Slider for strike, then a foul ball on 96. FB up and away. JD chases slider down and away. Two outs.

At least the bullpen has a chance to influence this game.

Green throwing a lot of sliders to Vazquez, who just pulled a hanger foul. Fly ball to right. 3 outs. Good job and good coaching to change Green’s usual approach.

They’re running on Higashioka with Sam Travis, no speed demon. High throw. Safe. It’s 6-3. NowTauchman fails to catch a Bradley fly to left. Hits his glove when he leaps. Bradley somehow gets to third and scores when Betts sends Hicks back to the CF wall. 8-3. Boston Massacre in reverse.

TB just blew a 9-3 lead to TOR in the final two innings, 9-9 to the 10th now.

Yeah, this is getting historic now. Shades of 1978. The defending champs are waking up. If they can do damage next week in NY, we have a Pennant Race again.

Not really watching, but you mean Higashioka? He homered in his other start this series.
They are using the MLB ball in AAA this year. Home runs up in AAA at a blistering, unprecedented rate. Everyone hits home runs with this ball.

The Twins series is a dim memory.
The team is burnt out. They need a day off and everyone has been dragging ass for awhile. Though the Twins series awoken the offense, we were on the cusp of losing 3 straight before the crazy game and really didnt look great in the finale.

My take is the Red Sox had their backs against the wall coming in 11 games behind. The Sox started playing free and easy. Things began to snowball in a good way for Boston, whose offense is deeper than even the Yankees, thanks in no small part to the emergence of Devers as a star. The Yankees played into their hands with shitty pitching.
Boston also seems fired up, playing at home, while New York seems dazed and lacking energy. Torres especially.
Basically, the Yankees let Boston back in the race. They could stop the bleeding with a win on Sunday night but that seems unlikely.

Oh. I thought you were talking about their top 5ish bullpen ERA.

I can't really draw much of a conclusion from one or two decisions in a single game.

I think Boone is fine. I did like Girardi a lot though.

You guys miss Girardi? Boone doesn't seem to manage a great bullpen particularly well.
I feel like they could have done decidedly better than Girardi (didn't get along great with the front office, the players grew weary of his intensity, and the media didn't like that he got rightfully cranky sometimes at stupid questions in press conferences). Boone has none of those issues but also doesn't bring too much of his own to the table, but that's what NY wants. He was pretty bad managing the bullpen last year and the first month or two this year but has been a lot better since. What they probably could use is a much better pitching coach, but that's not happening until the offseason at least.

2 run game in the 6th, turns into a high leverage situation. Britton and Ottavino rested. Instead stays with Green for 47 pitches en route to it becoming a 6 run game.
Kahnle was next man up. That’s his spot. Boone was trying to steal a second inning from Green. Mistake. And then he compounded it by leaving Green in, probably to try and save his bullpen in an apparent loss. I think the bullpen arms are weary and Boone is reluctant to overuse them in this series and risk some damage. Everyone knows the 4-game series in NY next week is the important one. Boston got what it needed here but it’s only the first half of the challenge.

Higashioka with a great AB, delivers 2-run single in 8th. 9-5.
12 pitch AB against Eovaldi ending in a bullet single, but Coup is still mad he's not Johnny Bench Jr.

All I really said about him, for the record, was that there's a good chance he's better than Romine (Romine has no options so he is the normal backup) and it's nice to see him get a chance, since he's 29 already.

It is strange to leave in Green for that many pitches but I wasn't really watching, I've been as checked out on this series as NY's pitching.

Same. It's been background noise as I just wait to see what happens at the deadline.

I like him, too. He can hit a high fastball, a rare skill. The 12-pitch AB was very informative about his progress as a hitter. Most likely, he’s an AAAA player, but teams often need three catchers in a season.

TB lost in 12, brutal loss for them, so Boston moves into second by 1/2 game.
