In an unprecedented move, the Yankees voted unanimously as a team to face Baltimore tonight and Thursday in a COVID 19-related schedule switch. Gerrit Cole and J.A. Happ will pitch the two games against the Orioles. The Yanks will then head home to face Boston over the weekend. Jon Abbey reports the three starters will be Paxton, Tanaka and Montgomery.
It’s good to be playing baseball again, and better to see the Yankee players so committed despite all the distractions these past two days.
Game time tonight is 7:35 p.m.

I am not positive of the order, but I think that's it. With three lefties in the rotation, NY needs to try to keep Cole and Tanaka separated to avoid throwing three straight lefties, I think, although they can always mix in some combo of Loaisiga/King/Green for openers or their own game if they want a different look.

Happ and Montgomery both looked great in both iterations of training camps, looking forward to seeing them both in (kind of) real games.

I would like to see Monty take a big step forward this year. He was good before the surgery.

I'll take any yankees baseball at this point. They could bring Javy Vazquez and Carl Pavano back to start and I'd soak it up.

Somewhere in a Jersey swamp...I don't think Jacoby ever intended to become a malingerer...he genuinely wanted to continue being a good baseball player...Pavano never gave a shit about baseball, just the perks of money, fame and sex.
The great thing about Pavano is that it was such a huge deal at the time and the Yankees were so excited to have him. Then him being a bust was a major story....but his contract was only $40/4yrs. That's like a dream scenario for teams gambling on a #2.

.632 SLG as a team against Baltimore is insane. That’s Lou Gehrig’s career number, third all time, if you make that into a player comparison.

Iglesias doubles over Judge’s head. Jose couldn’t hit the ball out of the infield in Pawtucket but he has turned into a solid big league hitter. Brett Gardner had the same kind of start as Iglesias and also turned into a hitter.

Judge has a couple of uncharacteristic defensive duds early on this season.

They need to put the game on tape delay so Michael Kay knows when to go into his home run call, because he has been terrible so far with those.

Yankees in 2019 had 12 games against the Orioles alone where they had 3+ home runs, or over 63% of their 19 games against Baltimore. For context, over their other 143 games they had 32 such games. Just over a third of the work in about one-eighth the game sample.

64 pitches for Cole through 4, he doesn’t look sharp but his B game is better than most guy’s A games.

Sanchez looks totally lost at the plate, Gardner too. Tauchman really needs to play more.

DJ a triple away from the cycle, I think he could have had that earlier but he didn't look like he was running full out on his double.

Judge out easily trying to stretch to a double, a very sloppy game for NY so far, nice that they are up 7-1 anyway.

That long on a punt relative to Judge’s air time would be absolutely absurd. Like, record hang time. Kay just involved my two favorite things, football special teams and Judge bombs in relation to Statcast. Like 5 seconds is considered basically barrier to entry in the NFL but 5.5 is an almost an all time, surely pro bowl year.

Cole just keeps getting stronger as this game goes on. 6 2/3 strong innings tonight. Retired 14 in a row before Nunez just doubled on his 100th pitch. And now a 2-run homer by Smith on pitch No. 101.

With all the carelessness in this game, this feels like it’s much closer than a four run lead. Fortunate to be facing Baltimore tonight, truly.

Weird energy this game. I do think that the crowds have an impact on some players. I just hope Cole isn't one of them.

Cole was set to pitch yesterday and got moved to today at the last minute, that can’t help. His B game is impressive, hopefully he has his A game next time out.
