I mean, one could argue that if the conference has a tournament they are effectively in it. Just that the early rounds are within conference.

This sent me down a mental rabbit-hole of growing up in the mid-90s in the prime of UMass basketball that ended with me discovering that Edgar Padilla Jr. is now a walk-on at Illinois and generally just feeling old as shit because of it.

This is a stupid idea. Why bother playing or trying at all in the regular season if every 1A school gets in?

LOL. I'm a W&M alum -- it's been such a monkey on the back of the program and really the entire athletic department. My great fear has been that we finally get in and then get blown out in a First Four game. This sort of strikes me as even worse.

I bet the top 32-64 seeds get some protection from early round games. There would be a couple rounds of byes. Kind of like the ACC Tournament.

The only change(s) to the tourney I'd like to see happen is to get rid of the play in games and go back to 64 teams. And have the tourney be double elimination. Double elimnation has both the effect of creating more upsets and rectifying some. And the losers bracket games could be played at during the same times as the winners (possibly having to add an addional regional site). Really the only issue would be if the loser's bracket team beat the winner and having to extend the tourney 2-3 days, but that would also mean more $.

I wonder if they think the regular one season is likely to be plagued by missed games, quarantines, etc. so at least you have a long money-making tournament? And teams are free to do whatever the need to do to get through the regular season OK knowing they have the tournament.

It’s one step beyond what mlb is doing, with this weird little season followed by a sixteen team tournament.
