Four players have at least 10 PAs and an OPS over .800 for this year's Yankees:

Matt Carpenter-1.138 (still so funny to me that he is ahead of Judge, if I were him I'd be busting Judge's balls about this)
Aaron Judge-1.118
Anthony Rizzo-.829
Oswald Peraza-.814

Please give this kid at least 3-4 more starts in the final 10 games.

Big test for Severino tonight in his second of three starts before the regular season ends. TOR has a lot to play for in this series, they are trying to stay in the #4 spot and they lose tiebreakers to both TB and SEA.

1 RF Aaron Judge
2 1B Anthony Rizzo
3 2B Gleyber Torres
4 3B Josh Donaldson
5 DH Giancarlo Stanton
6 LF Oswaldo Cabrera
7 CF Harrison Bader
8 SS Isiah Kiner-Falefa
9 C Jose Trevino

The more TOR wins, the more likely they are to be on the other side of the bracket from NY, that lineup is scary and relentless.

No idea how Vlad got a hit on the hard grounder right at IKF that led to the first two runs for TOR. IKF made some good plays today too (and some other flubs), but Peraza is better and he is sitting right there.

IKF also cost Severino another inning, he only had 80 pitches today but he should have been scoreless through 4 around 60. Hard ball but a true bounce and right at him, have to get two there instead of none, should have been two outs, bases empty, but instead first and second, no one out.

Severino looked great though, he is going right at guys and throwing FBs in the zone by them, plus his silder looks great. He hit 98 to get a K on his last pitch, #76. He is definitely their #3.

You know, Josh Donaldson really isn't my favorite player. Seems like he could be a bit of chucklehead. But I sure do like watching him play 3B. Sure he can pick it, but man, what a gun.

Smooth turn by IKF there! Very similar ball to yesterday, bullet right at him and today he turned it easily, huzzah.

Donaldson and Stanton are both so dead offensively, I agree that Donaldson's D at 3B has been absolutely spectacular and I think he will win the Gold Glove, but I can't help but fantasize about a healthy DJ and Carpenter replacing those two at 3B and DH. It sounds like DJ will be activated either tomorrow or Friday at home against BAL.

My man Bader has also gone cold, 2 for his last 14 and many of those pretty feeble.

Am I the only one who doesn’t think much of this Jays team? The 13-3 record vs the Red Sox kind of inflates their overall record. 74-65 vs the rest of baseball. The offense is feast or famine. Even with home field I could see them losing in the WC round.

The postseason rotation now seems pretty clearly (unless there's a specific matchup I don't know about):

Cole
Cortes
Severino
Taillon

Then if there is a game 5, you start whoever of Cole/Cortes pitched better the first time, both will be on full rest, you can use the other as the second guy in if you think that is the way to go.

NY also clinches a tie with CLE no matter what happens in that game and they won the season series 5-1, so they are definitely the #2 seed. They still have a mathematical chance to pass HOU but are 6 back with 8 left.

So even with a locked in playoff position, they have a bunch to play for in the final 8 games, from a team perspective.

100 wins is always special, NY needs to go 5-3 from here for that.

Also I think if HOU wins their ALDS series, NY has basically zero chance to get past them, but if they somehow did win two series, home field in the WS depends on record and NYY are just behind both NYM and ATL who still have a series against each other.

Back to back OF assists was pretty cool too, even if that Bichette call is one I hate (safe and then a tiny bit off the base and the tag is held).

I don't hate it. IKF was specifically making that precise play and sneakily watching his foot. It was perfect execution and the number 1 rule or baserunning. Keep your foot on the bag.

NY is leading MLB in both walkoff wins (16) and walkoff losses (11), no wonder this season has seemed so stressful.

@terrynever , you're getting the ball for the BAL series starting Friday, so if you need to start warming up early, time to start stretching. :)

Also I bet 2 or 3 of those first 3 were NL batters hitting directly in front of the pitcher.

So what would be the theoretical best?

I'm not going to look up numbers, but I think it would look something like this:

C: Trevino
1B: Rizzo. He bails out so many bad throws and I value that more than any increased range that Marwin might give them. I think DRS hates him though and I'm not sure that is a 1B thing with DRS.
2B: Cabrera, though I'm not sure on this one.
3B: Donaldson
SS: Peraza
LF: Hicks, at least at home. Maybe Cabrera elsewhere with DJ or Gleyber at 2B. Not sure.
CF: Bader
RF: Judge. I'm sure Locastro has better range, but Judge is good and I'm pretty sure has a better arm. Maybe much better.

I would not be surprised at all if IKF was fantastic at 2B if given some time there. Doesn't need as good an arm there as compared to SS and 3B and I think that is his biggest problem.

OK, guys. Feel free to tell me how poorly calibrated my eyes are. :)

I’m also not sure about 2B or LF but basically I agree with all of that.

What’s awful is the move for DJ is likely going to be Peraza optioned down, seemingly ending his season (Scranton’s season ends tonight). Maybe they can option Locastro instead…

If DJ is back, do they really lose anything if Marwin goes away?

I know they won't do it, but I'd love it if Peraza goes off tonight and they decide to keep him around.

Don't really want to see Locastro get sent down either. Nice to have a strong PR and reliabke OF on the bench.

Marwin is more of a clubhouse thing at this point, and I think he's on the roster at least half to tutor Cabrera (both Venezuelans who have been asked to play many positions, Cabrera really looks up to Marwin):

https://www.mcall.com/sports/yankees/ny-oswaldo-cabrera-marwin-gonzalez-aaron-judge-aaron-boone-20220922-oaswhuhokjbcvfebshbdtba3am-story.html

I think if he has made it this far, they're not going to cut him. They could always bring back Locastro for the postseason, but it'd be nice for Peraza to get some more starts in the final week.

I do understand some deference being paid to a veteran ballplayer who has paid his dues and has accepted his job as a roleplayer with class.

Maybe good leadership from management to recognize what Marwin brings to the table beyond youth and skills.

Heh. I was already rethinking/updating my position on Marwin as you posted, JA. Good post and thanks for the reminder on the Venezuelan aspect of it.
