Third baseman Alex Bregman has agreed to a six-year, $100 million contract extension with the Houston Astros, a source confirmed to ESPN.

Bregman, 24, is coming off an All-Star season in which he finished fifth in MVP voting after posting a .926 OPS to go with 31 home runs, 103 RBIs and 10 steals.

With Bregman not eligible for free agency until after the 2022 season, the deal buys out his first two years of free agency as well as his arbitration years.
Seems light to me, but I’m sure someone will quickly prove me wrong.

2 years from FA, $100 million is a nice chunk of set-for-life change. Hard for me to argue with that decision.

This is the kind of thing the NY press has been talking about regarding Judge, who is also still under control for 4 years, through 2022. Judge is 2 years older but more of a box office draw than Bregman (I'm guessing), so I think this is the right ballpark if both sides are interested.

Bregman's 2018 is the second time in history a player has had 30HR, 50 2B, 90BB, and 10SB, and that was Gehrig's 1927 MVP year (both players also had 100+ RBI and 100+R, and of course Gehrig blew away those while Bregman was much closer to 100).

Bregman's 2018 is the first with 30/50/100RBI since Big Papi in 2007

Plus he was a GG finalist.

I would have thought he'd gotten more.

Interestingly, he announced this yesterday. You could argue that a big-money shoe deal made it less risky to wait for free agency and a big payday, but he may have figured that the shoe deal covered the money he left on the table by taking the hometown discount.

4 years from FA actually.
No, I can't argue with it either. I just wish Mookie had thought that way a couple years ago.
We all thought so around here after 2015, nevermind after 2016.

He's costing $20M in his Arb-2 year, with another year's raise to go. How much more could it possibly have been to take his risk off the table years ago?

Bregman is getting an immediate $10M bonus, that is quite the incentive in a year he was only going to make around $600K.

Oops thanks for the correction. Yeah, like it even more for him now.

He takes the bird in the hand, Mookie has been betting on the two in the bush. Different strategies that looks like will work out fine for both, though maybe not for Red Sox fans.
