That was closer than it should have been but once again, lotsa homers vs the orioles.

Enough has been written about Mike Tauchman. Or maybe not enough because defensively and offensively, he’s been a dream outfielder. Hard contact, power, and just strong numbers all around.

In the spirit of comparing a potential off-season acquisition to what we got instead...

Tauchman - .300 Avg, 12hr, .960ops, and 56k in 190AB (3.3 WAR per bRef)
Harper - .250 avg, 22hr, .844ops, and 120k in 424ab (1.9 WAR per bRef)

Unfortunately Tauchman sits game 2, along with Sanchez and Didi.

1. DJ LeMahieu (R) 3B
2. Aaron Judge (R) RF
3. Gio Urshela (R) DH
4. Gleyber Torres (R) SS
5. Brett Gardner (L) CF
6. Cameron Maybin (R) LF
7. Austin Romine (R) C
8. Mike Ford (L) 1B
9. Breyvic Valera (S) 2B

You'd think for a guy competing for playing time, Valera would be a bit more focused. Didn't he forget how many outs there were the other day?

It’s 4-3 now as the Orioles score multiple runs off Joe Mantiply, who is making his one and only appearance in Yankee pinstripes tonight.

Mantiply returns to pitch the fourth. And he gets an out. Now two outs.

"Joe Mantiply is being followed by Brady Lail. #Yankees don’t even do this when they’re playing at home in the Grapefruit League."

More baserunning stupidity from Valera, make him make the throw. I hope Thairo and Loaisiga are back tomorrow, send down Valera and Lail and DFA Mantiply.

I just had a bizarre moment during that Gio AB where I looked up and thought he was Melky. It wasn't a closeup, in my defense.

Paul O'Neill just went into BAL's booth to visit Gary Thorne after that, have not seen that before.

Apparently O'Neill just went into the MASN booth and teased them about Gleyber? What was that like from the YES side?

It's going to be amazing if NY catches MIN in team HRs with all of the sluggers they've had out, they were 18 back coming into today and I think have 7 so far in the doubleheader.

Meanwhile TOR has 15 runs in the first 5 innings tonight against TEX, further emphasizing how impressive Tanaka was yesterday.

That was the fattest pitch a hitter could ever want to see. Buck Showalter must be so happy he’s no longer managing the O’s.

Gleyber has broken the record for HRs against a single opponent in one season in the divisional era, all of these others had more games.

MLB Most HR in Season vs Opponent

14 Lou Gehrig 1936 NYY vs CLE
13 Jimmie Foxx 1932 PHA vs DET
13 Hank Sauer 1954 CHC vs PIT
13 Joe Adcock 1956 MIL vs BKN
13 Roger Maris 1961 NYY vs CHW
13 Gleyber Torres 2019 NYY vs BAL

"At 22 years, 242 days, Gleyber Torres is the youngest player in AL history to record eight career multi-HR games. He is the fourth-youngest in Major League history to do so: NYG's Mel Ott (21y, 182d), BSN/MLN’s Eddie Mathews (22y, 182d) and ATL's Andruw Jones (22y, 84d)."

6 hits for Gio today including by far the longest HR of his career, that's a good day's work.

MLB ought to put an asterisk next to every HR record set this year.

Maybe, although some of those were last year and plenty of other young studs get to play this year also. Maybe two asterisks, one for the Orioles also? :)
