I wonder if Edwin Escobar will make his PawSox debut, as he last worked on July 21.

Ranaudo's had 4 days rest (last start 7/25), so he could take the ball as well.

I assume Chris Hernandez will come off the Temporarily Inactive List to fill Workman's roster spot, but he started 7/26 and is likely not an option to start on 3 days rest.

The PawSox twitter account listed Escobar for Thursday, but, of course, that was before Workman was noted to start in Boston.

Yikes. 5 runs off Simon Mercedes in the t-2nd on 4 H & 3 BB, and he retires just 4 batters before yielding to William Cuevas.

Walk-Double-Double-F8-Walk-Single-Single.

Jantzen Witte singled in Carlos Asuaje after his double in the b-1st, but the lead sure didn't last long.

5-1 Carolina, t-3rd.

For those scoring at home, Simon's 3 starts for Salem since returning from the DL look like this:

11.1 IP, 13 ER, 19 H, 5 BB, 12 K (none today) vs 59 batters. That's a .407 OBP and a 10.32 ERA.

It's officially a disaster in Virginia. Cuevas allows 4 more in the 3rd on 2 H, 3 BB and a WP.

9-1 Carolina heading to the 4th.

Hernandez will indeed pitch on three days rest for the PawSox. The pen is still 8-deep so I'd expect a start-by-committee.

A leadoff walk, SB and RBI single put Reading up 1-0 in the t-1st. But those are the only baserunners so far off Brian Johnson, who's through 5 innings on 61 pitches (41 strikes) and has recorded 14 straight outs.

Johnson also just qualified for the Eastern League ERA title, and even with the run today he's currently atop the list at 2.12.

Unfortunately Reading's run is all the scoring so far. The Sea Dogs have 3 H & 4 BB off Adam Freakin' Loewen, but have left the bases loaded in the b-1st, lined into an inning-ending DP with two on in the b-2nd, and gotten picked off at 2B to end the 4th.

One other note: Blake Swihart singled to extend his hitting streak to 11 games, over which he's batting .425.

1-0 Phillies, t-6th.

With GCL taking a 10-0 lead in the 3rd inning of Game 2, you'd think their bats had exploded. But they've only got 4 hits. The O's have walked 8 batters and hit another (Devers, with the bases loaded to force in a run) while committing 3 errors. Devers also has a 2-run double.

Jose Almonte with 4 scoreless innings (1 H, 0 BB, 3 K). Sox now batting in the t-5th.

Johnson's done after a leadoff walk & sac bunt in the t-8th. He tosses a career-high 7.1 IP today with 1 ER on 1 H, 3 BB & 4 K.

Noe Ramirez finishes off the 8th with no further damage, and Portland still trails 1-0.

EDIT - ARRRRRRGH!!!! And now Almanzar singles to lead off the b-8th, but gets thrown out trying to stretch it to a double.

Right after that baserunning out, Portland rallies to take the lead in the b-8th!

David Chester singled and was forced at 2nd by Stefan Welch. Jonathan Roof singled to prompt a pitching change with 1st & 2nd, and Heiker Meneses doubled them both in.

yes he has--as has Noe Ramirez, who finished the game today -- not saying they are comparable, just both excellent in very different roles.  Exciting to see how well Johnson has been doing.

Javier Guerra looks like a very a impressive SS prospect right now.  It wouldn't surprise me if he ends up sticking at that position over Chavis and Tzu Lin as he moves up the system (Chavis moving to another position).

Good to see Almanzar back with the organization.  He's having a very good year and his OBP is way up.  At only 23, he might end up in the mix of potential Red Sox first basemen over the next few years.

As Apisith mentions, Johnson really rocking it - now only 2 hits in last 14 plus innings!

Three scoreless innings for Verdugo, and he's unscored upon in 8 IP since his trade from KCR.

Alex Wilson on for the t-7th, still a 2-2 tie.

Just 3 hits for the PawSox, two of them solo HRs by Mookie & Cecchini, who apparently launched an epic blast to deep RF).

* Souza steals 2nd
* Moore - Walk (ruh roh...)

ha!  well, he and Verdugo are interesting.  perhaps we get a chance to see one or both of them at the MLB level this year.

edit:  I should say Hembree is more intriguing, but perhaps Verdugo is worth a look too.

STORIES

PAWSOX

Game Story

Alex Hassan's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning snapped a 2-2 tie after Mookie Betts and Garin Cecchini hit solo home runs early and the Pawtucket Red Sox defeated the Syracuse Chiefs, 3-2, Wednesday night at McCoy Stadium in front of 7,517 fans in the opener of a three-game series.

The victory moved Pawtucket (62-50) to within one game in the standings of North Division-leading Syracuse (62-48). The PawSox have now won 12 of their last 14 games while the Chiefs have dropped nine of 12.

Will Middlebrooks, playing in the 11th game of his most recent injury rehab stint, played the entire game at third base and went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. Middlebrooks, on the Boston DL since May 16th, is now 11-for-44 (.250) with three homers over his last 11 games played.

After Pawtucket starter Chris Hernandez allowed two runs in his three innings pitched, three relievers combined to shutout Syracuse over the final six innings. Ryan Verdugo (3.0 innings, two hits), Alex Wilson (2.0 innings, one hit) and Heath Hembree (1.0 innings, one hit) stymied the Chiefs in the fourth through the ninth.

Betts (4) and Cecchini (5) homered in the first and second innings respectively against Syracuse starter A.J. Cole. Cole lasted five total frames and worked through three hits and three walks to keep the game tied at 2.

