I can't believe he didn't swing at that 2-0.
[/QUOTE]

Since he basically swings at everything. Weak.

They still have to pay Pablo's $5M buyout, which counts on next year's cap.
OK....Sandoval .$18M down to $5M

Porcello -20M
Sandoval -13M
Nunez -5M
Pearce -6M
Moreland -6M
Leon -2.5M

Thats about $53M coming off the books...$58M if Sandovals buyout doesn't count

Sale +16M
X +8M
Mookie +6M (last year of arb)
JBJ +4M (swag 3/36)
Barnes +4M
Workman +4M (another arb year?)

that leaves about $11M-16MM for a backup catcher and bullpen depth

Who is missing??

Tough to call out Mookie for an .885 OPS but it just seems like there are too many pitches this year that would have been ropes last year that have been pop-ups this year.

A 5th starter, and a 4th starter?

Leon gets another arb year, so no need for a backup catcher in Dave's mind.
BROCKHOLT is a FA.
Eduardo and Benny should get nice raises in arb
Cashner's $10M option probably declined at this point.

I was assuming Cashner as the 5th, but should then I probably need to add his $10M...completely forgot Edro and Benny. If Marco replaces Brock as the U player that frees up another $3.5M but if they are going to add bullpen depth it seems doubtful that JBJ is resigned unless some other salary is getting traded

I guess if they don't pick up Cashner they could maybe resign JBJ but then need an SP5

Aren't option buyouts guaranteed so they're included in all the previous season's AAVs, and if the team chooses to take the option doesn't the buyout just get removed from that season's AAV?

You know, it’s really easy to play with energy when things are going well. Not so easy when everything looks like it’s turning to shit.

This team seems to be allergic to adversity. They’re like the human incarnation of a SoSH game thread.

Perhaps we'll find out about some mild injuries to the staff? To some of the starting 9? Things teams like to keep secret? That's one of many possible explanations.

Depending how things go the next year or two, maybe 2018 will be the mystery.
2018 will go down, as it should, as a total outlier. No team, no matter what, should be expected to win 108 games, and then go 11-3 in the playoffs. I think this team's true level is about 95-98 wins. A ton went right for them last year and they ballooned up to 108 wins, a truly historic feat. This year, not a lot has gone right, and they're looking at 85 wins or so. So something in-between last year and this year is about right. Nothing wrong with a 95 win team that has a shot in the playoffs. We should relish what happened last season, be bummed about this one, and hope for 95 wins moving forward.

JDM could opt out.
