Aaron,

I think we're going to have to get past the issue of umpires being unable to call a strike zone appropriate for a giant among men. Just trust what you see and stay within the zone. Don't worry about what you can't control.

All of that is a polite way to say that the team can't afford for you to go through a prolonged slump. You've struck out 11 times in the last five games. That is some last-year kinda bullshit. Got no time for that. You are a leader on this team and those guys look up to you. Sure, most of them have no choice, but regardless, there is work that needs to be done. So get to it.

Cordially,

EE

PS: Go bulldogs!

Hopefully DJ and Brett both back for this one, that will be a double boost of energy.

Split the series and the Sox would be 5-6 over their most important stretch of the season so far. Unless the Sox sweep, they don't really hurt us. For the Yankees, this series is more about getting back in a groove than it is fending off the Sox. We've been playing tired but it looks like the pitching has turned a corner and the offense came alive in the last game.

That’s pretty much where I’m at. Playing tired. Torres, Hicks, Judge, Voit before he got hurt. Starting pitchers. Tired.

As Abbey notes, DJ and Gardner should be in the lineup tonight. They may show us tonight how much both mean to this team by working counts and getting on base.

NY’s best defensive infield and outfield will be out there. Torres has to sharpen up his effort, both at the plate and in the field. These are minor fixes to a team that has played well most of the season, just not lately.

They are 5-5 now so they'd be 7-7 then, they just played TB/NY/TB:

2-1 @TB
3-1 NY
0-3 TB

Is Tampa legit yet? Are they the real contenders for the East title, this team that made three minor yet important moves at the trade deadline?

Boston is running out of time, and the Yankees have their own problems, but the Rays just added two offensive components and another bullpen arm. Sogard was born to play for Tampa.

The last time Paxton faced these guys he gave up 7 ER in 4 IP, an improvement here would be appreciated. He also struckout 9 and more of that would be nice.

It's August and the Sox are exactly the same team they've been all year. Inconsistent. They had 2 MVP candidates, Sale having a Cy Young year, and Kimbrel in 2018. Add that to magic dust that was sprinkled on Eovaldi and Pearce. Devers' amazing year and a few homeruns by Chavis isn't filling the regression gap.

I'm not shitting on the Red Sox, it's just a reality check. They are an amazing team who doesn't have the depth to make up for some mediocre years. Very dangerous in the postseason but meh right now.

Gardner officially off the DL (although he has terrible L/R splits so this is not a great series for him), Wade back to AAA. Also Happ on the paternity list, Tarpley back.

I know this is obliquely addressed to Semper but don't forget they just lost Snell for a while too. They were never not legit but they were more legit with both Glasnow and Snell in the rotation.

I'm excited to see Tarpley against this lineup.

Don't save this post, in case I have to eat it.

Kinda sorta bummed to see Tauchman on the bench. He's pretty much an every day player as long as he's hitting like this.

I think Tauchman should be playing too, but with 4 games in like 51 hours, everyone's going to get to play a lot this series.

They’re so legit that they get Fridays off now.

They did a nice little bit of business at the deadline, but they have an uphill climb against the injuries. The biggest help they’re getting now is a really easy August schedule. If they manage to grab a WC and all the wounded come back in time for October, though, who knows?

That’s how I define legit — are they a threat in October? I have felt all along pitching and timely hitting make Tampa a tough team to play.

Not disagreeing with you, but isn't their bullpen amazing? One guy after another is deceptive in a different way. I'm so jealous.

Boston’s lineup 1-5 is batting something like .400 over the past week with Benientendi a scorching .500. Let’s hope Paxton gets through okay the first time through the order.

They hsve not looked good against NY, it's been a strange season between the top three AL East teams so far. TB can't beat BOS at home, BOS can't beat TB at home, NY won the first six against BOS and lost the next four, and NY has had TB's number all season.

Red Sox crying about ump not calling low strikes. Same thing happened on a 2-1 pitch to Boegarts that was called a ball. This is the ump’s strike zone.

Gleyber has had a bunch of terrible first pitch outs lately. I like that better.

Paxton mixing pitches quite a bit more this time out. Can't just throw fastballs these days.

Quite the AB from Romine. If he keeps this up it'll be hard to keep him as a backup.

It’s kind of funny how Cone described the Green Monster as having a “heart beat”, and how it’s felt on the mound when trying to rationalize Paxton’s last outing there.