The PawSox plated the go-ahead run in the eighth against reliever Ryan Mattheus (1-3) when Ryan Roberts led off with a single and moved to third two batters later on a single by Travis Shaw. Hassan then lifted the game-winning sac fly to center to score Roberts easily.
SEADOGS

Game Story

The Portland Sea Dogs (71-41) were stymied all afternoon, but plated a pair in the eighth and took down the Reading Fightin Phils (45-64) 2-1, in front of a sellout crowd of 7,368, Wednesday afternoon at Hadlock Field. The win gives Portland the series, 3-1, and ups the season series to 13-5 in their favor.

Portland trailed 1-0 all afternoon, but turned it around in the eighth inning against the Reading bullpen.

David Chester singled with one out, but was erased on a fielder's choice hit into by Stefan Welch off of the lefty Austin Wright (2-1). Jonathan Roof was next and singled through the hole on the left side, against the southpaw, and put two on with two out for Heiker Meneses.

Dusty Wathan dipped into the pen one more time and called upon Colton Murray to end the threat.

Meneses came in to Wednesday's game hitting .185, but had reached two of three times on the day before stepping in, in the eighth. The shortstop ripped a line drive into the left field corner for a double, on which Welch and Roof both scored and gave Portland the 2-1 lead.

Noe Ramirez took the mound in the ninth and retired the side in order, picking up his second win on the year.

Brian Johnson climbed the hill for Portland in his 16th start and was tagged for a run in the first by the Fightins. The southpaw walked the leadoff man, Albert Cartwright, who then stole second and scored on Kelly Dugan's RBI single two batters later.

From there, Johnson put it in cruise control and retired the next 13 men in a row. Edgar Duran broke up the stretch with a walk in the sixth, but the lefty went through the next six hitters with no issue.
SALEM

Game Story

The Carolina Mudcats used five run second and third innings to break open Wednesday's afternoon affair in a 13-6 win over the Salem Red Sox at LewisGale Field. The Cats jumped all over Simon Mercedes early and rolled to a second straight victory. Cole Susler was solid for Carolina in the victory, throwing six and a third innings. Sulser allowed three runs on five hits, posting two walks and three strikeouts. Mercedes was saddled with the loss, surrendering five runs on four hits and three walks in just an inning and a third.

Salem actually led this game 1-0 after one. Carlos Asuaje led off the frame with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Mike Miller, and scored on an RBI single by Jantzen Witte. Carolina would answer with 11 runs in a row before the Sox would score again in the fourth.

Carolina immediately answered Salem's run in the top of the second. Mercedes walked Jeremy Lucas and surrendered back to back doubles to Alex Monsalve and Jerrud Sabourin, giving the Cats a 2-1 lead. After picking up the first out of the inning and walking Logan Vick, Todd Hankins singled in Sabourin to push the lead to 3-1. After another RBI single by Yhoxian Medina, Mercedes was relieved by William Cuevas. Cuevas surrendered a sacrifice fly to Joe Sever, eventually retiring the side with the Mudcats up 5-1.

The turning point in this game came in the bottom of the second, with the deficit still manageable at 5-1. Sulser walked Kevin Heller and Jordan Weems to put two on with just one out. Matty Johnson hit a scorching liner, but hit right at Medina who snagged the liner and stepped on second for an inning ending double play.

The Mudcats then sent all nine to the plate again in the third to break it open. Lucas again walked to lead off the frame, followed by a one out walk to Sabourin and single by Roberts loaded the bases. Cuevas walked Vick to bring in the Mudcats sixth run. A batter later, Hankins hit a grounder to short, which Miller fielded and threw wide of second, scoring two runs on the error. A sacrifice fly by Medina made it 9-1 and Joe Sever single in his second run of the game, giving the Mudcats a commanding 10-1 lead after three. Cuevas finished with six runs allowed (four earned) in two and a third innings of work.
SPINNERS

Game Story

Carlos Pinales had been a perfect 10-for-10 in save opportunities entering Wednesday night, but the right-hander was charged with three runs in the eighth inning as the Staten Island Yankees rallied to start the Lowell Spinners road-trip in devastating fashion with a 5-4 loss at Richmond County Ballpark.

Lowell (19-27) jumped out to an early lead against Ty Hensley, the Yankees first round pick in 2012. After Joseph Monge was hit by a pitch with one out, he stole second and came around to score on Sam Travis's RBI single. After a Jordan Betts walk and Mike Meyeres fly out, Mauricio Dubon singled down the right-field line, scoring Travis to give the Spinners a 2-0 lead.

Staten Island (23-23) cut the lead in half in the fourth inning, taking advantage of a lead-off walk by Daniel Lopez. Lopez promptly stole second and came around to score on a two-out single by Ty McFarland, bringing the Yankees within a run.

The score would remain there until the sixth inning when the Spinners expanded their lead. Meyers led off the inning with an infield single, coming around to score on a two-out double by Cisco Tellez. After Deiner Lopez laid down a perfect bunt single, Connor Mullee threw away the play at first base allowing Tellez to score to expand the Spinners lead to 4-1.

The Yankees came storming back in the eighth to take the lead. After two scoreless innings, Oscar Perez ran into trouble to start the ninth. Lopez led off the inning, reaching on a Dubon fielding error. After an out, Luis Torrens doubled home Lopez and Pinales came out of the bullpen to try and hold the lead. McFarland greeted him with a single to move Torrens to third and Isaias Tejeda doubled to left, scoring Torrens to pull the Yankees within a run. After an intentional walk, Victor Conde singled through the hole, scoring McFarland to tie the game and a Renzo Martini sacrifice fly gave the Yankees a 5-4 lead.

The Spinners went in order in the ninth as the Yankees held on for the come-from-behind win.
