Giving up runs is a bad thing to do.The bullpen guys are just taking turns now blowing it. They get three good innings from Taylor, Brasier, and Barnes, have the lead, and Workman blows it in the 8th. Goodness.
So when I argue that blown saves, even though it's a bad stat, are still really bad things for bullpens to do, is anyone really going to make the contrary case?
When you're up 8-1, giving up three runs in the 9th is basically harmless (except for the extra pitches the guys need to throw). When you're up 3-1 and give up three runs in the 9th, it'll likely cost you the game.Giving up runs is a bad thing to do.
The statistical packaging is just distraction.
