Weak answers as they evade answering the question about what was discussed with Cora during the interview.

It's the Mets so who knows but I don't really see how they can go forward with Beltran now. Sure, Cora was facing a long suspension and Beltran isn't, but what the Sox are saying about how it would be hard to go forward with Cora given his role in the Houston incident otherwise equally applies to the Mets/Beltran, no?

Just one note since several people has commented on this. Loney's tweet says: "Alex Cora treated me wonderful when I was with the @Dodgers and is known as one of the best guys in the game. In saying that, MAN has always tried to gain an edge in anyway possible, but when rules are broken you must pay the price. What’s done in the dark will come to light "

The word "man" here could have several meetings. He might be saying that man throughout history always try to cheat but when found out, the price is to be paid.

It's not at all clear that "man" refers to Cora specifically as a historic cheater.

These guys should be in politics. The continued evasion is a poor look. Feels like what we will get told as fans is directly related on what they smacked for by MLB.

Didn't Manfred issue a mandate to not speak about the investigation? I'm surprised people are tearing them to shreds about evading those qs, because I think they're being pretty accountable with regards to what they can speak about. (I think the Apple Watch falls under the investigation umbrella because of their status as repeat offenders).

Then why even have the press conference?

Do questions about asking Cora if he understood NO CHEATING when they were interviewing him doesn’t fall under the investigation umbrella?

Yes he did issue a mandate not to discuss it. Anyone who is criticizing them for not doing so is just looking for a reason to rip them and frankly is biased.

They really have no choice, since MLB is investigating them. If you are expecting the inside baseball view of a resignation meeting, that's not happening with this crew.

Because even if that investigation didn't exist, they just fired their manager due to a separate completed investigation (which, side note, Manfred also requested clubs not comment on).

If they didn't have the press conference at all, they'd get torn to pieces. And Werner said himself "there will be a time we can speak" about that.

Do questions about asking Cora if he understood NO CHEATING when they were interviewing him doesn’t fall under the investigation umbrella?
I think they probably do, because that could be a part of the repeat offender consideration.

They scheduled this PC at 1pm for a reason — not many people will watch, and it will flush through the news cycle in 12 hours.

The goal isn’t to win any PR battles; it’s to position themselves to minimize any punishment from MLB. That means strictly abiding by Manfred’s direction not to discuss anything related to the ongoing investigation, which in turn means painting the decision to move on from Cora as driven solely by what happened in Houston.

I watched the first 10-15 minutes and thought they handled it well.

By now, the reporters should know that any question they ask about cheating on the part of the Red Sox is not going to be answered, so they might as well start asking questions that will generate some information for us.

The question about the status of the coaching staff was the only good one.

That hasn't stopped Patriots reporters for the past 20 years.

When do they erect the statue to Saint Alex?

The tone of this conference is just off. YMMV.

Pretty clearly they love the guy. They don't like what he did, I'm sure, but they love the guy personally and think he was a great manager. Unlike some folks I've known, they apparently have the ability to look at the whole person, and not decide a guy is a totally bad dude for these sins.

I think it's pretty clear that they do NOT think any wrongdoing in Boston was all that bad. They would not repeatedly be asking fans to reserve judgment if they thought what he was doing in Boston poisoned the championship.

It sounds like they plan on doing a full managerial search in a condensed timeframe, or at least are currently representing that that's the plan.

What was the response (watching at work)?
Likely to have several internal candidates for the managerial role.

Doesn’t necessarily mean we’re getting an internal hire, but you have to think he answers differently (or sidesteps the question) if he thinks MLB’s findings might be dire enough to require a housecleaning.
