Dalvinson actually allowed runs for the 1st time (2 in 2.2 IP)...kind of. He left with 2 out & 2 on in the 3rd & Yermain Ruiz let them both score.

But DSL Red is up 12-5 in the 8th.

Red added RHP Gilbel Galvan from Blue for the playoffs.

After Coffey, Liam Hendriks came in for 3 hitters - infield single, line out, walk.

Brendan Cellucci came in & induced an inning ending GIDP, & for good measure pitched 3 more scoreless innings afterward to secure the 3-1 victory.

He's allowed 2 ER in his last 24.2 IP (0.73 ERA), 17 hits, 8 bb, 36 k (13.1 k/9).

Jhostynxon 2-4, hr
Marrero 2-4, 2b, sb
Castro 1-2, 2b, bb, sf
Rosier 0-1, 3 bb, sb

JWY allowed 2 ER in 1.2 IP. Maybe some BABIP issues? Hitters were 4-4 on him when he didn't strike them out (5 k).
I was at the game. His stuff looked a notch above any of the other pitchers coming out of his hand, but he gave up the hardest contact (excluding people pitching to Bleis). It seemed like LHH had a much harder time against him than RHH.

Bleis is clearly a different class at the plate than everyone else. He's just a little strength shy of putting a bunch of hard hit balls off or over the wall. His third (I think) PA was really nice. He fought off a bunch of pitches from a guy with a weird delivery until he found one to square up for a loud out. He wasn't given much to do in center though.

Fraymi made a bunch of plays, but also had a bunch of mental lapses. He's young and probably just needs more experience. He looks like a good athlete and I think he could be a MLB utility type.

I can't find anything on Isaac Coffey on Sox Prospects? I guess he is older, he just turned 24, for AA

BUT what's the story besides Ks & Ws?

Thanks for all the work you do here
I'm not JM3 but the issue with Coffey is he throws 89-91 mph from a side arm angle. He's an effective minor league pitcher but no one really thinks he will be an effective mlb pitcher with those characteristics.

I've seen two of starts this summer including last night from the front row. I'd say that assessment of him being an effective AA pitcher but limited big league stuff is fairly accurate. On the upside he doesn't seem to let the game get away from him when he's in a jam.

Yeah...I think I've always been a bit higher on guys like Coffey & Paez than SP because I think the ability to get people out while not pitching that hard is a nice baseline, especially if they can add a few mph along the way.

It's easier to think that for a 20 y/o like Paez than a 24 y/o like Coffey, but you also don't need to throw as hard when you're deceiving hitters. Take Cooper Criswell & his 89.1 mph fastball for example. A primary differentiator with him is he's 5 inches taller than Coffey, so Coffey isn't going to be able to get away with sitting in that range, which is where he was last year...

Mostly just posting this because I think it's a good angle to show the potential for deceptiveness. I believe he's up to 91 or 92 now, although I can't find that info at the moment, but if he can add a couple more mph & tighten up some things? Maybe?

Regardless, it feels like he has already earned his $7,500 signing bonus that was instrumental in clearing enough space to bring in Roman Anthony.

The other 2 guys who they had sign for $7,500 are also in AA - Caleb Bolden & Jonathan Brand.

Here's one last view of Coffey from this Spring.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if he ends up being an up & down swing guy or can add some velo in a relief role & carve out a niche. I also wouldn't be surprised if he never finds success in AAA.

Thanks guys. 90 mph fastball has me sweating already.

I think the ability to get people out while not pitching that hard is a nice baseline, especially if they can add a few mph along the way.

That's an interesting POV, since Paez/Coffey probably get more mileage out of 1-2 extra MPHs (bad pun alert)

My favorite all-time Sox closer was Koji, so movement/deception can be effective if the velo is below average

I always take stadium radar guns with a huge grain of salt. That said, last night Coffey was at 91mph most of the night.

The thing that gives you pause, outside of the stuff, is that there are no real comps in MLB. Every once in a while some weirdo like this breaks through and is effective, but I'd rather be happy if it happens than forecast it happening, if that makes any sense

Don't like the "shorter Cooper Criswell" comp? lol

For comparison purposes here's Criswell v. Coffey in their age 24 seasons at AA...

IP 70.1 IP/97
ERA 3.95/3.34
WHIP 1.08/1.26
BB/9 1.0/4.1
K/9 10.9/11.4

Criswell pitched 47 innings in AAA that year, too, with a 6.51 ERA.

Short Criswell with less control? The interesting thing, to me, about the walks is that Coffey was at 1.5 per 9 last year in Greenville, so the ability to throw strikes seems to be there.

Idk. He's definitely wayyyy less exciting than a lot of other guys & is not worth counting on in any way. But I'm also not willing to write him off, yet.

"Short Criswell" makes me wonder what Coffey's extension is. Cooper's is quite good at 6.8'/77th percentile. I'm guessing Coffey can't match that, but do we have any idea what his is?

I'm sure the Red Sox have internal data, but I'm not privy to it & didn't see anything on quick search.

He's only 6'1, though.

That's kinda where I think the comp is problematic. Criswell's fastball plays up bc of where he releases it. Coffey's weird release doesn't scream extension to me. I think maybe he could be a somewhat effective swing guy in the right situation.
