Zack Wheeler vs. Jordan Montgomery in the 4:05 p.m. opener in Philly. Yanks are the home team. Seven innings! Then at 7:05 comes the nightcap. Philly sends its ace, Aaron Nola, against TBD. This would be a great time to bring up Clark Schmidt from Scranton. But that seems unlikely.

Yanks have won seven in a row. And I am on the road today to Penn State. If Yanks lose opener, we need someone to start the Game 2 thread. If they win the opener, let’s keep the karma going by continuing this thread for the entire doubleheader.

In honor of my new book, “We Had Ink In Our Blood,” I just want to say, “The 2020 Yanks Have Winning In Their Blood.”

You're a real pro, Terry, hope the trip and signing go great.

Since the start of 2019:

Manny Machado (born July 1992): 711 PAs, 2.8 bWAR
Gio Urshela (born October 1991): 511 PAs, 4.2 bWAR

I learned the game thread etiquette from you, Jon. It’s all about karma, good hitting, pitching and fielding!

Congrats on the book, that’s fantastic. Wish you some safe travels as well. Going by the quality you consistently exhibit here, have to believe the book further exemplifies your excellent writing.

If the rest of the season happens, the Phillies are playing 57 games in 56 days. Last to do that was the 1998 Yankees. We all know what happened there. For Philadelphia, it was 1983. Not quite as renowned a club, but they were also a pennant winning team.

It’s a great day for a game. Let’s take two!

57 games in 56 days for PHI was actually before Monday, so now they’re at 56 games in 54 days from here.

Congrats on the book, Terry!
Here's a question for you guys, perhaps belong elsewhere, but:
Say, hypothetically, the latter 7-inning game is rained out. How many innings would a starting pitcher have had to pitch to get a win?

I don't understand the question, if it's rained out, there's no game. Is your question 'if it starts raining mid-game, how many innings do they have to play for it to be an oficial game, 4 or 5?' I assume the answer is still 5, like a normal game, and same for SPs to get a W.

I will be watching (first game is on FS1) but no matter how slowly they are turning up the heat, this frog has had enough. There is only so much violence you can do to the game before it is no longer valid as baseball and 7 innings games are not and never will be MLB baseball. I barely tolerated the actual artificial placing of baserunners to shorten games. What's next ? Why not a clock (the ultimate insult) and whoever is leading wins and we all just stop ? They have no respect for the game, only their need for cashflow to justify their huge leveraged investments in these particular tulip bulbs.

Congrats! Is there a place to purchase from that you see the biggest impact?

Looks like Happ vs Wheeler in game 1, Nola vs a bullpen game in game 2. Not sure why Montgomery is being held back.

Just coming here to post that, with a lefty starter, no less. If I were a betting man (I’m not), big bucks on PHI to win game 1.

I kind of feel bad for Happ. Weaker offensive lineup than usual, but not in a way that at least gives him better defense behind him.

I know they want to keep his innings down, but damn. :D

Edit: Now that I made that joke, watch him go 7 inning CG.

Nah, Yanks don't lose. They take both.

They should just cancel the rest of the season and the playoffs and just let the Yankees and Dodgers play in the World Series so that a champ can be locked in.

This is madness and should be bannable.

Gift run from Angel Hernandez in the 1st, Hicks had two pitches called balls that were strikes.

I'm in a bad mood. But Happ versus Gray versus Lynn? Who to retain? Institutional failure.

I edited, btw. Originally said "Who to resign?" Just pissed and wanted to adjust for historical accuracy.

No one argued this at the time, but yes, NY hired new pitching coaches since then and this had a lot to do with it.

I actually have much more faith in our current pitching coaches. But could you imagine a staff of Cole, Lynn, Gray, Tanaka, and Paxton?

People say Gray has thrived because he's working with his old college coach. I've mentioned this before, but we should pay for every player to have their individual coaches.

I am happy with Montgomery and am excited to see Schmidt soon. The Yankees are literally the most loaded throughout their organization in the 40+ years since I've been following them, I find it hilarious that people are still second-guessing old moves (not just you).

Also he is close to home and has his college catcher, but it's far from clear that even all that would have allowed him to thrive in NY.

Fair enough. I still think throwing in another $300k or whatever would be worth the investment.

Their rotation next year should be Cole, Severino, German, Montgomery and Schmidt, I'm happy with that.

Terrible baserunning by Higgy, WTF are you doing?

I tend to be less optimistic about Tommy John recovery for Severino. A lot of people seem to think of it as a cureall but it's not. It's better for younger people like Sevy, at least.
