If anyone thought the soap opera sale of the New York Mets couldn’t get any crazier after the Steve Cohen debacle, they were A-Rod levels of wrong.

According to multiple sources, the newest name to emerge as a potential suitor to buy the Mets is none other than Alex Rodriguez. Baseball and Wall Street insiders told The Post that the controversial former Yankees superstar is “kicking the tires” on the idea of getting into an upcoming auction for the team. This comes after Cohen, the billionaire hedge fund manager, walked away from a $2.6 billion deal for 80 percent of the team last week upon learning that the Wilpon family would not be surrendering control for the first five years of his ownership.
“[Rodriguez] genuinely loves the Mets,” said one source familiar with A-Rod. “He and J-Lo have talked about him buying a team ever since Jeter got the Marlins.”
A-rod possibly owning the Mets. What a world we live in

It would get him off Sunday Night baseball, so I’m all for it.

It seems like he would just be the face of the group and why would you want him as your face?

This made me smile, but go Alex! Anything to change the state of affairs for the Mets. And while he's talkative on TV, he does display baseball smarts.

Oh come on, he’s shockingly good and often very good in that role.

In fact, Arod’s entire post-playing career has been shocking in that it has been anything but the train wreck his playing career turned into.

I want to see this happen too, tho.

IMO he is quite bad at it, he still has this incredible need to please everyone and he has no idea who his audience is and how to communicate effectively with them. The only time I have heard him be good is one game in the Yankee booth when Cone was there also, the presence of another accomplished player next to him seemed to help quite a bit.

He'd be way more than just the face of the group.
ARod has a net worth twice of Jeter. His actual business experience is also way ahead of what Jeter when he led he Marlins purchase. Add in JLO's portfolio and he would be a very credible leader of any buying group. I say this begrudgingly, but Arod would likely immediately be one of the best owners in baseball. I doubt he'd have any problem putting together a group of well heeled investors to insure the team is well capitalized. The steroid stuff is way behind him as a matter of profile and he'll bring tons of publicity and celebrity cred to the Mets. I also think he would be a good baseball executive. Just like Arod was the far better shortstop than Jeter, he'll be a thousands times better owner. (low bar for being better than Jeter aside)

If I'm Manfred, I find a way to make this happen.

Will their new mascot be a Centaur Mr Met?
C’mon people. We cannot let a gold nugget like this go unappreciated. Fours hours and no love? This is why we need a like button or something around here.

Can’t imagine it’s for that large of a stake, right? Would he be able to raise over $1bil. let alone 2+?

I read the same thing. Heard his real estate portfolio brings in $25M a year and that was a few years ago.

Jeter's got a boat, not a boat load, and a lot of limited partners who use him as the front man.

Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez appear to be making another run at purchasing the New York Mets.

According to Thornton McEnery of The New York Post, A-Rod and J-Lo are working with senior bankers at JPMorgan Chase to buy the storied baseball franchise from the Wilpon family. McEnery notes the celebrity couple is willing to part with "hundreds of millions" of their own money to make it happen. They also may get some assistance from the Kraft family.

"Two clients whom Rodriguez and Lopez have apparently been speaking to are Patriots owners Bob and Jonathan Kraft," McEnery writes. "Sources tell The Post that the Krafts are not interested in buying a baseball team but are very intrigued by J-Rod’s plans for the Mets and Citi Field."
Those plans include redeveloping the area around Citi Field and turning it into an entertainment venue similar to what the Krafts have done with Patriot Place outside Gillette Stadium.

I like the idea. Wonder if they copy the idea completely. Places like Capriotti's and Scorpion Bar would do really well there, and it would be more of a year-round thing I think.
