With less than 30 games left in Greenville's season, it seems strange they have not moved Benintendi up at this point.  He's 3rd in the NYPL in OPS; given Bregman/Fulmer are in A+, and Tyler Jay and Ian Happ are in A-, it's looking a bit conservative to have Benny still in short-season ball.

I have a guess that they want to get him in as many games as possible... and it is slightly more likely that Lowell will make the playoffs than the Drive will. They also may not believe the competition in the SALLY league is significantly different than the NYPL, so there is no great reason to bump him. Where he begins next season will show if the Red Sox are being conservative or not. This year is just about getting at bats and improving.

I find it hard to believe he wouldn't benefit from a promotion at this point. The SoxProspects podcast from last week (who saw him in person a few times) opined that he's simply going to the plate and trying to hit HRs because the competition isn't good enough, as evidenced by a 17.6% BB rate and 15% pop-up rate, which is somewhat leading to his reduced BABIP. If they plan on starting him in Salem next year, why not let him get 15-20 games at that level under his belt, so even if he slumps a bit it's not a huge deal?

As noted above, definitely not unprecedented for top-10 picks to be in A+.  Given his complete and utter mastery of short season pitching thus far, it might be good to push him aggressively and see how he handles it.  Maybe a little failure in Salem would remind him that he's got a lot to work on going into the offseason.  Not to say that dominating in 50 games at Lowell will make him think he's Mike Trout Jr. but a bit more of a challenge definitely seems warranted at this point.  I believe Keith Law actually said he's surprised that Benintendi was in the NYPL to begin with and should be in A- or even A+.

Regardless, so long as he is in Salem to start next year I don't think it makes much of a difference to anyone but us fanboys.  Even if he went up to Salem tomorrow and then dominated for 25 games, it's unlikely they start him anywhere but back in Salem in 2016.

In non-Benny news, Luis Alexander Basabe launched his 7th HR and also had a walk in the game.  He's struck out at an alarming rate but also walked in 11% of his PAs, stolen 13 bases and now hit 7 HRs at the age of 18 in Lowell.  Clearly pretty raw but if he can get that contact rate up a bit, the rest of the tools seem to be there.

Finishes the game 3-5 with a single and 2 bombs.  That brings Benintendi up to .279/.403/.548 in case anyone was wondering

I'm kicking myself now for not going to the game - it's only 15 min from my work and was on my "schedule" until I saw who the (uninteresting) Spinner's starting pitcher was. At any rate, it seems like there's a pretty good sized SOSH contingent in this area based on the above posts and participation in other Bruno stadium Spinner game threads

Random thoughts,

So if Benintendi comes as quickly as it seems likely, how do the Red Sox maximize the value of Benintendi, Margot, Betts, Bradley, and Castillo?

Sean Coyle has stuck out 19 times in 45 at bats in his GCL rehab time

I may have been being overly dismissive of Teddy Stankiewicz. He's playing this whole year as a 21 year old in high-A, so I guess his numbers--particularly the putrid K/9--aren't as pedestrian as they appear to be superficially.

The Sox Brass don't need to worry about that until they get there.  Things change.

Worrying about where Benintendi fits into the MLB outfield while he sits in the NYPL seems a few steps to far away to worry about.  Heck, it's probably a few too many steps away to worry about where Margot fits and he's in AA.

It's not about fitting them into the same outfield, it's about the discount rate on the expected value of Benintendi and Margot relative to the shit sandwich of a pitching staff they're going to have in 2016 without major moves.  To me, Bradley's resurgence and Benintendi's emergence make it almost imperative that Margot be the centerpiece of a deal for a starting pitcher or a straight up trade for a relief ace this offseason.

What?  That's absolutely not necessary.  There's many, many other ways to rebuild the roster at the MLB level without just raiding the farm system.  For example, they could pretty easily improve the team by trading Sandoval, a midtier prospect & cash for Shields, move Hanley to 3rd, and play JBJ/Betts/Castillo.  That would shore up the defense, the pitching staff, and give up nothing long-term in one simple move without adding payroll.  Then sign a FA frontline pitcher of your choice and you've got a rotation of:

#1 - FA TBD
#2 - Shields
#3 - EdRod
#4 - Miley
#5 - Buchholz, or Owens/Wright/Johnson
