7/3 - Their entire team sucks

When I was a kid, I thought "My Entire Team Sucks" was the funniest damn joke I've ever heard in my life. When you face the Red Sox, the games are important and there's a buzz, but if we're honest it's less about rivalry and more about the division nowadays. When it comes to the Mets, I have to take the subway and eat next to these people. Yes, I mean "these people." They're a terrible group of fans who have no interest in baseball other than Yankees losses. The overused Mad Men quote is apt, "I don't think about you at all" is how I feel about the Mets. I don't give a flying squirrel if they are winning or losing. Yet there they are, all the time, like gnats.

But during these series? Losses are more painful than losses to the Sox. It brings me great joy to watch the bozo fans who every April declare a World Series win and during every Yankees losing streak declare how much better everyone is than Aaron Judge.

So...come on Domingo. Shut them down. And come on DJ, no more of whatever yesterday was. We got this!!!

Maybe give Encarnacion the day off, he has bad career numbers against Vargas anyway, and start the A defensive infield.

At least the Yankees scouts don't have to go far this series. Vargas is actually having a good year. He has a nice little streak going where he hasn't allowed more than 3er in 11 starts.

Yep, EE sits:

LeMahieu (1B)
Judge (RF)
Sánchez (C)
Hicks (CF)
Torres (2B)
Gregorius (SS)
Urshela (3B)
Gardner (LF)
Germán (P)

Germán threw 65 pitches in his AAA start, so I'm guessing can go maybe 80-85 tonight. His velocity was down in that start but he seemed to say afterwards that was kind of intentional, worth keeping an eye on tonight.

With John Sterling already out as of this weekend, today Michael Kay announced he needs surgery on his vocal cords and will be out around a month. Pretty curious to see who YES brings in, they were talking about Buck Showalter and Willie Randolph a few weeks ago but they need a play by play guy (they already announced Ruocco would fill in for Sterling, but maybe that will change now).

I pretty much mute all announcers during games and unmute for reviews or other curious stuff.

Announcers talk too much. And the ones like Kay who do talk shows and then games, what do they expect?

Cone is very good and worth listening to, Joe Girardi was amazing the one year he did Yankee games and is great currently on MLBN whenever he is on. Showalter might be great too, curious to hear him at least.

Echoes of yesterday’s game but we got this fellas. You know how I know? Because I’m eating dinner at a bar in Queens next to four idiot Mets fans who are saying the Mets shouldn’t be sellers

They should be but to be honest they're so so far behind the Braves in terms of young talent and they have enough current talent that the path forward is not so clear (and it wasn't over the winter either, although the Cano/Diaz deal looks hilariously disastrous currently).

Wow, that call on Gleyber was as bad as it gets.

And what is Callaway doing? His bullpen is loaded currently, he got three of his main guys back yesterday.

That was a rocket by Gio. Never saw a guy get hurt hitting a homer before. Must have strained his back on one of those twisting throws from foul territory.

Would be pretty cool if German was back to early season form.

Edit: Crosspost with Terry, great minds.

Kahnle, Ottavino and Britton might all be off limits tonight after pitching three times in four days.

Green in, that makes more sense.

I need to go look, but my impression is that Nestor has been great for the first 3 innings or so, Boone tries to push him and that’s where most of the damage has come.

This is probably putting too fine a point on things, but German's average exit velocity tonight was almost exactly 84 mph. That's where the Expected Runs Added for balls hit with between a 22 and 28 degrees launch angle is at its absolute lowest: something like negative 0.2.

Side point, perhaps overly optimistic: but if German is back to pre-injury form, Severino follows, and the Yankees pick up someone like Stroman or Greinke, who gets bumped from the playoff rotation? Paxton? That seems crazy. But Tanaka, despite occasional appearances, is having a 1.9 bWAR year so far and is a post-season bulldog.
