Does Philly fall to 6 seed now? Very rough season for them considering the expectations.

I mean, wasn't there talk that Embiid would be better without Simmons?
Not really, it's that the two of them together aren't going to reach their full potential. Replace Simmons with a different top 20 guy, or Embiid with a different top 10 guy, and the Sixers are probably better. Simply removing one or the other moves them from [theoretically] the top of the 2nd tier of contenders down to a team whose ceiling is a second round exit.

We could you know, measure a piece of string....not sure I get it. Maybe I’m not supposed to?

Was that supposed to be his Jimy Williams "frog bumps his booty" folksy quote? At least make it interesting, Brett.

Embiid with a season high 42, still a couple minutes to go in the 4th.

Hawks’ defense is laughable but the 76ers look oddly (for them) cohesive tonight. Although they did manage to blow a 17-point lead after 12 minutes.
The prior Embiid injury and the current Simmons injury is giving Philly a little experiment in decoupling the two. Wonder what Brand is thinking.

So typical. Embiid stays in blowout to the end in order to get a career-high, which he did with a 3-pointer. 49 points. Big smile. Playing to the crowd. Ladies and gents, your Philadelphia 76ers. Roughing up a bad team.

This is interesting. Ben dominates the ball so much on offense. So when he is out, and that has rarely happened so far in his career, we do get to see better ball distribution. 76ers obviously miss Ben’s defense and rebounding but the offense goes through more people when Josh Richardson or Shake Milton are distributing the ball.

Just three games so far without Simmons. As you say, Elton Brand is watching.

Subplot here is Brett Brown has known Ben since he was coaching his father Down Under. If Philly decides to part with Ben, Brown will be gone, too.

Wasn't addressing you so much as saying I won't be impressed until Philly wins some on the road. Sorry for the confusion.
Nobody will be impressed until then. Welcome to the club! It’s frustrating rooting for a team that talks too much with very little to back it up.

My guess: Simmons will be out at least a month, maybe for rest of season.

As we saw against Atlanta, this opens the door for Al Horford, and Shake Milton.

From the AP story on Simmons’s injury:

Being without Simmons also has created an opportunity for Al Horford to find a level of comfort within Philadelphia's system that, to this point, has been missing since he signed a four-year, $100 million deal to join the Sixers as a free agent last summer.

Horford had been benched for the three games prior to Monday's against Atlanta. But with Simmons out, Horford is the team's best remaining passer, and thus Brown slid him back into the starting five.

He played alongside Shake Milton, the second-year guard who got the first start at the point with Simmons out and finished with 7 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists in 26 minutes, and was tied for a team-high plus-21 against Atlanta.

"I thought it went well," said Horford, who had 7 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists in 31 minutes. "I thought we moved the ball, played with a little more pop. It was good."

Early in game, Horford missed a layup on a solo fast break. Hardly blinked as he headed up court.

I watched the end of that game. I honestly just felt bad for him and Harris watching them. They're just not that good.

Harris needs a lot of help around him. Losing the Big Two exposes him as a very ordinary forward, similar to the guy who bounced around the league for years. Horford was once a good player in the league but those days are gone.

Not sure where this is all heading. Maybe a big offseason trade involving one of Embiid or Simmons. Philly is stuck with the other two.

See how interested Washington would be in a Embiid and Beal flip this summer. I'd build the team around Simmons.
Bingo. I’d imagine you’d have to include more with Embiid but I’m fine with that if it lands Beal. If you can’t get him then you move Embiid for as much as you can while his value is high.

Ben Simmons for Wiggins + LaMelo Ball + Wolves pick for seems pretty fair. :)

The Horford contract makes things tough.

