I guess you could hope the ultimate NBA alpha could keep him in line?

That is of course crazy.

Maybe Howard is the only available C that Pelinka had heard of post-Cousins injury?

Howard might be useful to the Lakers in a limited role — say, 15 minutes per night, with a lot of those coming when neither LBJ nor AD is on the floor.

Whether he’d be willing to take such a limited role is an open question. You’d think that Pelinka would have an open conversation with Howard about that now, but Lakers’ management hasn’t always been adept at the care and feeding of people, so maybe not.

From the fans' perspective, this is like the Red Sox announcing that they are bringing back Carl Crawford.

It's like the front office is making a genuine effort to infuriate their season ticket holders.

I think Noah would be a better option for the Lakers, but I don't really care one way or the other.

How about Shaq? What’s he doing right now?
Them bringing back Rondo this year is entertaining enough, after making him persona non grata for sitting too far away.

Dwight is a no brainer too.

If they being back Shaq, they should drag Chuck out of retirement too. Having both would spice up the huddles materially.

Jesus, is there a more Lakers fit than Gortat? The moving picks that dude sets would shatter the brains of all Lakers haters.

Uh.... Isn’t Dwight on the Memphis Grizzlies roster? Isn’t working out a player on another team kinda...tampering? Just asking.
Memphis has granted the Lakers permission to workout a deal with the player. They are going to buy him out anyway so allowing Howard to find a landing spot is natural here.

Gortat is still, after years in the NBA, bufuddled when asked to defend the pick and roll. Slow as Kanter on rotations. I think the Lakers will need good defense from the 5.

Of course I’m rooting for Howard to sign so we can enjoy Rondo, LeBron, and Howard taking veiled swipes at each other through the press.

Has any player under LeBron’s leadership ever taken swipes at him or his teammates?

“When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ So he got up and went to his father.

“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

“The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

“But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.”

not laker specific, but it's amazing how fast and hard dwight howard's career has fallen from a few years ago when some people wanted the Cs to sign him over horford because REBOUNDS and he's now on his 5th team since then (if you count the grizz)

Love how that article makes it seem like other teams wanted Dwight Howard.

Not sure if this was covered above, but Howard’s contract is non-guaranteed until January 7. Also, this article mentions in passing that AD doesn’t want to play the 5, which explains why the Lakers felt some urgency to secure a warm body to fill the minutes that were initially slated for Boogie.

So when the Lakers and Sixers play, will Davis and Horford be happy if they're matched up at the 4, but unhappy if they're at the 5?

It’s a curious concern they both have. I understand wanting to avoid the wear-and-tear of defending bigger players in the post, but how many teams post up their bigs these days, and how many of those teams would choose to run a big in the post against a player of Horford’s or AD’s caliber, as opposed to doing so to exploit a mismatch?

This is going to be a curious development. I think most basketball minds agree that the Lakers will be at their best with Davis at the 5 and LeBron at the 4. However, the problem is that neither feels comfortable at those positions and would prefer to play as the 3/4 with a more traditional 5 on the court. I think that eventually, LeBron and Davis will have to play the 4/5 to win a playoff series, and they will have to accept that, instead of having Dwight Howard, or JaVale McGee soaking up a ton of minutes. However, both players wield an unusual amount of power within the organization, so it will be interesting to see how they come to accept those roles.

I remember Windhorst saying something interesting after LeBron left Miami for Cleveland. Windy said that one of the reasons was that LeBron didn't like playing power forward and while everyone lauded him for having the strength and athleticism to guard bigger players, he didn't really like banging down low with the David West's of the world. In Miami, he hadn't won any championships and needed to allow himself to be coached into optimizing his potential. But after he left Miami, one of the reasons he wanted to leave was that he felt like he already had won enough and didn't want to be in that environment anymore and wanted greater control over how he was going to play.

It's in interesting development in the shift towards centers becoming extinct that it's apparently being largely driven by centers.

I know you meant this as a joke, but the answer is yes.

I don't know why this is still surprising to people that big guys with perimeter skills might prefer to spend more time on the perimeter, and not being the guy who is down low more often on offense, and more importantly being the primary rim protector and rebounder on defense. If I had the choice of having 200+ pound guys racing at me full speed going to the basket, and also trying to go over/around/through me to get an offensive rebound, or not having to do that as much, I'd probably prefer to do less of that if it were a possibility.

If that is true...yikes. Judging solely on how casual she was in responding to that, I'm going to assume that isn't the first threat he has made.

Like most of you, I'm a Laker Hater from way back... BUT It's mildly entertaining watching those Silicon Nerds go silent in their shiny new building as AD slams alley-oops at will.
