Cortes Jr's recent outings, most recent first:

BOS 3.1 1 1 1 0 3, then he lost it.
TOR 4 1 0 0 0 5, then Boone tried to get a 5th inning out of him and he gave up two runs.
HOU 2.2 1 0 0 1 1, then he started getting hit.

The point is that for 2-3 innings, he has been fantastic, and that can be his role now that NY has a full rotation again.

This is probably putting too fine a point on things, but German's average exit velocity tonight was almost exactly 84 mph. That's where the Expected Runs Added for balls hit with between a 22 and 28 degrees launch angle is at its absolute lowest: something like negative 0.2.

Side point, perhaps overly optimistic: but if German is back to pre-injury form, Severino follows, and the Yankees pick up someone like Stroman or Greinke, who gets bumped from the playoff rotation? Paxton? That seems crazy. But Tanaka, despite occasional appearances, is having a 1.9 bWAR year so far and is a post-season bulldog.
We're months away from having to worry about that, German might still have innings limits and end up as the long guy in the pen.

Whoa, Baltimore just scored 6 in the top of the 9th of a 3-3 game in Tampa.

What did O'Neill just say that Cone used to yell at opposing pitchers? Sounded something like, "You're catching your heel!" Anyone catch that?

Gio is better than any player I've ever seen at throwing balls when on his butt...and it's not even close. It's like he actually practices this.

This infield is spectacular. Torres’s range, Gio’s reflexes and arm, Didi’s athleticism and cannon. Best Yankee infield I can remember. Gio is a lot like Clete Boyer. I use a reference from 1961 to confirm how old I am.

Awesome job by Chad, NY has 5 bullpen studs now and still waiting for Betances to make it 6.

Vintage Chad Green, too, saving the pen. Yanks want to use him every three days for a while to preserve the arm, maybe for two innings, like tonight.

The Orioles can't put away the Rays, TB has scored three in the bottom of the 9th to cut it to 9-6 and have two guys on, pitching change.

Whew, Armstrong comes in and gets Pham looking on a 3-2 fastball, so TB and BOS both lose.

I like the way we managed the pitching tonight. Grooving into the all-star break is the way to go instead of burning everyone out thinking 3 days off cures fatigue.

Cortes Jr is kind of awesome mixing pitches now that he has some confidence that he can succeed at this level. He doesn't have the same stuff, but he has an El Duque/Cone-like ability to improvise new pitches and motions.

Getting Green back into the bullpen really helps.

Happy to be done with the Mets, they are hilarious but dangerous.

i respect Tampa a lot but we have to put to pedal to medal and try to win 104-106 games anything less than 100 wins means the 3 seed houton should win 103 or so and minn is a lock for 98 +

Urshela had a cramp in his glute, the trainers worked it out before the next inning and he felt good enough to stay in (obviously).

MIN is showing signs of weakness, 13-13 since their 40-18 start and down again in the 7th tonight. CLE has gained 5 games on them in that time, going 18-8, that division is not over yet.
