it's a hell of a secondary now. let's not set money on fire by signing asomougha when we still need a RT.
You need depth at that position.  With the depressed market, you can get a good player at a bargain price(Huff is another option with his versatility and also Grimes).  Cannon is in-house if Vollmer gets a bigger deal, but I think Vollmer comes back at their price.

I'd still like to see another corner as well. You're a tough sentence or a Darius Butler-esque sophomore slump away from being shit on one side again, and that's assuming good health from Talib.

Exactly how I feel.  One injury and Arrington is back playing on the outside.  No thank you.

That's a great idea until you're trying to convince someone who wants to start to sign and be behind 4 guys on the depth chart. 5 guys, if you assume different skillsets for slot corner vs. outside guy.

I agree they should get someone better than Marquise Cole in there, and I assume they will. But it won't be a great option and I have to imagine will happen later for short money.

I watched the first half of the week 1 Cardinals game with an eye on Wilson. The Cardinals used him in a ton of different ways: as a centerfielder, in a cover-2 shell, blitzing, down with the linebackers in run support. He spent most of his time in the box. I didn't see him playing man coverage but that might have been the matchup. He still seems to diagnose quickly, run fast, and he likes to hit - a couple times I saw him pull Rodney's patented "hit just after the whistle but not so long after that it gets a whistle."

I think he can play the role Gregory did last year; he played in the box more than anything else, but they still used him in deep coverage shells. He seems to still be versatile. I'm not sure they'll want him out there for 75+ plays, but I don't think he's just going to be a nickel LB like some are suggesting.

Another possibility: the Pats could start Gregory and Wilson and move McCourty back to CB.

my guess is they sign a few UDFA types and see what happens with dowling. if they need to cut him / add someone during camp they'll look for a veteran.

not that i wouldn't love to have another DB with a track record of not sucking, but i would prefer they bolster the lines. you can have all the DBs in the world but if the QB has 7 seconds to throw it doesn't matter.

Isn't McCourty the 3rd outside corner? They have good depth at safety so that allows Mccourty to also be depth at CB.

They have good depth at SS, but both of the Wilsons and Gregory would most likely be liabilities playing the deep FS role.

I think Talib signed while I was writing that post so now it seems extra-stupid. But would you be surprised if McCourty suits up as a CB at some point this year? I wouldn't.

I think you're right on here. I understand folks want another outside guy, but when you look at the secondary now, they have no backup for Arrington in the slot. Both Cole and Derrick Martin are free agents. McCourty, Arrington, and Dowling-if-his-hip-stays-attached can all back up the outside, even if none of those are ideal options, but I don't even see any theoretical options for backup nickelback.

Maybe Tavon Wilson?

I'd imagine he'll sign elsewhere simply for monetary or playing time considerations - but wouldn't Huff fit in nicely with the current personnel?  Considering he can play both FS & CB, I'd find it hard to believe that we couldn't get him enough snaps to make a reasonable deal worthwhile.   The question is whether "enough snaps" or "reasonable deal" will be enough to lure him here.

If they bring in another CB I'd like it to be in the draft now. Sign vollmer and draft some kid who you can maybe use as a hedge against Talib next year.
Yeah this. I like Vollmer a lot and want him to be the priority from here on out. Draft the remaining CB depth with the first or second rounder and maybe you have a Talib hedge. I think this is exactly right. Draft the guy you're not depending on being a starter. I don't like the idea of handing the job to Cannon without a viable LT backup one bit.

It is really fucking funny.

And Adrian Wilson clearly understands diapers, as he's got several boxes of each step up in size.

And Mike Reiss' (it was Pats blog - maybe not Reiss and not looking it up) suggestion that Adrian throw in some babysitting time as a sweetener is also very funny (and appropriate).

That's only about 7 months worth. He's gonna need at least two more newborn boxes, and probably one each of the other sizes.

And wipes. About 1,000 of em.

Oh believe me, we have more empty diaper boxes lying around for recycling than he's got in that picture.

It would have been funny if Wilson had promised a year's supply if diapers, and then given Arrington three cloth diapers and a bucket.

I think that's probably as many as he can get in one stack, not have it topple over, and still have his face in the photo.

But he could still add a few more to the pile and jump over it, as we've seen in the past.

Sounds like he was.  Too bad, there's not going to be a big market for a 35 year old coming off of achilles surgery.

Two more affordable years on his current deal with the Pats and the fact they didn't release him with an injury settlement indicates they at least want to see him after rehab to gauge whether he's got anything left in the tank. Good guy to have around the facility regardless, and I'm rooting for him to overcome the high odds against him.

Is it clear when he sustained the achilles injury? I recall him playing with the flotsam players near the end of pre-season and not being able to cover anyone. Maybe he was just hiding the injury in training camp for fear of getting cut? I never recall anybody announcing why he went on IR until this tweet.

We really could have used a healthy version of this guy.

Reiss today says Wilson would have likely been cut for skill if he had not gone on IR:

Nemanja (Vranje, Serbia)

Mike, what's going on with Adrian Wilson? Is he with the team? Will he be in the Pats uniform next season?
Mike (12:50 PM)

Technically he's under contract, but I'd be surprised if he's back. Probably wasn't going to make the team coming out of training camp/preseason.

Back reading how insanely pumped people were about this signing is pretty entertaining.

I thought he might get a chance to make the team in August.

10 bucks Florio comes out with a story soon questioning if the evil Patriots cut a veteran player just to give Darrelle Revis his number.

Funny how quickly things change.   If you had told me two years ago that the Pats would choose to keep Patrick Chung over Adrian Wilson, I'd offer to drive you to rehab.

This is among the least surprising transactions we've seen this off-season.  Sorry it couldn't work out, but the guy didn't look good for AZ two years ago.  Glad for the cap space, minimal as it may be.
