on Lalas...but I don't think I ever learn anything from him.  I may be predisposed to not listening to him at this point though.  It's possible that I just don't like him because ESPN seemed to have annointed him as their main commentator and he would often dominate conversation in studio.  Of course when the studio is two guys that barely speak english, Bob Ley and Lalas I guess that's the best possible outcome.

I just want ESPN to hire some people that can talk about the game and teach me and the general audience something.

WIth Palomo and Moreno I just get tired of them telling me how good Mexico is even when they clearly weren't the last few years (although they played well in the WC)...overreacting to goals against mediocre opponents, etc.

Palomo and Moreno are unbearable and indefensible. The only worse thing to hear on a broadcast is "I'm joined by Ray Hudson." At least Lalas doesn't sully the actual game.

DLew nailed it for me.  Lalas is nothing more than addition by subtraction.  He adds absolutely nothing to a conversation and consistently feels the need to try to make others validate his bad opinions through argument.  It almost seems as if he is playing a role of "dialogue divider".  He is horrendous at what he does as an analyst and big time MLS homer/fanboy that cannot even begin to fathom that someone may have a better idea about the MLS that he hasn't already thought.  He is just terrible.
