Pretty simple from a pitching aspect. Eddie needs to have a good fastball, consistently 93-94 MPH, to have a chance at success. If he's averaging 91, he's going to get clobbered. There just won't be enough separation between fastball and change to survive the right handed bats of MFY.

This might not be a do-or-die situation... but it's getting close.
A Sox win today win will leave them heading into the final week, with a one game lead, against pretty weak opponents. It'll also leave the following Yankees series as a knife fight in a phonebooth for that 2nd WC spot with the likely winner of that series looking in.
It's good baseball... but for fucksake is it frustrating! Sox have had soooooo many chances to put some distance between themselves and then they go and act like a bunch of fuckin' assholes. I'm sick of it. Everyone is sick of it. I don't want to see SJH's posts on this board any more. Make them stop!!!!!!

To put some numbers on that. . .

If we lose tonight, we're at 88-68, one game behind the Yanks for the WC2 spot.

NY (89-67 winning today): 3 at TOR, 3 with TBR.
BOS (88-68 losing today): 3 at BAL, 3 at WSN
TOR (87, 69 winning today): 3 with NYY, 3 at BAL.

If you balance their records, in a sort of Worst-Sox scenario, NY and TOR could end up with 93 and 92 victories. That means the Sox would have to win 4 of the last 6 to tie, 5 to have a WC spot all to their own.

Do NY and TOR do that?

92 wins for TOR means 5 wins in 6 games - e.g. at least 2 in NYY and all 3 Baltimore games.
92 wins for NY means 3 wins in 6 games - they can drop all 3 with TOR and win 3 in Baltimore.
92 wins for BOS means 4 wins in 6 games.

However, a tie for WC2 would be sort of disastrous. TOR remains the weak team here. If NYY wins 2 of 3 against them, the Sox are in UNLESS they self-immolate.

Fuck the math

Fuck the multi team iterations of what might happen

ALL BS aside most here, deep inside, understand the Sox limitations and who they are and how far they might go in the post-season, if they get there

But we like to dream and feed our hopes

TONIGHT'S IMPORTANT

JUST WIN TONIGHT

AND FUCK THE MFY

I'm going with Eduardo does OK, but he's over 70 pitches and wobbly in the 4th. Someone out of the pen finishes the 4th, then it's Richards for 3 IP. Barnes and Ottavino to finish.

Yeah, it's not that convincing. Win anyway.

This is the ‘21 Red Sox collective version of the Tim Wakefield 13th inning of Game 5 ‘04 ALCS.
Let’s hope that Cora has just been toying with the MFY’s the last two months the way Wakefield could have just struck out the side but wanted to just give a glimmer of hope because the soul crushing is so much more enjoyable

Yesterday was a heartbreak, but win tonight and we're in a very strong position for the last week of the season. Win tonight and then enjoy the MFY-TOR "knife fight in a phone booth" (thanks SLT).

Other than the Ryder Cup, this has the potential to be a pretty awful sports weekend.

I hope the Sox do something about that.

This game is, of course, blacked out on MLB.TV, which saves me from having to watch. Probably good, since I watched the shitty parts of the last two games. Let's get this one and then move on to the cupcakes.
