Perhaps the most pivotal game between the Rays and Yankees this year. If the Rays lose 3 of 4 in this series, there’s a good chance that they kiss their division hopes goodbye. They need this game and have their struggling ace going.

On the other hand, a win in this game puts the Yankees at an unbelievable 11 games up in the loss column and 12 or better against the Sox. We will need this cushion for when the sleeping bears wake up again.

TB sent McKay down because he's not going to pitch again for a bit anyway and brought up another reliever, Ian Gibaut. I don't think NY made a pitching move (Boone wasn't sure after the game whether they would or not) because they would have to DFA Cessa (Cashman seems to want to hold him until the end of the month to get more in exchange for him) or they could option German a la McKay (German pitched on the 3rd so could come back as soon as the 14th, the 3rd game after the break).

Also FWIW, Boone said after the game that they were trying not to use Kahnle/Ottavino/Britton, but they were always planning to go to Chapman if needed and they did have Green for an inning if needed. Today they should have everyone but Chapman and Hale and Cortes Jr., I guess.

Who’s the long reliever if CC spits the bit?
Cessa!

They could make the German move, but I'm not sure who they'd bring up, Tarpley is too soon, Adams pitched last night, Harvey threw 16 pitches last night, Acevedo threw 45 pitches Thursday and has been bad in AAA, Holder has given up runs in all three AAA appearances, Heller is probably not quite ready yet (four rehab outings).

Nothing wrong with Cessa today. He has been great in his last two outings against two tough opponents and one of them being in London.
You are missing the most recent outing in which he could not finish the Thursday Tampa game with a six run lead and Hale had to bail him out.

I'm going to guess Heller for German, he needs a 40 man spot coming off the 60 day DL but they have an open one after releasing Morales last week.

I bet Heller, too. He looked sharp in Pawtucket earlier this week, from what I heard.

Seems like the Scranton shuttle has never been more productive. Boston had the same success last year with its minor league shuttle. It is not always this way.

I know Heller personally. Great kid. Wish him nothing but the best. Too bad he pitches for the Yankees.

Wow, did not see that coming, but Camarena was scheduled to start today, has pitched very well his last two games, and does have options so won’t be lost if Cashman wants to keep him. There is still a reliever purge coming soon but I guess not quite yet.

Gleyber and Romine the only bench players today (and presumably tomorrow), NY going with 14 pitchers.

Snell using mostly high FBs so far, Encarnacion almost got him but not quite.

Sucks to squander that, but they really made Snell work during that inning, should get their vulnerable bullpen up an inning earlier or so.

Innings 3-5, 22 pitches for CC, jeez. Wish I could have this as part of a larger start context, but no Yankee has ever been that efficient in a total pitching appearance in franchise history.

Sorry, what? Are you saying no Yankees pitcher has ever had 3 innigns with only 22 pitches?

They’re going to bring up McKay to start as the 26th man in their doubleheader against BAL next Saturday. Apparently you can be a 26th man in a doubleheader with no impact on the 10 day clock. So they can get the roster spot and he won’t miss any starts.

7ip 3er, I'll take that from CC. He might only have a couple more of those left in him.

Easy to second guess, but you know what? CC looked pretty good. Lowe isn't that good (the other one is though). He just caught one. It happens.
