Rough performance from Sandlin.

2.2 IP, 5 runs, 2 ER, 7 hits, 1 hra, 1 bb, 4 k

Christopher Troye came in & struck a hitter out to get out of the 3rd & strand 2 runners.

Might we get DH Mayer today? Time shall tell.

1:05 p.m.: AA - Portland (Sandlin) @ Binghamton

1:05 p.m.: AAA - Lehigh Valley @ Worcester (Alexander)

1:35 a.m.: A - Salem (Valera) @ Fredericksburg

2:05 p.m.: A+ - Greenville (Rogers) @ Aberdeen

Even if we don't get AAA Mayer today, Sandlin & Valera is a pretty good consolation prize.
Anyone else getting kind of concerned with Mayer’s injury history? Seems pretty extensive at this point.

He's been our biggest pitching disappointment this year, hasn't he? I really don't understand his struggles given his stuff plus command
I think Wikelman is the biggest disappointment…. But JM3 did show some good developments on his last several starts at least. But a big drop in SP ranking

I think Sandlin has probably been the biggest ERA disappointment among our starting pitching prospects...but in terms of underlying #s & scouting perception I think he's right on track.

He had an injury setback with Greenville & until someone actually regularly puts up really good actual results I think there always has to be some reasonable trepidation... especially when it comes to the astronomical home run rates, but here are the stats this season:

Greenville - 5.12 ERA, 2.88 xFIP, 3.1 bb/9, 14.2 k/9 (.364 BABIP, 20.6% hr/fb)

Portland - 4.50 ERA, 2.62 xFIP, 0.8 bb/9, 12 k/9 (.269 BABIP, 26.7% hr/fb)

Sandlin is 23 until February & seems to be on a pretty good path... they just need to sort through some of the noise & see if it's bad luck or if there is something else they can do to limit the hard contact, but the stuff definitely plays & I don't think they will be necessarily disappointed with his progress this season.

Pretty much top to bottom, except for injury, all the guys who were guys before the season have met or exceeded expectations. Besides Sandlin the other candidates are probably Wikelman (as previously discussed who is hopefully turning a corner) & Richard Fitts who may hopefully be doing the same.

Fitts 1st 17 games: 78 IP, 4.96 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, 3.7 bb/9, 8.3 k/9

Last 4 games: 22 IP, 2.45 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 1.2 bb/9, 8.6 k/9

On the season he has a 4.42 ERA & 4.81 xFIP, so on the whole I'm more down on him. He's also over a year older than Sandlin. International League launchpad & robo ump caveats do apply, though.

Sandlin's biggest issue has been gopher balls. 12 home run in 45 innings would make even Giolito and Crawford blush.

I would also add that pitchers might be working on secondary pitches for a stretch leading to their getting hit harder. I wish there was a way to assess this – maybe there is but I’m not aware – as I have long wondered if pitcher struggles that suddenly pop up with good prospects might just be their tweaking a 3rd pitch for example.

On the bright side, Valera won't get the loss. Those runs came after 22 scoreless innings.

He walked a many hitters today in 1.1 IP (5) as he did in the 1st 21 innings of his streak.

Salem lost 11-9 after deciding that Francis Hernandez & Luis Talavera was an acceptable way to finish the game.

Nelly T 3-5, 3b, 2b
Arias 3-5
Feliz 1-5, hr
AA 2-4
Brannon 1-4, sb

Nazzan made his 1st start of the year at 2B & was 0-4 with a hbp & 3 k... no errors, though!

Greenville lost 6-3. They did get a nice Bryce Bonnin Ribeye outting - 2.1 scoreless, 1 hit, 3 k. Bonnin is 25 & a Kyle Boddy favorite. Feels like it's about time to move him to Portland. Maybe Max Carlson to Greenville in a corresponding move?

ROMAN 2-3, 2b, 2 bb
Heineman 2-2, 2 bb, sb
Dalbec 1-3, 3b, 3 rbi
Guthrie 2-4, 2b
Westbrook 2-4
Alvarez 1-4, 2b
Teel 1-4

Meidroth came out in the 5th after going 0-1 with a walk & Grissom came in & went 0-2 with a hbp.

Not sure if it was due to a failed game of Twister.

Randomly when I went to the Red Sox Player Development account just now, these 2 posts were next to each other...
