Seems the GCL Sox have been rained out yet again.

Oh, those wacky Red Sox first round picks and their knee-slapping, belly-rolling senses of humor...

Game 1 does, in fact, get played, and the Sox lose to the GCL Rays 8-3. The joker went 0-for-2 with 2 whiffs, a walk, and a run scored, and he's now hitting .056 (2-for-36) in the first 11 games of his career. Josh Ockimey didn't play (no word on whether he took his teammate's report as seriously as I did...)

Jake Cosart pitched a scoreless 1st inning (2 BB) in his pro debut, with Luis Ramos & Pat Goetze getting lit up for 4 runs apiece in relief.

Game 2 begins shortly, with Michael Kopech getting the start.

The wheels fell off for GCL in extras. K.J. Trader relieved Jalen Williams after a walk to lead off the b-10th. Trader got a grounder to 3B, but 2B Rafael Olivares dropped the ball on the force attempt. After a bunt and an intentional walk loaded the bases, Trader coaxed a shallow fly out. But then he walked in the winning run.

Coming to the minor league threads has been the only saving grace of this despicable season.

Light in the tunnel, no matter how bad it gets.

I wonder what Almanzar has to do to get a 40-man roster spot this offseason?

STORIES

SEADOGS

Game Story

The Portland Sea Dogs (66-38) scored first, but faltered in the finale of the season series, losing 4-2 at the hands of the Binghamton Mets (61-42) Wednesday night at Hadlock Field. The loss was the first in the three game series, and the season series settles at 12-9 in favor of the Sea Dogs.

The game got off to a loud start with each side tallying a homer in the first three innings. Sean Coyle put the 'Dogs on the board with a solo homer over the video board in left-center, off of Steven Matz, his 12th of the season.

Mike Augliera took the hill for Portland and delivered two scoreless before Rylan Sandoval connected on a solo homer to center and tied the game at 1-1. The blast was the first of the year for the third baseman and the 11th against the righty this season.

The homer was the beginning of the offense for Binghamton as they went on to take the lead, scoring three runs over the next two innings against Augliera (4-9).

T.J. Rivera led off the fourth with a double and scored on Jayce Boyd's single to center, making it 2-1 visitors. The Mets doubled their output with a pair in the fifth. Travis Taijeron drove home Dilson Herrera with an RBI double to left-center and Rivera drove home another with a sacrifice fly to center, putting Binghamton in front 4-1.

Matz (4-1) weaved in and out of trouble over the next three innings following the Coyle blast. After going in order in the third, the 'Dogs loaded the bases with one out in the fourth, against the southpaw. He battled back to strike out both David Chester and Michael Almanzar, ending the threat.

Portland cut it to 4-2 in the sixth on three singles. Ryan Lavarnway started the rally with a single to right and with one out, Michael Almanzar and Chester hit singles, the latter plating the lead runner and making it a two-run deficit.

Matz finished his outing with a perfect seventh. He allowed the two runs on seven hits, walked one and struck out four en route to his fourth victory of the season. Randy Fontanez pitched a scoreless eighth and Cody Satterwhite locked down his ninth save with a perfect ninth.
SALEM

Game Story

If a 10 run night Tuesday seemed good, a 12 run night was even better for the Salem Sox, who routed the Lynchburg Hillcats 12-3 at City Stadium Wednesday night. The Sox used a seven run fourth inning to blow the game open. Salem has outscored Lynchburg 22-3 in the first two games of the series.

Joe Gunkel continued Salem's starting pitching dominance of late, allowing just a run on seven hits in six innings of work. Gunkel walked just one and struck out seven Hillcats. Daniel Watts was roughed up in defeat, allowing ten hits and nine runs (seven earned) in three and two thirds.

Lynchburg actually took a 1-0 lead in this game on a leadoff home run by David Nick. The Hillcats managed a hit in every inning from the first through the seventh but did not score any runs, leaving seven on base. Down 12-1 in the eight, pinch hitter Daniel Carroll hit a long home run off Kyle Martin to make it a 12-2 game.

The Sox turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead in the second. Kevin Heller launched a two run homer off Watts to give the Sox a lead they would not relinquish.

