Why did they use that angle?

Why did we have a full minute or more delay to check for a red card?

Why are Arsenal fans so in love with Torreira but he never seems to play?

Pepe and PEA probably should each have a goal apiece right now.

Emery played a hand, not sure he had many better options. If Pepe buries his break away to go up 1-0, then things might have played out differently.

Trying to sit deep and compact while isolating Matip & VVD against Pepe & PEA on long balls is a decent attack strategy that circumvents the gengenpress. But Arsenal has no wide threat - not even a whiff of intent - to slow down TAA & Robertson. Those two ran riot in the Arsenal half and pulled open the space for Salah & Friends to drive into.

My man Bobby put the clamps on Ceballos today. Ceballos was dropping deep to defend, but when he didn’t get on the ball, there was really no threat or progress. No forward plays both ways as well as Firmino. He’s one of a kind.

Excellent win for Liverpool. Keep this train rolling. City won’t drop many points this year. The race will be just as intense as last season.

City are good.

But goddamn, Harry Wilson is a sniper from distance. Wonderful free kick.

No team tactically fouls in the midfield like City. They've raised it to a skill. I wish refs were quicker to brandish the yellow for it, though, so we could see more counter opportunities and maybe, just maybe, some vulnerability.

Edit: Jefferson Lerma does not tactically foul with skill.

The tactical foul stuff is overblown. All teams do it and Bournemouth, like many teams, fell over at any and all contact because it’s a break and possession. City absolutely are willing to foul immediately to try to win the ball but there’s no dark art here.

I would like to file my weekly lament that VAR sucks, this time choosing not to call a pen for a foul on David Silva. It’s only problematic for me because these are the technical calls they’ve been making via VAR. it continues to be a mess and a net negative

Finally, I am watching Spurs play the Netherlands and the Dutch look like shit

It’s almost like Jan Vertonghen is better than Davinson Sanchez and should be playing over him.

I dunno, it was bad of Sanchez to have his spacing wrong and then miss the header but why was Alderweireld so far from his partner. They basically conspired to leave the space for the striker to sit in

Not everything is a slight. I said City have raised tactical fouling to a skill and wished refs would issue cards for it more quickly to open up matches. But I know it’s very important for City fans to point out how their side is no different than every other team, it’s all perfectly even and on the level...

Newcastle’s back four is keeping them alive, Spurs would have a couple goals against a lesser group.

A very blah half from Spurs: 77% possession but only 3 shots. This game is really exposing that Lamela is not a true #10. Spurs are relying on him to create opportunities for the three forwards and he's just not up to it: he doesn't have the first touch/vision/range of passing in tight spaces.

Newcastle are funneling everything wide and daring Spurs to cross, where they have 3 CBs waiting. The crosses from the FBs have been too slow, too many touches allowing the defense to get set. They need to move the ball more quickly.

A terrible breakdown from Sanchez on the goal, no idea what he was thinking.

They could def use Eriksen/Lo Celso as subs.

Steve Bruce’s tactical vision executed to a T. Fun start to the league generally—everyone up to 6th is a point off the drop.

So, did you guys see the final play of the Wolves-Burnley game? I was rooting for Wolves but even so, I'm not sure about it.

Looked like both players going for the ball there without it being dangerous to the other, and Jimenez made a meal of it.
Oof. Contrast that to Lascelles/Kane and I see why folks are confused with what VAR is achieving?!

VAR is not going to be successful if the FA is terrified of overruling on-field decisions. Right now it's basically:

"Eesh, that looked questionable... yeah that's 95% the wrong call... so I guess the decision stands."
