cool - among other things, hopefully we can find another solid slot receiver candidate from the UDFA pool that BB has historically been so good at taking advantage of

I really wish the NFL would clean up how info on UDFA signings get confirmed. I’m not suggesting another big spectacle like the draft but something simple like at noon tomorrow all teams have to put out a press release with names of any UDFAs they’ve signed so far and then another mandatory release the next day. The amount of ambiguity and confusion about who signed who is dumb. Just clean it up a bit.

Gant from Marshall is a flat out striker at safety. Really good supporting the run.

We have a lot of mediocre young TEs on the roster, why sign more? That was always the issue with people wanting to draft a TE, there were arguably only 2 TEs in this draft who were likely to be significant improvements on what we have (maybe 3 if you stretch?) and they were going to be gone by our 1st round pick, so why bother when you have several NFL quality TEs already?

With a name like that, why can't he just rep himself?
Bob Kraft as well.

Totally agree with the point above of not signing TEs for the sake of signing TEs. Need be, they will fade the position into relative insignificance.

Terez Hall is your LB/ST.
Meyers is a big slot who can block well. Nice pickups.

Andrew Beck was an obvious one. 6'3 250#, tested out really well at his Texas pro day and two time team captain. He'll have a shot. Solid blocker, some receiving upside.

What do you make of Hall, SMU? He's got some legit juice to him, but what I watched, his football IQ was...not great. Flies around, flashes explosiveness but often runs out of the play. I just picture Belichick screaming at him after every film session.

Guard from Texas

FWIW, he played tackle at Texas (and Rice, previously, as he grad transferred to Texas). He's been working on snapping in an effort to be more valuable, but at least in college he was a good pass blocker and a pretty poor run blocker.

Both Anderson and Beck are very high character, disciplined guys (both of their fathers are colonel's in the US Army). Anderson graduated from Rice with a degree in mathematical economics and was working toward his masters in finance at Texas. Beck is a two time captain and was the unquestioned team leader, even as a mostly unproductive blocking TE. He's one of those coach's dream types.

Obviously, as undrafted free agents they face tough odds, but I'm pulling for them. They are two of the good ones.

Haven’t watched him yet in detail other than what I saw from writers who covered his visit (they post some film clips).

This is what I sourced from others:
Pats Pulpit:
What Hall may lack in size, he makes up with his physicality as a downhill defender and coverage player. An official top-30 visit solidifies the Patriots’ interest in him as the first project for new LBs coach Jerod Mayo.

Lance Zierlein:
Physical WILL linebacker whose most consistent tape notes are 'out of position' and 'aggressive play demeanor'. Hall plays with good play speed and toughness but lacks instincts and assignment discipline. While he flashes on tape, his lack of impact production might speak to his lack of desired instincts. He is a self-sufficient tackler with the athletic ability and upside, but he'll need to improve his football intelligence to become more than a short-term backup with plus special teams qualities.

He’s a tad undersized for them too. He is core special teams prospect to me.

Ryan Davis flies under the radar due to the combination of his size (5-9, 185 lb on his Auburn stats page), and playing in an offensive system that seemed at times to be actively hostile to effectively employing WR talent, but he quietly became Auburn's all time receptions leader in 2018, and also served as the team's primary punt returner. His time as a WR was often (but not always) spent receiving Coach Gus Malzahn's frequently called WR screens, so most of his yardage was gained via YAC in a crowded field rather than from running routes down the field. He set Auburn's single-season receptions record in 2017 catching passes from Stidham.

He returned punts last season too.
He just said that, yo.

Terez Hall apparently got $70K of his salary guaranteed and a $10 K bonus. I haven't heard anything about anyone else. That's an interesting indicator; OTOH, that kind of money is a drop in the bucket in terms of the salary cap and doesn't convey any special job security.

Hall reminded me a bit of Eladon Roberts. Contact, downhill player who has more pop/explosion than you'd expect from his size (6'1, 230#). He didn't look good in coverage (I mean, at all) and he'd overrun plays and shoot the wrong gap. But when he was where he was supposed to be, he got there in a hurry and with bad intentions. He was a very effective blitzer (5 sacks), he'd jack OL backwards, which you don't often see from 230# LBs. It's hard to envision him beating out Roberts in 2019 (Roberts has come a long way), but Roberts will be a free agent after the season so Hall profiles as someone who could fill that role.

Ryan Davis gave me a Bruce Ellington vibe. There's a spot in the league for that kind of player, so we'll see what Davis does with his opportunity.

I agree Roberts has come a long way, but the contract is working against him. As you note, he's only signed through 2019, where Hall has a three-year deal. Also, I don't know if people realize this, but rookie contracts, particularly late-rounders, are heavily backloaded. Roberts has made ~$1.7MM so far in his NFL career. He's under contract for a little over $2MM in 2019, with very little dead money (~$25K). Hall actually has more dead money. Basically, if it's close, Hall will have edge from a cost / roster construction standpoint. It's worth keeping in mind that, with Bentley presumably healthy, they're competing for a 4th LB role that probably isn't going to play a ton barring injury, and Roberts is nothing notable as a special teamer.

TE from Texas, Andrew Beck come on down
Known a s a blocking back and had 26 of his 40 career receptions last year:
https://www.burntorangenation.com/football/2019/4/26/18516101/andrew-beck-texas-longhorns-tight-end-2019-nfl-draft-scouting-report
I like dcmissles post that it would've been hilarious if they didn't sign a TE. It would've been such an FU from BB with everyone sure we'd go after one, and hopefully in the first round.

That said, this scouting report on Beck is very encouraging for an UDFA. He can certainly block. He was team captain. He averaged a 4.59 in the 40-yard and so might have some potential as a receiver. And can also play out of the backfield. The later quality might be bad news for James Develin

Develin is maybe the best blocking FB in the NFL. We're going to cut him for a UDFA?

I think Beck and Ryan Izzo are competing for the Dwayne Allen role. I don't think the TE who will get the most snaps in 2019 is currently on the roster.

Develin factors to be a crucial piece of the 2019 offense. If Beck makes it it might be because he can backup blocking TE and FB and potentially have some untapped passing upside (good luck). We will have surprise cuts and with their current roster they will have camp battles at every single position minus K. If Develin gets cut though I’d be shocked.

University of Texas TE Andrew Beck received the highest total of guaranteed money among Patriots undrafted free agents -- $115,000. This reflects that the Patriots had some competition to sign the 6-foot-3, 255-pound Beck, whose performance in the East-West Shrine Game (and practices leading up to the game) might have put him on the radar of more clubs. In addition to Beck, here are the guaranteed money amounts for the rest of the Patriots' undrafted class: Marshall S Malik Gant ($85k); Missouri LB Terez Hall ($85k); Auburn WR Ryan Davis ($70k); Miami C Tyler Gauthier ($70k); NC State WR Jakobi Meyers ($70k); LSU RB Nick Brossette ($37.5k); Texas OT/G Calvin Anderson ($30k); Miami OT Tyree St. Louis ($27.5k). New Mexico DB D'Angelo Ross ($17.5k). UAB WR Xavier Ubosi was previously reported to have agreed to terms with New England, but that deal has yet to be announced by the club.
