Awful baserunning decision by Soto there, stop making the third out on the basepaths with Judge up next!

Soto makes some contextually dumb baserunning decisions. Like does he know Judge was the tying run?

It's even worse, if he just stays at first, they probably don't IBB Judge but if he makes it to second, they probably do. I am all for aggressiveness but that is Gleyber-level baserunning.

HOU holds off CLE and NY backs into the #1 seed with a 1-4 homestand. They are 93-68, really terrible year for the AL, I would pick any of PHI/LAD/SD to emerge if they were on the AL side but as it is, I'd make HOU the strong favorites.

"Since August 1 Trent Grisham has two HR in 39 PA

Alex Verdugo has 3 in 169"

Verdugo should not even be on the postseason roster, let alone starting.

I guess I'd like to know why Grisham hasn't gotten regular time in LF, especially before Dominguez was up and Verdugo was struggling.

If he can't manage it for whatever reason, Verdugo needs to stick around because Dominguez is shaky there.

And I know Judge has a little time in LF, but I just don't think he's comfortable there or wants to do it, at least at the stadium.

Doubt the organization wants push it.

Verdugo was better defensively in LF in the first part of the year than he has been in the second half, his D has faded along with his offense (but not nearly as badly, he is still fine there, just not superb like he was early on).

Dunno, I just never want to see Verdugo suit up for NY again.

I agree.

Even though he's solid in the field, I hate how Verdugo looks doing it. I hate how awkward and uncomfortable he looks at the plate, like he needs to take a shit or something. And of course I hate his punchable face.

I'm not a fan. I expected to see Grisham get time in LF this year and I'm disappointed he hasn't. There has to be a reason that makes sense. I can't quite believe he's unable to handle that big LF.

NY is unbelievably shitty at deploying their own talent, it's the main thing underlying recent Yankee history.

Good win, but not much to take aways from it heading into the playoffs. Gleyber is still playing great. Rice is not, but he just got back. Mayza, Hamilton, Weaver and Holmes were fine. Schmidt and Leiter Jr. were not. Weather was crap and probably affected some guys more than others.

Rizzo has a fractured finger, please just use Ben Rice.
Would you really rather see Rice get the chance than Oswaldo? I think Oswaldo deserves it. Rice has looked overmatched at the plate for quite a while, despite his success at AAA.

I didn’t see him today, but I like the power and patience, 31 HRs and 77 BBs in just 438 ABs across AA/AAA/MLB. Neither of them can hit lefties.

I'd rather see Cabrera at 1B too. He hasn't been spectacular, but he's been solid enough over the last few months. And all at the MLB level. I like his potential, but Rice hasn't been.

Right now I'm still getting Greg Bird vibes.

Please let it be so! If he plays, I want to see the July version of Rice, just like when we were still dreaming on what Bird could be.

So who are you guys rooting for in BAL/KC? I think it's pretty even and NY could lose to either (or really any postseason team) but KC I think has much more pitching. Either way, have to root for it to go 3.

Ragans leaves with calf cramps. Probably won't affect him if they make it to the DS, but you never know.

Also who should start the game 1 thread? I did the final week of the regular season where NY went 2-3, so not me. I nominate either @ThePrideofShiner, who went 6-2 in the next to last week of the regular season and is the hot hand, or @Wingack , who when I went back and checked just now, was the only one with back to back wins in the 2022 postseason.

Whoever it is, put your heart into it, and if someone else feels especially inspired/lucky, speak up.

My heart hasn’t been in this season but I’m excited for the playoffs. Recommend someone else starts the threads but happy to be a backup

I think I started last year, and that didn’t exactly work out.

But I will lead the charge if I am called upon.

No postseason last year, that is why Michael King got a chance to get in the rotation down the stretch and how we ended up with Soto (and the Padres ended up with an ace through 2025).

Oh, you meant you started the season opener in 2023, good point.

OK, what do you think, @ThePrideofShiner ? Only if you're feeling up to it, otherwise we'll draft someone else.

Yankees-Royals, if it happens, will bring back some great memories and old film clips from 1976-80. That was an intense rivalry! Hal McRae barreling into Willie Randolph at second base.

I was so young but my other strong memories of that rivalry are:

Chambliss with a game-winning ALCS HR in '76
Regular season, but who can forget George Brett's face in the Pine Tar game? Maybe the angriest I have ever seen another person.
And Brett getting NY and Goose Gossage back by hitting a homer into the upper deck in the 1980 postseason.

We just knew Brett was going to take Goose deep. It was a majestic blast into the third deck.

Were you out of puberty by then?

Okay. You were 13 in 1980. Great video of McRae and Willie, and Billy. You grew up watching a really interesting group of Yankees. Those guys wore mustaches and Oscar Gamble had the big hair. George killed them off by 1982. Reggie was smart to leave when he did.

I've been meaning to say this all year but not sure if I ever actually have, I think it all the time...

Trent Grisham seems to me to be a time travelling export from this era, like if Paul Blair was a Yankee. Oscar Gamble is even the teammate name I always think of, it's both how Grisham plays and how he looks. I am a fan, to be clear.

So NY presumably faces Michael Wacha in game 1, Gleyber and Judge are a combined 2-34 career against him. Awesome.

Yes, I see that now that you mention those two. Just the way he carries himself in the field, smooth runner, kind of times his running catches. Blair was an amazing CF, even as an older player in pinstripes. Grisham has been underutilized, of course. He’s got power and has hit pretty well after his brutal start. Against a speedy team like KC, you better have airtight defense in the OF.

Wow, that seems borderline impossible.

Wacha is kind of a weird case. He's played a full season for a different team in 6 straight seasons, but without being traded once. Just 5 straight free agencies. Has had 9 WAR over the last 3 seasons so you'd think someone would have kept him around. The streak is over next year as he signed a 2 year deal this time around

I think another reason you start Rice over Cabrera at 1B is that then you are much more flexible in the potential use of Duke Ellis as a pinch runner.

They announced the starting times and all 5 potential games in this series are night games, which is good for our oft sluggish in the sun lineup.

It seems counterintuitive, but somehow the Yankees had an OPS+ of 118 in day games and only 112 at night. It seems all BABIP-related though, .296 in day games vs .276 at night. I guess fielders really are measurably worse at converting outs in the sun? Either that or it was luck, as I doubt the Yankees' quality of contact was better in the day, given their K rate was worse during day games.

Judge was still all-time-great level during day games, but his K rate was significantly higher, around 30% in day vs just over 21% in night games.