Not to go full sports talk radio here, but the fact that Ben Simmons NEVER shoots outside of ten feet is a serious institutional problem. It is completely bizarre that everyone seems to agree that the team will be better if Simmons expanded his range, but there has been zero development in that department over the past few years. How is that possible? I'm not saying that Simmons needs to be James Harden taking 12 threes a game, but the fact that he has taken six threes this season is indefensible. And it isn't just three pointers, 94 percent of his FGA come from inside ten feet. I think He should take 2-3 elbow jumpers a game just to keep defenses honest, even if he makes a low percentage of them. The fact that Brown/Philly management hasn't been able to get that out of Simmons is a serious flaw in the organization.

Yes, I understand that Simmons is still a very good player, even with this significant flaw. However, his offensive development has clearly been stunted due to his inability to even consider shooting outside of the restricted area. His numbers, while still very good, are basically the same as his rookie season. He has become a better defender but on offense, he is the same player as he was during his rookie year. Until he starts shooting a little bit more, I think we have a reasonable enough amount of evidence to show that he isn't going to improve that much on offense. Plus, his lack of shooting will become a bigger problem in the playoffs when defenses become more sophisticated at taking away his strengths on offense.

Ben will probably shoot more after he is traded, or after his obstinance gets Brown fired. Not shooting is on the coach and indicative of how almost the entire team is ignoring him.
I would fire Brand first, hire a new GM with actual experience. Start over, cash in the chips. Weigh offers for both big guys. Trade one far away, west coast.
The instability of this franchise starts with the owner, Josh Harris, who bought the team in 2011 and has run through three GMs so far. Compare that to Boston’s stability. The 76ers have been managed like a stock commodity, not a basketball franchise. The players are toys for the ownership group to pal around with in Miami.
Josh Harris is pleased because the team has played to full capacity at home for nearly three seasons. He is making money. Probably all that matters.

If we’re throwing Philly trade partners out there (for either Simmons or Embiid), would Chicago be a good fit? Either a deal centered around Lavine, or perhaps trading their other young pieces (Markkenan, Coby White, Wendell Carter) and a boatload of picks so they could pair one of Simmons/Embiid with Lavine? That’s a franchise that could use a big move to get back to relevancy.

That’s interesting, too. Do Simmons and Embiid have any say in where they end up? Chicago is too cold for either of them.

That’s actually pretty interesting. If you did a package around LaVine, Carter and picks or other players, Philly could replenish the coffers and still build around Simmons. Would need to think of exact specifics.

New Orleans for Embiid could be interesting too, but I don’t know how they feel about spacing with Zion. Ingram in Philly works well imo.

A Beal deal makes the most sense basketball-wise imo and might help Harris and Horford to look better.

Send Simmons back to Louisiana in a deal that brings Lonzo to Philly. They tried Fultz, now they can try Lonzo.

Brett Brown said earlier that he wanted Simmons to take at least one 3P a game whether or not he missed it.

Simmons ignored him.

That's kind of the problem.

That is my point exactly. The fact that Simmons can't seem to screw up the courage to accomplish that easy task suggests that there is a significant psychological issue with his refusal to shoot, and Brown has not exerted enough control over the situation to rectify it.

Terry, you want warm weather, how about Hot-lanta in the Summer for Joel?

Hawks get: Embiid/Harris
Sixers get: Collins/Huerter/Capela/Hunter

Maybe some future picks to spruce it up

Hawks have room to take on salary this summer. This team would be built around Joel/Trae, Harris 3rd banana. Hawks become an instant playoff team. Cam and 2020 draft pick gives them some young players to dream on besides Trae

Sixers get a salary reset (while unloading Harris contract) with a collection of good young players. Team would be young/deep, built around Simmons/Collins w/some 3pt shooters in Huerter/Korkmaz and some defenders in JRich/Hunter.

wonder is something like Simmons or Embiid for Lillard would work. That would be a go for it now move, though. Also, usually star players aren't moved for other star players. The Chicago deal seems like the most likely scenario. The 76ers are in a weird spot because they aren't "rebuilding" and that's normally the case when a star player is traded.
