However, by not reaching the 700 HR milestone, the Yankees do save money on that.
700 wasn't one of the milestones, although I had to look it up to be sure:

"$30M marketing agreement based on home run milestones, paying $6M each for reaching 660, 714, 755 and tying (762) and breaking (763) major league HR record"

Well, if they pay him everything he's owed and he doesn't have to go through the grind of everyday baseball at 41 years old, that has to be a little appealing, right?
As long as they pay him everything he's owed, sure. My point is that I never saw him accepting anything less. And he shouldn't.

Whoever decided to start benching him every day a few weeks ago is a genius, whether it was Girardi or Cashman or Hal (I'm guessing a combo of the first two).

If he hits 3 HRs on Friday, do you think they'll let him play Saturday? :)

Pretty silly that they made that 'mandatory attendance' for the whole Yankee roster, but whatever.

The report on the bottom of the screen said A-Rod would be "unconditionally released." It didn't say A-Rod will retire. When a player is unconditionally released, he gets all of his money, the contract stands.

So A-Rod didn't do the Yankees any favors in that regard.

As much as I love to bash ARod, I have to say he was good in the broadcaster's booth last fall during the playoffs. Stopped my ears from bleeding after listening to Harold Reynolds.

Cashman just specifically confirmed this, they're not trying to get out of his deal or transfer it to an advisor deal.

Kudos to Hal for pushing this and not worrying about the money owed, the roster spot is the important thing.

He is a reasonably articulate guy as far as baseball players go. He speaks Spanish and that has value for the Yankees who have a lot of Latin American players in their system.

Cash confirms he'll be released after Friday and gets all his money.

Good, he was fantastic. Though when you are being evaluated compared to Aaron Boone, and Harold Reynolds, that is a bit of a low bar. regardless, a broadcast team of Pedro, Arod, and The Eck, would be a must watch.

Wish it was Belichick giving this press conference.

"Alex is a great player. Just doing what we think gives the team the best chance to win."

Don't tell me that the release is Friday (instead of immediately or after todays game) is so they can sell tickets to the game.

After dealing with the worst, it's easy to think the next one in a relationship is great. Give it some time.

Strange term "marketing agreement". Seems performance or milestone agreement are more appropo,

They're saying it's so that A-Rod's family can come to one last home game, and Saturday is the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the 1996 team, and Sunday is a Mariano Rivera tribute day, so it fits well.

Would that sort of calculated decision be the least bit shocking? The Yankees are a business so it makes perfect sense. Even more when you consider the fact they are going to pay him superstar money for years to be an "advisor" after that game.

Wow. So all they get out of this is a roster spot and the luxury of not having ARod in the clubhouse.
I mean, that's not nothing, and it allows them to protect an additional young player on the 40 man this winter.

True enough, but the roster spot has been freed and the circus will come to an end shortly. Perhaps the best the Yankees could have hoped for.

Speculation on the Yankees pregame show that the Red Sox will groove a few to A-Rod so he can reach 700 at Fenway.

I didn't hear this, but man is that idiotic (from them obv, not you). Last I checked, Boston was in a pennant race and needs every game desperately...

He'd still miss. And that's never happen.

I hope Boston ignores him entirely. No ceremony, o acknowledgment, nothing.

Well maybe they can make it a handbag giveaway game ...

The "sendoff" at Fenway this week should be very interesting.
will Joe play him @ Fenway?
Doesn't take Ms Cleo (RIP) to see how he's going to be sent off at Fenway.
Doesn't seem like they'll let him hit in Boston. Damnit would have loved to see that reaction.

If the reception is ANYTHING other than a torrential rain storm of boos and heckling, I will be sorely disappointed in my RSN brethren. No quasi-respectful applause for a career well-done. If the Yes naval gazers think the Sox are going to groove anything, they're even more ridiculous than they outwardly appear. That said, I might guess he'll pop one over the Monster for his walk-off, because he's a gigantic douche and it would be somehow fitting.

This whole, announcing a week before, bullshit has me imagining being in the final negotiations and hearing AWad ask for one more crack at a series vs. the Sox at Fenway and it makes me kind of puke a little bit. "But no, I'm going to be done at Tampa... it's not about that." Bullshit. Fuck you, Aroid. May you go 0-fer and be left off every HOF ballot for eternity.

Eh, he was annoying and self-absorbed and needlessly used steroids to make himself epic even though he would have been great without them. And then lied and lied.

He did volunteer to take a pay cut to come to Boston, but I'm so glad that the trade didn't go through. (I wish the Jason Bay trade had also collapsed). And he can be insightful and articulate: he's a bright guy.

Yankee fans hate ARod because of the first sentence above, but mostly because his agent hypnotized them into giving ARod a ridiculous extension for no clear reason.
Hal deserves that scorn. But he did get them the 2009 title so maybe it was worth the money.

He's a no-doubt HOF for me. If I were at Fenway I'd give him about twenty seconds of light applause, or maybe silence; not sure.

If any Red Sox fans cheer him after over a dozen years of booing him they are hypocrites. Simple as that.
Listen, we boo'd Magic, we boo'd Jeter... you can boo a guy and then ultimately give him his due respect as he walks away. I don't have any trouble with that at all. But this guy deserves none of that. NONE.

I'll risk being the pedant and point out he was traded to the Yankees, he didn't sign there.
And we did give up Soriano, which most people forget. Still a great trade, but So
Traded to the Yankees before the 2004 season and opted out during Game 4 of the 2007 World Series *fuck you very much Mr. Rodriguez!*, and then re-signed as a free agent back with the Yankees. So technically yes, he was a free agent signing

I'd cheer him simply because he had a hall of fame career and it's coming to an end.

What did he do to deserve such odium? Take steroids? Cool.
