Jeison Payano got the start for DSL Red today. They're up 1-0 in the 3rd in the final game of the DSL season.

Payano pitched 3 scoreless, hitless innings with 3 walks & 4 k.

Greider Colina came in next & pitched 1.2 innings, also hitless, with 2 walks, 2 hbp & 1 k.

Juan Henriquez came in with 2 on & 2 outs in the 5th & got a line out to end the inning.

Red Sox Red up 1-0 headed to the bottom of the 5th.

That's four potential prospects to protect in the Rule 5 draft. That list is here; I'd protect Fitts (most likely in my opinion), Dobbins, and YORDANNY (copyright @JM3) even though he's far away. Perhaps some other prospect watchers disagree.
YORDANNY ❤

Who would you protect if you had four available spots?
I would make more spots & clear out more deadwood. Kidding. Mostly. They actually did do a good job clearing out that glut... too bad they didn't get much of use in return.

My personal order would be like...

YORDANNY
Guerrero
Fitts
Dobbins

Blaze
Castro
Jhostynxon
Liu
Hickey
Bonnin

I think they'd be able to trade Fitts or Dobbins for some value rather than letting them walk, though. But yeah, 4 spots should be plenty.

He signed a 2-year MiLB deal.

It may include an opt-out or something, but I feel like once a player has been added to a 40-man roster once, he has to clear waivers to be taken back off of it so I feel like Rule 5 would no longer apply, but Minor League free agency would?

Tried to find it in the CBA, but wasn't having much luck on my phone because I couldn't search the document & lacked patience.

5-0 in the 8th. Juan Henriquez pitched 2.2 innings & left with a runner on 1st & 1 out.

Gilbel Galvan came in & immediately picked up an inning-ending GIDP.

I forgot to mention that Henriquez (no known relationship to Hen-ri-KAY) allowed their 1st 2 hits of the game.

Galvan pitched a scoreless 9th & secured the shutout, a 6-0 victory & the DSL Championship, though

Picking up a shutout while walking 7 batters & hitting 3 is impressive...

Justin Gonzales 4-5, 2b
Anderson Fermin 3-5, sb
Edwin Brito 1-1, 2 bb, sf

I agree on Dobbins, Fitts and Guerrero. I would also lean toward the two OFs who recently went to Portland, in Castro and Garcia, but that’s mostly because I think more room will be made on the 40 by doing some deals and letting some older guys walk.

I am probably lower on Castro & Jhostynxon than most, but I think they are too far away from being useful, & lack a high enough ceiling, for a team to consider poaching them in an R5, & we will need those roster spots for the reliever carousel, MCATM, etc.

SSS obviously, but in Portland Castro has a 42 wRC+ in 70 PAs & Jhostynxon has a 92 in 70 PAs (1.4% bb rate).

Neither provides significant defensive or base running upside either, which is normally the way a rawer R5 hitter provides value.

Danny Kirwin is now listed as the starter for Salem on GameDay.

Haven't been able to take advantage of the WooSox on free game of the day, but it looks like they haven't been either.

Losing 4-0 in the 5th. Westbrook has their only hit & Meidroth has their only walk.

Kirwin allowed 6 runs, 4 earned in 2.2 IP... some really good relief pitching, though...

Griffin Kilander - 2.1 perfect innings, 3 k

Nicholas Judice - 2 IP, hit a guy, 3 k

Calvin Bickerstaff - 1-2-3 inning with a k

So Salem's bullpen:

5.1 IP, 0 runs, 0 hits, 0 bb, 1 hbp, 7 k

They still lost 6-1, though.

Nazzan 1-3, 2b, sb, 2 k
Diaz 1-3, 2b
Yute 1-3, bb
Rose/Lugo 1-4

This is going to take some time
Someone suggested The Glue the other day. & I was kicking around elm tree ideas but didn't find anything I liked.

It's a process.

I thought I had something with El Mer for a second but then I remembered that el is Spanish & mer is French.

Calling him The Sea would be even more ironic considering he got off the Cruz.

This was my post on Cellucci from 8/22.

He's allowed 2 ER in his last 24.2 IP (0.73 ERA), 17 hits, 8 bb, 36 k (13.1 k/9).
Since then he's pitched 5 more scoreless innings (1 hit, 5 bb, 5 k) so 2 ER on 29.2 IP (0.61 ERA), 18 hits, 13 bb (3.9 bb/9), 41 k (12.4 k/9).

We're going to have to keep workshopping this a bit
Yeah, we're definitely not there yet.

That reminds me, if you exclude CT's 1st 8 games or so (8.2 IP, 11 ER, 10 hits, 10 bb, 10 k), which included a month+ development list stretch, he's had a pretty good season:

18 games, 32.2 IP, 10 ER, 22 hits, 19 bb, 45 k

2.76 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 5.2 bb/9, 12.4 k/9

You are likely right, but those guys are likely to have another month to settle in, and I may still be in the old rule 5 hijinks mindset, where you can IL a guy most of the year and spread the time across the whole season, including September when rosters used to expand further.
Thats less the case (Noah Song more the exception now), as teams use their whole roster much differently.

Going to see if my impression of who gets drafted has been correct...

2023
8 of 10 drafted players were pitchers including Slaten, Drohan & Fernandez

The 2 hitters drafted were:

Nasim Nuñez - The 24 y/o IF was the 46th overall pick by the Marlins in 2019. Nuñez played in 35 games in AA in '22 & spent the entire season there in '23, putting up a 79 wRC+ in 485 PAs, 14% bb, 19% k, 52 steals (7 cs).

Nuñez played 95 games at SS & 29 at 2B. He was the MVP of the '23 Futures Game & played in the Arizona Fall League.

I believe Nuñez has been active all season for the Nationals. He has 34 PAs in 34 games (102 wRC+). In 16 of those games, he came in as a pinch runner. He has played 81 innings of defense, 79 at SS & 2 at 2B.

He picked up his 1st MLB RBI earlier this week.

He has 96th percentile sprint speed.

That went on way longer than I anticipated... will cover the other hitter drafted in another post lol