The game stayed 2-1 until the fourth. Mario Martinez led off with a double and was bunted to third by Aneury Tavarez. Watts then hit Kevin Heller to put runners on the corners with no outs. Jordan Weems knocked a single to left field to score Martinez to make it 3-1. After a single by Matty Johnson loaded the bases, Mike Miller hit a ball that went under the glove of second baseman Levi Hyams, scoring two runs on the error to give the Sox a 5-1 edge. Still with one out, Reed Gragnani singled in Johnson and Jantzen Witte doubled in Miller and Gragnani to give the Sox an 8-1 lead. After a strikeout by Blair, Martinez doubled for the second time in the inning, scoring Witte and completing the seven run frame.

Salem extended its 9-1 lead in the fifth. Matty Johnson tripled off Mauricio Cabrera and scored on a wild pitch to put up a tenth run for a second straight night. In the sixth, after back to back two out walks by Carbera to Martinez and Tavarez, Kevin Heller drove in both runners with a double off new pitcher Nate Hyatt to give the Sox a 12-1 lead.
DRIVE

Game Story

Thanks to a late offensive outburst of eight runs in the final two innings, the Greenville Drive (8-25, 42-60) defeated the Lakewood BlueClaws (11-21, 38-63) 9-2 in Wednesday's series opener.

Trailing 2-1 in the top of the eighth, the Drive took the lead for good with a three-run inning. Hector Lorenzana struck out to begin the frame, but he took first when David Child's (0-1) pitch squirted away. Cole Sturgeon followed by doubling him to third, and Wendell Rijo's two-run triple to left made the score 3-2. A Lakewood error later in the frame added another run.

For good measure, the Drive scored five more times in the ninth against Matt Hockenberry. After Franklin Guzman's double, Jimmy Rider's walk, a double steal and Lorenzana's walk, back-to-back doubles by Sturgeon and Rijo each plated two runs. Manuel Margot added an RBI single with two outs to push the score to the eventual final.

Raynel Velette (5-2) earned the victory following three scoreless innings in relief of Daniel McGrath, who received a no-decision despite allowing just three hits and two runs in six innings while punching out six.

The Drive jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Kevin Mager smacked an opposite field homer to right, his fifth long ball of the season.

Lakewood took the lead in the sixth when McGrath issued a leadoff walk to Carlos Tocci, which was followed by an RBI triple by Andrew Pullin and an RBI double by Zach Green.

Rijo went 2-5 with four RBI to lead the Drive offense, while Guzman and Sturgeon collected two hits as well. Pullin had a pair of hits for Lakewood.
SPINNERS

Game Story

The Lowell Spinners jumped out to a 5-0 first inning lead, but the Vermont Lake Monsters battled back, held on through a one hour, one minute rain delay and handed the Spinners their second straight loss Wednesday night, 8-6.

Lowell (17-22) got the crowd into things early, jumping out to a quick five-run lead. After two quick outs to start the first, back-to-back singles by Sam Travis and Jordan Betts got the rally started. Mike Meyers followed with a triple, scoring both men, to give the Spinners the early lead. An infield single by Cisco Tellez plated Meyers and Mauricio Dubon followed with his third home run of the season to left-centerfield, extending the lead to 5-0.

Vermont (15-24) responded with a pair of runs in the top half of the second with Tuesday's hero, Seong-min Kim delivering a two-run double to cut the lead to three.

The Lake Monsters pulled within a run in the third inning, scoring a pair of runs with two-outs on an RBI double by John Nogowski and a run scoring single by Ben McQuown.

While the Spinners bats went quiet, Vermont took the lead in the fourth. After Kim was hit by a pitch to start the inning, a Yairo Munoz double scored Kim to tie the game and chase Spinners' starter Jake Drehoff. Chandler Shepherd came out of the bullpen, but could not strand the inherited runner, as Munoz scored on a Scott Masik single to give Vermont the lead.

After the Lake Monsters plated a run in the sixth against Ellis Jimenez, the Spinners cut the deficit back to one-run on a Dubon sacrifice fly. Jimenez was able to keep Vermont off the board in the top half of the seventh before the one hour, one minute rain delay halted play.

After the rains came to an end, the Spinners went quietly in the bottom half of the inning while Vermont tacked on an insurance run in the eighth against Carlos Pinales for what would hold as an 8-6 final at soggy LeLacheur Park.
