2 more against BAL, then they go to MIN for 3 against the fading Twins and NY has 3 at home against the Pirates. NY needs just one of those eight games to go their way to clinch the AL East.

Some rain around tonight and quite a bit more tomorrow, might be a bit tricky getting these next two in.

What’s the playoff rotation if Nestor can’t start? Cole, Rodon, Gil, Schmidt? Nestor’s injury could hurt the bullpen more. You lose one starter who could have been the long inning reliever. Stroman back on the roster, maybe.

This sounds right to me. I think Schmidt might have been the fourth starter anyway, given what Nestor provided the bullpen as a LHP. Not being able to plug him in for a couple of innings in a close game is a big loss for the playoffs.

Stroman provides no such confidence, especially in front of an infield defense with too many yips and yoinks.

The schedule is such that they only need three guys for the first series, assuming they actually finish winning the division at some point.

Worst defensive team in pinstripes that I can remember. Not just tonight. Volpe has been shaky for a month now. Jazz at third. Gleyber at second. Dominguez in left. Soto in right.

Or vice versa. Stroman seems to be taking the sloppy defense in stride. Keeping Yanks in the game.

I was joking, and yeah, I agree. I think he's a good teammate and probably appreciated as so.

I'm just disappointed in the defense this year. I thought it would be a strength for the team, with the exception of Soto in RF and my erroneous assumption that Gleyber would be moved at some point and we'd probably have Peraza up and playing regularly.

It’s the worst good team I have seen. So many places where things can go wrong. Defense, relief pitching, baserunning.

Luckily the whole league is pretty bad but the Astros will probably make the WS again.

I like Stroman and he does his best with what seem like fading tools but I really hope we do not see him again this season, regular or post. He is a contact guy though and needs his defenders to make plays, and NY certainly has not done that tonight.

Dominguez has been a problem defensively but again NY waits too long to let prospects play the position they may actually play in MLB. For instance, It took them literally years longer than it should have to try Miguel Andujar in LF. Dominguez only played 58 games in LF in 4 seasons, 239 in CF. He hits ropes though, even if they go right at fielders sometimes. Also he is impressively confident for such a young player, I think he will fix it quickly and we will continue to be scared every time a ball goes in his direction for a while.

Also I love Jazz but he sure makes a lot of mistakes. They are mistakes of commission (trying) as opposed to omission, and of course he has not played 3B before, but there are a lot. I think he could be a superstar 2B though, hopefully he is much more consistent there.

Judge's 2 balls in play today have been hit 115.3 and 113.3 mph, in case anyone was interested

Beeter probably lost any shot to make the postseason roster today, Poteet currently auditioning.

Jazz caught a grounder earlier, looked at the baseball in his hand, hopped a couple times, then gunned down the runner. He scares me. Volpe scares me. Dominguez just needs more game experience in left, and long pre-game sessions in each park during the playoffs. As O’Neill pointed out tonight, corner outfielders have to deal with more spin than you see in CF.

Soto has been shaky of late, too. Does it look like he’s running okay? Seems to be limping at times. Nothing he can’t play through.

Late rally features No. 57 for Judge. 3-run shot. Now has 142 RBI. Pinball numbers.

That’s the most RBIs anyone has had since Ryan Howard had 146 in 2008.

Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez both came up in the second half of 2016, and were on a similar career HR pace for a while, hard as it may be to believe now.

2016-2020 HRs

Judge 119 (1518 ABs)
Sanchez 115 (1549 ABs)

2021-2024 HRs

Judge 195 (2039 ABs)
Sanchez 68 (1277 ABs)

Not supposed to start raining until after midnight, but it's very humid today, so the balls may be jumping.

Anthony Volpe is the first Yankee to strike out multiple times in an inning since Greg Bird, July 9, 2018, which also came against the Orioles. In the nine prior such games since 1969, the Bombers are 9-0.

9-0 sounds about right, since the 8 guys in between those 2 strikeouts could only have made 0 or 1 outs combined, so that's a minimum of 4 runs scored in that situation (but likely more)

Wells really was the pivotal AB there, hanging in against the lefty and not jumping at crap. Perez really needed a 1st pitch strike after that, which is Stanton's time to shine

Every night Judge's box score line is just filled with different numbers

Just watched the replay of that, and he had this clear "agh i missed it" reaction, while the pitcher did the opposite "agh of course". Then Jazz did the "what the hell was that"

The O's had 3 infield singles in a 5 batter sequence across the 8th and 9th, which should only be allowed when one team is up 10 or more runs

Still need to clinch #1. Still need to go bopping in the postseason. Far from done. I don't think I got terribly excited over tonight. Not sure if it's because I'm getting old or because I expect bigger and better things from this team because they're good enough to do so.

Congrats guys! I was out tonight watching the game and it was awesome to see some good Yankees moments.

@Brand Name I think that's fair but this team a month ago was "here's why we won't win" and now there are some suddenly positive signs for how they could succeed. I'll take it!

Judge and Stanton each went deep for the 14th time this season. Tonight's longballs make them tied for the most with Maris/Mantle in 1961 for the most such games in a single season in Yankees franchise history. Judge and Soto are at 13 if curious.

I think you gotta enjoy this. The first goal every season is to win the division, and it's such a long road to get there. They were in second for such a long time, and they pulled it off. I wish the baseball community valued winning the division or the league more because it's a huge accomplishment, separate from whatever happens in the playoffs. We spent months watching this team, and we should celebrate it.

Also, I grew up a Yankees fan in Orioles territory during the Jeffery Mayer years (we moved from NY, I wasn't a frontrunner). I hate the Orioles. They're 1B on the shit list to the Sox for me. Fuck the O's. This is awesome.

Winning the AL East is always sweet, even if NY is still just 43-44 after the 50-22 start.

#1 seed in the AL is still in play but also potential home field in the WS against the top NL teams:

NY 93-66
CLE 92-67

PHI 94-65
MIL 91-68
LAD 94-64/SD 91-67 (playing currently, SD 2-0 in the 7th)

NY wins the head to head tiebreak against all of those teams except the Dodgers.

Easy to overlook but a big bases loaded walk from a struggling Austin Wells against a lefty to make it 2-0, before Stanton broke it open.
