From the GCL game log:

  • GCL Red Sox pitcher Michael Kopech left the game due to an injured arm.

Yikes!   Hopefully, Speier will be able to get information on this and it is not serious.

With Pawtucket's roster bursting at the seams both for active players and reserve slots, some moves to clear space:

Mike Antonellis ‏@seadogsradio 10m
C Jayson Herandez received from Pawtucket’s DL and placed on Portland’s DL…RHP Mike McCarthy received from Triple-A Pawtucket.

This allows the PawSox to add Wright (optioned from BOS) and to activate RHRP Brayan Villareal from the DL (he played last night on a rehab assignment, not on the active roster). It also leaves them with 14 pitchers and 12 position players (including Lavarnway, who's still rehabbing).

Meanwhile they've still got Snyder, Roberts & Herrera all on the DL.

* Cody Kukuk tossed 5 shutout innings tonight on just 2 H with 6 K. He also had 4 walks, and 3 of those came in the 4th inning. But twice he had situations (4th & 5th innings) with runners on 2nd & 3rd. I'm suggesting these might have been "unintentional intentional" walks (or at least making sure the batter got nothing good to swing at) to load the bases. If that was the case, then it worked in each case as he escaped without damage. Matty Ott threw a scoreless 6th with 2 K to maintain a 1-0 Salem lead.

* Jamie Callahan with a similar line for Greenville (6 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 4 BB, 3 K, 88 pitches, 51 strikes), but his walks were scattered across 4 different innings. Jason Garcia coming on to pitch the 7th with a 3-0 lead.

* New arrival Danny Bethea started behind the dish tonight for Greenville and threw out two runners attempting to steal over the first 4 innings.

Travis with almost as many walks in Greenville (3 in 21 PA) as he had in Lowell (4 in 169 PA).

Along with tonight's walk he's 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles & 2 RBI. His low-A career is off to a 9-for-18 start with a .500/.571/.778/1.349 line over his first 5 games. Man, I just love small sample sizes.

Make that 3 scoreless with 2 H, 1 BB & 4 K. His ERA for Salem drops to 1.86 with a 20/4 K/BB over 19.1 innings since being sent down from Portland.

Ruh roh. After 2 scoreless relief innings to back up Callahan, it looked as if Jason Garcia would waltz through the 9th to close out a 5-0 Greenville win. But after getting the leadoff man swinging, he's gone single-single-walk-strikeout (run scores on WP)-double (2 R score).

EDIT - Nice. He strikes out the side as Gabriel Corner gets caught looking to end it. Drive win, 5-3.

Shit. Nate Reed surrenders the tying run in the t-9th, costing Kukuk a win. Lynchburg goes single-bunt-double.

Salem batting in the bottom half.

EDIT - Matt Gedman gets a 2-out single, but he's thrown out trying to stretch it to a double. On to extras.

A bust as 2nd round draft pick outfielder, Williams Jerez resurfaces as a pitcher in the GSL where he's currently 3-1 with 27 Ks in 24 IP. Jerez struck out 7 against a hit and no walks in 3 innings of relief tonight.

My son played against Jerez for 4 years in high school, and doesn't remember ever seeing him pitch.

With all the frenzy going on at the big league level and the bevy of pitching prospects that the Red Sox have, it was interesting that after Kukuk's big outing on July 25th, Speier wrote (emphasis added): "For the year, Kukuk is averaging 10.1 strikeouts per nine innings, the best rate of any Red Sox starter, with the sort of electricity in his arm that is unmatched in the system."

While that was probably just a bit of giddy hyperbole, it's kind of amazing the depth and breadth of arms that the Sox have.  And if the Sox can get Kukuk, Bell, Buttery, and/or McGrath to figure things out, it may be an embarrassment of riches.

They're into the 12th now and Lynchburg had 2 batters reach in the top half but both were erased on the basepaths. Jake Romanski gunned down David Nick trying to steal 2nd after a single, and Nate Reed picked off Jose Martinez after a 2-out walk to end the inning. Since blowing the save, Reed's redeemed himself somewhat with three scoreless frames.

Salem coming to bat in the home half.

Salem doesn't score so it's on to the 13th. And Matt Gedman (yes, Matt Gedman) is relieving Nate Reed on the mound. Jantzen Witte takes over at 1st base.

Holy crap.

Aaron McFarling ‏@aaronmcfarling 2m
Gedman's first pitch checks in at a crisp 71 mph. Brought the heat at 74 on pitch No. 2.

Aaron McFarling ‏@aaronmcfarling 1m
Haha. Gedman fans first batter he faces with a pitch so slow it doesn't register on gun. This is great.

Aaron McFarling ‏@aaronmcfarling 51s
Carving! Gedman whiffs another! Two up, two down for Gedman, both on some sort of loopy, raunchy breaking ball.

Aaron McFarling ‏@aaronmcfarling 23s
Are you not entertained???? That's a Chris Davis-like performance out of @Gedzilla8. Three up, three down.

:rolling:

(I promised Fris I'd back off the Twitter posts in here, but I had to make an exception because McFarling is just hilarious).

Matty Johnson doubles with 2 outs in the b-13th, but he's stranded there as Carlos Asuaje pops out. On to the 14th.

EDIT - Oh well...

Aaron McFarling ‏@aaronmcfarling 6m
*Sad trombone* Gedman gives up a dong. You can only throw 72-mph gas on an uphill plane for so long, I guess. Fun times anyway.

That homer by Joe Odom came with 1 out, but Geddy got the next two to retire the side.

Salem's last ups trailing 2-1.

What's Kukuk's FB velocity? Is he getting these strikeouts from overpowering hitters or from something else?

This is a blurb Speier wrote about him in May:

Left-hander Cody Kukuk had his best start since his promotion to High-A Salem. The 21-year-old logged six innings in which he permitted two runs (one earned) on five hits (four singles and a double) while punching out five and walking one. He achieved highs in innings and strikeouts, while the start represented the first in which he walked fewer than three batters. In his four starts in Salem, Kukuk has a 2.55 ERA; opponents have hit just .200 against him with a .215 slugging mark that reflects the fact that he’s yielded just one extra-base hit (a double). Walks have been an issue (13 in 17 2/3 innings), but Kukuk — armed with a mid-90s fastball, swing-and-miss slider and changeup — continues to show the raw materials of a potential impact arm.

Looks like his last 30 something innings have been a total contrast to his first 30 something innings in Salem. Promising development, especially the Ks.
