The team is burnt out. They need a day off and everyone has been dragging ass for awhile. Though the Twins series awoken the offense, we were on the cusp of losing 3 straight before the crazy game and really didnt look great in the finale. The Twins series is a dim memory.
My take is the Red Sox had their backs against the wall coming in 11 games behind. The Sox started playing free and easy. Things began to snowball in a good way for Boston, whose offense is deeper than even the Yankees, thanks in no small part to the emergence of Devers as a star. The Yankees played into their hands with shitty pitching. The team is burnt out. They need a day off and everyone has been dragging ass for awhile. I feel like they could have done decidedly better than Girardi (didn't get along great with the front office, the players grew weary of his intensity, and the media didn't like that he got rightfully cranky sometimes at stupid questions in press conferences). Boone has none of those issues but also doesn't bring too much of his own to the table, but that's what NY wants. He was pretty bad managing the bullpen last year and the first month or two this year but has been a lot better since. What they probably could use is a much better pitching coach, but that's not happening until the offseason at least. You guys miss Girardi? Boone doesn't seem to manage a great bullpen particularly well.
Kahnle was next man up. That’s his spot. Boone was trying to steal a second inning from Green. Mistake. And then he compounded it by leaving Green in, probably to try and save his bullpen in an apparent loss. I think the bullpen arms are weary and Boone is reluctant to overuse them in this series and risk some damage. Everyone knows the 4-game series in NY next week is the important one. Boston got what it needed here but it’s only the first half of the challenge.2 run game in the 6th, turns into a high leverage situation. Britton and Ottavino rested. Instead stays with Green for 47 pitches en route to it becoming a 6 run game.
12 pitch AB against Eovaldi ending in a bullet single, but Coup is still mad he's not Johnny Bench Jr.Higashioka with a great AB, delivers 2-run single in 8th. 9-5.
I like him, too. He can hit a high fastball, a rare skill. The 12-pitch AB was very informative about his progress as a hitter. Most likely, he’s an AAAA player, but teams often need three catchers in a season.12 pitch AB against Eovaldi ending in a bullet single, but Coup is still mad he's not Johnny Bench Jr.
All I really said about him, for the record, was that there's a good chance he's better than Romine (Romine has no options so he is the normal backup) and it's nice to see him get a chance, since he's 29 already.
