Ball's final line = five runs, four earned, on five hits and five walks with three strikeouts in 5.1 innings pitched.  Other than the walks, he might have pitched better than his line as first three innings he reached the minimum (with a pickoff), but according to this article - http://augustafreepress.com/crooked-numbers-push-frederick-keys-past-salem-red-sox-8-4/ - the fourth went:

Ball ran into trouble in the fourth, though, as the first four Frederick batters reached base. Tanner Witt walked, Chance Sisco singled, Jeff Kemp walked then Yaisel Mederos bounced an infield single to the right side. Mario Martinez fielded the grounder and tried to throw across his body to Ball covering at first base, missing wide. Witt scored on the single and Sisco followed on the throwing error, making it 2-0.
Wynston Sawyer lifted a sacrifice fly in the next at bat, deep enough to score Kemp from third base. Connor Bierfeldt followed with an RBI double, scoring Mederos and pushing to Frederick lead to 4.

Ball had a clean fifth but he left after walking a batter in the sixth, who came around to score.

BALL IS A BUST! I can't believe he gave up a single to that guy! He'll never amount to anything!

Bill Lee and Bruce Hurst were both 23 when they made their debuts. Randy Johnson made his ML debut right around his 25th birthday. Not everybody rockets through the system, but sometimes the guys who need time are awesome anyway.

I like that he is working on a slider early, giving him four pitches to work with/on before AA. For comparison Owens didn't learn a fourth (also a slider) until AAA.

P91 probably also looked at the box score of the sox game and said Owens start was depressing. 5 innings and he gave up 3 runs!!!

Exactly. Work on evolving your body, command, repertoire and confidence. It's a short trip to the show once you get yourself sorted out. Results are of limited value along the way.

Then again, when Owens was Ball's age he put up a 2.69 ERA at Salem and Portland, striking out 169 batters in 135 IP along the way.

He was doing just fine w/o his 4th pitch.

They don't, of course. I was simply adding color to someone else's comparison of the two. But that should have been obvious if you read the thread.

Trey Ball has been a disappointment. He's too young to call him a bust but saying it's been depressing is accurate.
