Aaron Boone had a bit of a 'moment' yesterday. We all saw it, and it was glorious. It will probably get over-hyped quickly enough, but I'm happy to enjoy it for a little bit. Genuine passion on the playing field, in any sport, is awesome.

Taking the mound will be two left-handers: Kyle Freeland and J.A. Happ. Both have had some ups and downs this season. I expect a slugfest, so buckle up for an intriguing pitcher's duel. It could happen.

The weather for this weekend is 97+. Hope they wear some SPF
Tonight should be tolerable but they should really consider moving one or both of the weekend games from 1 PM to 7 PM. 'Feels like 110'=yikes.

I talked a bit about how just from observation, after Boone's rant, the young ump seemed to get a lot better. Here is a bit of data to back that up from Kiley McDaniel's chat:

"The ESPN podcast says the calls Boone yelled about had 20 and 4 (!) percent chances of being called strikes, and then after the toss, not a single called strike was below 60%. It… worked?"

I definitely think its possible that a rant like that can force some additional focus, especially for a younger ump.

I was just about to make a post raging about sloppy defense, but Tauchman cut me off with that awesome throw.

Freeland gave up a soft single to DJ, walked Judge kind of intentionally, then walked Sanchez, who did not chase. And then EE made him pay.

Happ in trouble again after 2 Ks to start the inning, up to 74 pitches in the 4th.

well there is concern about... something ????
I think Sanchez saw him land strangely on his final warmup, but he seems as ok as he was before that.

Blackmon pops up on the first pitch to end it, he has the funniest home/road splits I have ever seen.

.415/.470/.848 at home, 1.318 OPS
.227/.261/.369 on the road, .630 OPS

Meanwhile, Clint Frazier has found religion in Scranton. He now understands his defense is holding him back. And supposedly he has fixed it with help from the coaches down there.

So the Yankees came to spring training hungry and established a mentality that defines them.
The Red Sox did this in 2018, led by Cora and JD Martinez and back to back first round exits. They rode it the entire season, hopefully NY can too.

He gets through it, that should be enough from him on this hot night.

Except for Tauchman, who made a sliding catch to open the fifth.
Not watching quite as closely so far, are they talking about how Tauchman also was a Rockie until this season, not just DJ and Ottavino? He's been a big part of this game so far.

If I am Arenado, I’m pissed that the Rockies let DJ and Ottavino go away.

When the Yanks acquired Tauchman, I recall you posting something about his outfielding skills. All true. What a great fit for this team. I kid about his bat but his OPS has climbed over .750. He hustles, throws people out, plays all three OF positions, which is invaluable. His defense keeps Clint in Scranton.

Edit: I mute the announcers, have no idea if they are tauting Tauchman as a former Rockie.

I said all offseason that one weakness Cashman needed to address if possible was a young OF with options who could play CF, I thought that's what he was going to get back for Sonny Gray. He wasn't able to do that, but sent yet another of his seemingly endless supply of MLB-ready relievers to COL for the blocked Tauchman, who has definitely helped NY at times including tonight.

Ottavino strikes out the side against his former teammates. Curious how NY plans to get through these last three innings, anyone they use except Chapman and Tarpley is out for tomorrow since everyone else pitched yesterday and NY doesn't let guys go three days in a row.

And immediately steals 2nd and takes 3rd on the bad throw. Yet again Yankee fans (not here) look like idiots across the board for mocking him being up over the defensively inept Clint.

Tauchman scores on a dribbler, that is three runs you can credit him for tonight, two for us plus the throw to home.
