TB just went up 8-6 on TOR in the 8th, if that holds NY is up 9 in the loss column with 12 left.

I never remember a bullpen like this, potentially almost anyone there could get in a groove and be good enough to close games for the remainder of the season, but basically all of them are not reliable right now.
Yanks will live or die in the playoffs with this erratic bullpen. They need Britton to regain his 95 mph sinker. Doubtful. But we can dream.

Can't wait for the waves of 'my bad' from all the people who shit on Cashman over the Montgomery/Bader deal.

I am still hoping for Ridings but he is obviously running out of time. We need to see Britton and Effross tomorrow, let's see how they look.

TB wins 10-6, NY now 9 up with 12 to go.

Cashman's deadline bet that NY could not blow a division lead that big was challenged, but he is looking good right now.

Boone mentioned six different guys after the game tonight as potential closers off the top of his head and that did not include Chapman (!) or Marinaccio (just 20 hits allowed in 41 innings).

I could give two shits about other teams complaining about strike zones this year. It's been a fucking abomination against the yankees and particularly Judge.

Another interesting play early in this one, Gleyber got picked off first. I think this actually helped NY a bit, because Donaldson then flared one into short center that fell right between three fielders, but assuming someone was covering second, I think they get a force play on Gleyber there so Donaldson would have been at first instead of second. Didn't matter as the next two Yankees got out anyway, but you don't see a pickoff actually helping the picked off player's team too often.

I love Bader.
5-0 now since he has been activated, and he has had at least one crucial play in each, even the one he didn't come in until the 8th.

6 in a row overall, also 5-0 since @ThePrideofShiner started threads and since @terrynever came back.

Britton's inning looks terrible in the box score, but very nice to see that he had his velocity, I saw at least one 95. Obviously he needs to throw strikes, but he needs the velocity to be effective and it looks like he may have it.

Effross's inning also looked worse than it was, Devers fisted a single the other way, Bogaerts barely got touched by a HBP, two outs, pitching around Casas to pitch to the righty Dalbec. Obviously both of those guys need work over the final 11 games.

Britton hadn't used Pitchcom before, we forget about these small but important things.

Oh, and 6-0 since Rizzo is back, they cannot afford to lose him this winter, dodgy back and all.

If we can figure out the bullpen in the next few days, I think we might have a shot at this thing.

At what point do we test our starters in relief?

I think we did with German a few days ago, though maybe he was just the opener. But I kind of doubt we'll see too much experimentation with that. Too many bullpen arms to figure out post-season roles for, or not.

Who? Cole/Cortes/Severino/Taillon is the rotation, German pitched in relief pretty recently, Montas I highly doubt is going to make a postseason roster. They have no shortage of relievers, they just have no idea which ones they can trust.

OK, I did not realize all of this, wow. This is from the 2021 section of Bader’s Wikipedia page:

“On defense, Bader's .973 zone rating was the highest by any Major League outfielder in history since the category began being tracked in 1987.[10] He led major league baseball outfielders in SABR defensive index (14.4), ultimate zone rating(11.4), putouts/9 innings (2.93), range factor/9 (2.97), and zone rating (.973). He led NL outfielders in outs above average (13) and runs prevented (12), and was 3rd in defensive runs saved (15).[10]

Maybe some rain issues with this one, too bad it's not a day game.

Jon -- here is one of the reasons I ask: a while back Henry was asked about giving Devers a huge contract and he equivocated, then said something to the effect of "well for the right player we would." That struck me, as it seemed to me from the context that it was not Devers he was thinking of. Granted that I am speculating here, but I thought about it and wondered if he would authorize what you just stated: a 10/350 contract. If -- and I do mean if -- that happened, there is no way the Yanks would allow Judge to go to Boston. It would be Ruth in reverse

If you’re going to speculate, someone young like Juan Soto makes a lot more sense there than Judge, who will be playing his age 31 season next year. I’d say that’s more about leaving the possibility open in general than referencing anyone specific though.

Great ABs by Pham and Xander to open this inning, really making Nestor work hard.

NY is extremely lucky that they are not in a one game wild card again this year (I know they are gone in general) because they would almost certainly have to go with Cortes over Cole at this point.

Good hustle by Hicks to score from first, easily could have half-assed that.

Bello looks like a problem for opposing teams, although he is going to need to speed his approach way up starting next season.
